Career Change
Today is my last week at work before I'm, once again, unemployed. So far there is no other job on the horizon. As my wife is about to give birth in May, I suppose I need to feed and clothe the new arrival. I hate the career that I currently work in. I need a change. Can anyone suggest a career which supplies a modest income (enough to feed, clothe, holiday my family), but which means I'm my own boss.

Help me, pleeeeease!

1. ski instructor
I know, that's my answer to everything, but it does work for a lot of family folks out here. :)

"I suppose I need to feed and clothe the new arrival"... :D

5. What are your qualifications?
Do you have specialized skills that are marketable in other areas?

Do you like working with people?

Are you a techie?

These and other questions are on my mind too as I search for a job with stable income.

7. My skills
I'm in training. i.e., I'm in bullshit. I have to bullshit all day, every day, and make myself look useful.

I like working with nice people, especially drop dead gorgeous women who laugh at my jokes and compliment me on my depth of sensitivity and understanding.

I have no technical skills, except the ability to log on to DU.

Does that help?

12. I've seen you in that thong.
I can understand the thong. But a thong tank top AND flip flops? Come on!

14. i pioneered the flip flop fashion craze
i agree wearing them with black dress socks was a little whacky but those socks clashed just right with the pink thong.

17. What interests you?
Can you take maybe two part time jobs, one in something you might like & the other to supplement? Or, if you have a favorite hobby or interest, can you see if there are any magazines or associations where you could work or contribute to? There's also www.philanthropy.com -- go to their jobs section and cruise through there for ideas.

If you've done training, maybe you could morph it into fundraising or something -- I know many nonprofits really need fundraisers.

Do you know how to do something in a unique way? The book market for "How To" books is huge.

There's also a pretty large market now for freelance personal assistants, I heard an NPR story where many personal assistants get approx. $30/hr, if they're good, though after that story (on a few weeks ago) there might now be a flood of people trying to do it (means you really do get to be your own boss, so long as you get the work done. Of course, then there is the hassle of taking care of all your own insurance needs, blah blaH blah).

a friend of mine lost her office job and bartended to fill the gap.. She never went back to office work.. There were nights that she made over $100 in tips.. and she only worked 3 or 4 nights a week..:)

Just a thought

20. Become a consultant.
:)

You get to be your own boss. You don't have to work with the same company for very long. You pretty much convince people to pay you to come in and tell them what their doing wrong and then leave.
