Post a 'one hit wonder' song from the 60's
My definition is that, to be classified as a hit, the song had to have reached the Billboard top 100 for that year.

My pick? Winchester Cathedral, by the New Vaudeville Band, from 1966.

(but I'm not actually sure they had a "hit")

14. On the album chart they actually had a few successes
although In-a-Gadda-da-Vida was the biggest seller so far. As for singles, an edited version of "In-a-Gadda..." charted in the thirties on the singles chart and they had a handful of other singles that barely charted, including "Soul Experience", "In the Time of Our Lives", and "Easy Rider (Let the Wind Pay the Way)."

great tune, too. Visage did a very cool cover of it in the early 80s.

It was also the same week as Woodstock, so go figure

Bonus question, who was the boyish lead singer of this 60's English Mod Group?

He is very talented. Funny as it seems, since he founded Humble Pie, I think the group was much better with Steve Mariott as the leader.

I became versed with the Small Faces and The Herd and the Foundations and the Tremeloes and Dave, Dee, Dozy Beaky Mick and Titch. Somewhat of a golden age of music for me in my early teens. I think Frampton is great, has a nice portfolio.

46. Traditionally, whatever chart position a song peaks at is what's cited when discussing a hit
Edited on Wed Aug-29-07 06:28 PM by brentspeak
Year-end total sales have never been used to determine a song's chart status. It's always been, "they reached the Top 10 in July, 1966 with such-and-such tune..."

47. That is just not true. One may say that a song 'reached' a certain
status, but when looking back historically, it is year end sales. That is the criteria that Billboard magazine uses, and so that is what I go by. I think Billboard is a little more credible than any other source, when talking about chart positions.

If you are in the music industry you would keep track of dollars.
If you are a fan you keep track by chart position.
If you are an audiophil only the music matters.

It may have not been in the Top 100 for its year ('67, I think) but it was a #11 American hit. It's a cool sad one, and "Build Me Up Buttercup" is one of the catchiest songs ever.

Edited on Wed Aug-29-07 03:25 PM by brentspeak
A lot of artists normally thought of as "one-hit wonders" usually had at least one other Top 100 hit, normally the followup to their well-known hit, and often in the Top 40.

Example: American Breed had a Top Five smash with "Bend Me, Shape Me," a song that's still heard a lot on oldies radio. But few people remember that American Breed followed that up with "Step Out Of Your Mind", which just barely made the Top 40 and which is almost never played on oldies radio today.

44. Dominique by the Singing Nun

DOMINIQUE (Original French Lyrics)

Dominique, nique, nique,
S’en allait tous simplement
Routier pauvre et chantant.
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,

A l’époque où Jean Sans Terre
D’Angleterre était le roi,
Dominique, notre Père,
Combattit les Albigeois.

Dominique, nique, nique,
S’en allait tous simplement
Routier pauvre et chantant.
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,

Certain jour, un hérétique
Par des ronces le conduit,
Mais notre Père, Dominique,
Par sa joie le convertit-

Dominique, nique, nique,
S’en allait tous simplement
Routier pauvre et chantant.
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,

Ni chameau, ni diligence,
Il parcourt l’Europe à pied,
Scandinavie ou Provence,
Dans la sainte pauvreté.

Dominique, nique, nique,
S’en allait tous simplement
Routier pauvre et chantant.
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,

Enflammá des toutes écoles
Filles et garçons pleins d’ardeur,
Et pour semer la parole,
Inventá les Frères Prêcheurs.

Dominique, nique, nique,
S’en allait tous simplement
Routier pauvre et chantant.
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,

Chez Dominique et ses frères,
Le pain s’en va à manquer,
Et deux anges se preséntèrent,
Portant deux grands pains dorés.

Dominique, nique, nique,
S’en allait tous simplement
Routier pauvre et chantant.
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,

Dominique vit en rêve
Les prêcheurs du monde entier
Sous le manteau de la Vierge
En grand nombre rassemblés.

Dominique, nique, nique,
S’en allait tous simplement
Routier pauvre et chantant.
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,

Dominique, mon bon Père,
Garde-nous simples et gais
Pour announcer à nos frères
La Vie et la Verité.

Dominique, nique, nique,
S’en allait tous simplement
Routier pauvre et chantant.
En tous chemins, en tous lieux,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu,
Il ne parle que du bon Dieu

"Pretty Ballerina", a pretty cool song that has a similar feel to "Walk Away Renee", made the Top 20 a few months later. I'm not sure if it made the Top 100 on the year-end charts, though.

69. The follow-up was a minor hit
It made the Top Forty, but wasn't a huge hit by any stretch. The cool thing about it is it's one of the more interesting re-writes of an earlier hit single that actually became a hit. You know how after the Four Tops made #1 with "I Can't Help Myself" and Holland-Dozier-Holland rushed to put together a similar-sounding follow-up, acknowledging the similarity by titling it "It's the Same Old Song"? Well, the Soul Survivors followed up "Expressway to Your Heart" with "Explosion in My Soul" a musically similar, intense-sounding blue-eyed soul number, albeit without the cool traffic sounds in the background that were on their first hit! haha

67. Bachman-Turner Overdrive
did that one. They actually had a few other hits, including "Takin' Care of Business", "Let It Ride", "Roll Down the Highway" (I think that's the title), and "Hey You." "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" was their only #1, hit, though.

"Double Shot of My Baby's Love" is a great one-hit wonder, too.

68. Some interesting trivia about him
(Well, interesting by my standards at least. haha) He managed a #2 pop hit with "Suspicion" in 1964, which was his only major pop hit, but he re-surfaced with a double-sided hit on the country charts a decade later. One side was (in my opinion, a pretty weird choice) a cover of Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Say Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose" (#35 country hit) and the other side was the song "Amarillo by Morning" (#31 country hit) which was covered about ten years later by George Strait, was a top five country hit, and became one of Strait's signature songs.

79. I think that Wayne Newton and 1963's "Danke Shoen" needs to be mentioned

No one and I mean NO ONE (not even Clint Holmes) got more out of one song that Wayne did.

82. I used to have the 45 to that, and the interesting thing is that, on the flip side
was the same song, only recorded backwards!

72. "Incense" is their only major hit
and a great song. They did manage a few other minor Hot 100-charters, including a version of "Good Morning Starshine" that competed with Oliver's, and made the Top Forty one additional time besides "Incense", with the #23 hit "Tomorrow." It's actually my favorite of their hits; I love the drumming and the "psychedelic" guitar solo.

74. They actually charted higher with "Twilight Zone"
in the early eighties, though "Radar Love" was probably the bigger album-rock hit.
