Really an excellent movie. Thought Russell Crowe should have gotten a nod, but he has won before so I imagine that is why.

Can't argue with LOTR though...definitely the best of the year.

27. Buzzz, Wrong! Try again soleft
Go back about 10-11 years from 1978.

Lee Marvin won the Best Actor Oscar in 1966 for his role as Kid Shelleen, whom Jane Fonda (Cat Ballou) hires to revenge the murder of her father.

Oh, in 1966 Lee Marvin Also won a Golden Globe BA, A Silver Bear BA from the Berlin Film Festival, and a BAFTA BA from the UK.

wouldn't that make Dreyfus the last one to win for a comedic role.

Because.....didn't 1977 come after 1966.

33. Yes, you are correct
however, I'm rather focused on Cat Ballou b/c I consider the Shelleen character a more direct antecedent to Capt. Jack rather than Richard Dreyfuss's character.

Sorry, I misunderstood you, soleft. I'm so happy Johnny is getting the recognition he deserves, I've got an itchy finger about it. LOL!

35. I still think Dustin Hoffman should have beaten Ben Kingsley
This year I'd have to lean toward Kingsley because he was utterly amazing in House of Sand and Fog. People never win in the years I think they should have won. I thought Sarandon should have won for Thelma and Louise, and I thought Paul Newman should have won for The Verdict.

was one of the best pictures of 2003 thanks largely to JD. The movie would have been good w/o him, but JD took it to a whole other planet. And we are certainly better for it! :D

There have been some suggestions to spruce up the rides with Jack Sparrow. We'll see.

I am so happy for Johnny Depp and Bill Murray. So surprised and pleased for Johnny.

And how happy am I to see neither Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow on this list--they are usually the darlings of these shows.

I don't think J. Lo will show up at the Oscars this year after the breakup.... I'm thinking I will very much enjoy the Academy Awards this year.

19. My disappointments:
Maria Bello was fabulous in "The Cooler" and should have gotten a Best Supporting Actress Nod (she got a Golden Globe Nom).

I still think Eugene Levy should have gotten a Best Supporting Actor nod for his role in "A Mighty Wind". And why didn't "A Mighty Wind" get a screenplay nod - that movie was funny as hell!!!

29. I'm pleased about quite a few of those nominations.
First of all, I'm extremely pleased for what appears to be at least some breadth in the nominations, with no reliance merely on commercial success or familiarity to American audiences.

Secondly, Sofia Coppola has managed a rare feat for a female working in Hollywood, helming a motion picture AND getting several nominations for it (for herself and her actors).

Thirdly, I was heartened by some of the choices in acting nominations (Johnny Depp, Patricia Clarkson).

May the best people win! (Okay, I know all the best people can't win. But let WORTHY people win, and it wouldn't hurt if they're gracious).

Oh, and color me THRILLED that Tom Cruise wasn't
nominated for a damn thing.

I am disappointed that Sean Astin didn't get a nod for his LoTR part. He was my favorite actor of the series, for performance. For looks well both Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom were hot, hot, hot..

I love Johnny Depp too, and I'm really rooting for him in that category. Go Alec Baldwin go. It will totally piss of the Reich wing to have Alec win, they hate him so. The Cooler was a great movie.

42. Yeah, seriously
The lack of Scarlett nominations was a clear oversight made by the studios that released LiT and GwPE. Focus didn't know whether to campaign for Scarlett in LiT as supporting or leading, and she subsequently probably had her vote split. Further, her vote was probably split by being in both LiT and GwPE.

It's clear though, that her oversight wasn't a 'fuck you' like it was to Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe.

52. I'm really surprised to see no nominations
for American Splendor, for writing or acting. Pretty much everyone who's seen it was blown away by Hope Davis and Paul Giamatti.

I'm overjoyed that Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for Whale Rider. There was talk of nominating her for supporting, which was nonsense; she carries that whole movie, and does an astonishing job for someone so young and with so little experience. I absolutely believed her as that character, every word and every motion. I doubt highly that she'll win, but I'm still delighted by the nomination.

I wish Return of the King, Seabiscuit, Master and Commander, and Mystic River weren't all the same year. All four are excellent movies, and all deserve recognition. Of the four, though, there's no question in my mind which is the most crowning achievement. Peter Jackson, clear another couple spaces on your mantel.

55. But "American Splendor" was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay
Check that list of nominations again!

But yes, it is surprising that Hope Davis didn't get a nod. When are will the Academy take notice of Davis, Lili Taylor, Campbell Scott and Steve Buscemi? At least Patricia Clarkson received a nomination this year, as Chris Cooper (another secret acting weapon) did last year. Cooper actually won, but this year Clarkson's up against Renee Zellweger, who may have the votes...

Oh, well. Stay tuned.

57. I'm pleasently suprised and disappointed
I am very happy that "A Mighty Wind"'s "Kiss" was nominated for best song, and it really should win: it's beautiful, touching, and IT'S ACTUALLY PLAYED DURING THE MOVIE, which I think should really be required for best song.

And as for what I'm disappointed about? I would liked to have seen Elijah Wood and Sean Astin nominated for best actor and supporting actor for LOTR:ROTK. Not that they would win, or would necisarily deserve to win, but I really believe their performances were worthy of recognition in a nomination, Astin especially.

59. I'm really disappointed that Sean Astin isn't in there
But, otherwise it was a good batch of nominations: Marcia Gay Harden, Jude Law, Johnny Depp, Diane Keaton, Annie Lennox, and of course Peter Jackson.
