..."This Girl is a Woman Now."

P.S.: I'm not making that up.

But songs like that were far from rare in those years. You also had, of course, Steve Lawrence's "Go Away Little Girl"...and even Jefferson Airplane did a take on theme, "Come Up the Years" (with a lovely tune, by the way).

And, to be honest, those songs probably sound worse now because there's a lot more sexual activity at a younger age now than there was then. I would hazard a guess that, to most listeners back in those days, whatever feelings the singer had for the "younger girl," he was not really contemplating them jumping into bed together.

It came out a little after I got my first transistor radio. But I have to admit, I was a little too young at the time to know what the song was actually about.

2. Delia's Gone by Johnny Cash is a pretty good candidate.
Delia, oh, Delia Delia all my life
If I hadn't have shot poor
Delia I'd have had her for my wife
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

I went up to Memphis
And I met Delia there Found her in her parlor
And I tied to her chair
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

She was low down and trifling
And she was cold and mean
Kind of evil make me want to Grab my sub machine
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

First time I shot her I shot her in the side
Hard to watch her suffer
But with the second shot she died
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

But jailer, oh, jailer Jailer,
I can't sleep 'Cause all around my bedside
I hear the patter of Delia's feet
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

So if you woman's devilish
You can let her run
Or you can bring her down and do her
Like Delia got done
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

D.O.A
Bloodrock
Bloodrock 2

Laying here looking at the ceiling
Someone lays a sheet across my chest
Something warm is flowing down my fingers
Pain is flowing all through my back

I try to move my arms and there's no feeling
And when I look I see there's nothing there
The face beside me stopped it totally bleeding
The girl I knew has such a distant stare

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Then I looked straight at the attendant
His face is pale as it can be
He bends and whispers something softly
He says there's no chance for me

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Life is flowing out my body
Pain is flowing out with my blood
The sheets are red and moist where I'm lying
God in Heaven, teach me how to die

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

30. Van Halen did a song called D.O.A too on their 2nd album
We was broke and hungry on a summer day.
They sent the sheriff down to try and drive us away.
We was sittin' ducks for the police man.
They found a dirty faced kid in a garbage can.
And I'm alone, I'm on the highway, wanted dead or alive,
dead or alive.
Broken down and dirty, dressed in rags
a from the day my mama told me, "Boy, you pack your bags."
Send the mayor down in his pickup truck.
The jury look at me, say, "Outta luck."
And I'm alone, I'm on the highway, wanted dead or alive,
dead or alive.
Now, I'm broken down and dirty, dressed in rags
a from the day my mama told me, "Boy, you pack your bags."
We was sittin' ducks for the police man.
They found a dirty faced kid in a garbage can.
And I'm alone, I'm on the highway, wanted dead or alive,
dead or alive

38. In the same vein as "D.O.A."
there is "One" by Metallica.

I cant remember anything
Cant tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
Im waking up I can not see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me

Back in the womb its much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But cant look forward to reveal
Look to the time when Ill live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me
Now the world is gone Im just one
Oh god, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

...after you'd had a little smoke with your pals and were starting to feel good about everything....and then you'd hear the goddamn sirens and wonder for a moment or two if the cops were really out there and coming for you....damn, I hated that song from the first 15 seconds of the first time I heard it.

5. dammit...here ya go ---
timothy~the buoys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGNdvKvbxYQ

Trapped in a mine that had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
Were Joe and me

Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?

Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll have a swig
And then there's some for you."

Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?

I must have blacked out just around then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around
To finding Timothy
Timothy...

About the crash of an airplane carrying the Wichita State University football team in 1970.

The lyrics don't do it justice. You really gotta hear it. There's a sample here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_Marshall

But in 1970 the Marshall Football team all died in an airplane crash- they made a movie about it a couple of years ago- in the above link.

Pretty WEIRD that two college football teams airplanes crashed in 1970.

Pieces Of April - Three Dog Night

April gave us springtime And the promise of the flowers And the feeling that we both shared And the love that we called ours We had no time for sadness That's a road we each had crossed We were living a time meant for us And even when it would rain we would laugh it off I've got pieces of April I keep them in a memory bouquet I've got pieces of April But it's a morning in May

18. "Run For Your Life" by The Beatles (sung by John)
Edited on Wed Aug-29-07 04:14 PM by SouthoftheBorderPaul
I'm sure there are some very obscure songs that are far creepier but in terms of mainstream, well-known songs, this one gets my vote:

"Run For Your Life"

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

Well you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Na, na, na
Na, na, na
Na, na, na
Na, na, na

31. Fancy by Reba McEntire

I remember it all very well lookin' back
It was the summer I turned eighteen
We lived in a one room, rundown shack
On the outskirts of New Orleans
We didn't have money for food or rent
To say the least we were hard pressed
Then Mama spent every last penny we had
To buy me a dancin' dress

Mama washed and combed and curled my hair
And she painted my eyes and lips
Then I stepped into a satin' dancin' dress That had a split on the side clean up
to my hip
It was red velvet trim and it fit me good
Standin' back from the lookin' glass
There stood a woman where a half grown kid
had stood

She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down
She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down

Mama dabbled a little bit of perfume on my neck
And she kissed my cheek
Then I saw the tears wellin' up in her troubled eys
As she started to speak
She looked at a pitiful shack and then she looked at me and took a ragged breath
She said your Pa's runned off and I'm real sick
And the baby's gonna starve to death

She handed me a heart shaped locket that said
"To thine own self be true"
And I shivered as I watched a roach crawl accross
The toe of my high heeled shoe
It sounded like somebody else that was talkin'
Askin' "Mama what do I do?"
She said just be nice to the gentlemen Fancy
They'll be nice to you

She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down
Here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down
Lord forgive me for what I do,
But if you want out, well it's up to you
Don't let me down now, your Mama's gonna move you uptown

Well, that was the last time I saw my Ma
When I left that rickety shack
The welfare people came and took the baby
Mama died and I ain't been back
But the wheels of fate had started to turn
And for me there was no way out
And it wasn't very long 'til I knew exactly
What my Mama'd been talkin' about

I knew what I had to do and I made myself this solemn vow
That I's gonna be a lady someday
Though I didn't know when or how
But I couldn't see spending the rest of my life
With my head hung down in shame you know
I might have been born just plain white trash
But Fancy was my name

She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down
She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down

It wasn't long after that benevolent man
Took me in off the street
And one week later I was pourin' his tea
In a five room hotel suite

I charmed a king, congressman
And an occasional aristocrat
Then I got me a Georgia mansion
In an elegant New York townhouse flat
And I ain't done bad

Now in this world there's a lot of self-righteous
hippocrates
That would call me bad
And criticize Mama for turning me out
No matter how little we had

But though I ain't had to worry 'bout nothin'
For nigh on fifteen years
I can still hear the desperation in my poor
Mama's voice ringin' in my ear

Here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down
O Here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down
Lord, forgive me for what I do
But if you want out well it's up to you
Now don't let me down
You Mama's gonna move you uptown

I guess she did

'Christine Sixteen' by Kiss? 'I don't usually say things like this to girls your age, but when i saw you coming out of school that day, that day i knew, I KNEW i've got to have you i've got to have you!'

Well those were the days of Star magazine and 14 year old girls hanging out with Led Zep.

35. Every breath you take
Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
Ill be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
Ill be watching you

Oh, cant you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
Ill be watching you

Since youve gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but its you I cant replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please...

Oh, cant you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every breath you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
Ill be watching you

Every move you make
Every step you take
Ill be watching you

Ill be watching you
Ill be watching you
Ill be watching you
Ill be watching you...

37. "The Snake" by Al Wilson
Maybe this song really is nothing more than a novelty song about a woman who decided to take care of a snake and got bit, but it always gives me the creeps, more than many more explicit songs.

"The Snake" by Al Wilson

On her way to work one morning
Down the path along side the lake
A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake
His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew
"Oh well," she cried, "I'll take you in and I'll take care of you"
"Take me in oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

She wrapped him up all cozy in a curvature of silk
And then laid him by the fireside with some honey and some milk
Now she hurried home from work that night as soon as she arrived
She found that pretty snake she'd taking in had been revived
"Take me in, oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

Now she clutched him to her bosom, "You're so beautiful," she cried
"But if I hadn't brought you in by now you might have died"
Now she stroked his pretty skin and then she kissed and held him tight
But instead of saying thanks, that snake gave her a vicious bite
"Take me in, oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

"I saved you," cried that woman
"And you've bit me even, why?
You know your bite is poisonous and now I'm going to die"
"Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin
"You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in
"Take me in, oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

40. "Past, Present and Future" by the Shangri-Las
Actually, this one would probably be better described as haunting than creepy. It was a very minor hit for the mid-sixties-era girl group, but it's one of my favorites that they recorded. I'll post the lyrics, but they really don't do the song justice, as the singer's voice (the song is spoken-word) and the music are much of what makes the song have the feel it has. It's a song about a girl who the song hints has been raped trying to come to terms with every trusting another man.

The past, past, well now let me tell you about the past
The past is filled with silent joys and broken toys,
laughing girls and teasing boys,
Was I ever in love? I called it love- I mean, it felt like love,
There were moments when, well, there were moments when

Present, Go out with you? Why not
Do I like to dance? Of Course,
Take a walk along the beach tonight? I'd love to,
But don't try to touch me, don't try to touch me
Cos that will never happen again,
Shall we dance

Instrumental

The future, Tommorow? well tommorows a long way off
Maybe someday I'll have somebody's hand
Maybe somewhere someone will understand
You know I used to sing- a tisket a tasket a green and yellow basket
I'm all packed up and I'm on my way and I'm gonna fall in love,
But at the moment it doesn't look good
At the moment it will never happen again

I don't think it will ever happen again.

44. Angie Baby - Helen Reddy
You live your life in the songs you hear
On the rock and roll radio
And when a young girl doesn't have any friends
That's a really nice place to go
Folks hoping you'd turn out cool
But they had to take you outta school
You're a little touched you know, Angie Baby

Lovers appear in your room each night
And they whirl you across the floor
But they always seem to fade away
When your daddy taps on your door
Angie girl, are you all right
Tell the radio good-night
All alone once more, Angie Baby

Angie Baby, you're a special lady
Living in a world of make-believe
Well, maybe

Stopping at her house is a neighbor boy
With evil on his mind
'Cause he's been peeking in Angie's room
At night through her window blind
I see your folks have gone away
Would you dance with me today
I'll show you how to have a good time, Angie Baby

When he walks in her room,
He feels confused like he's walked into a play
And the music's so loud it spins him around
'Til his soul has lost its way
And as she turns the volume down
He's getting smaller with the sound
It seems to pull him off the ground
Toward the radio he's bound never to be found

The headlines read that a boy disappeared
and everyone thinks he died
'Cept a crazy girl with a secret lover
Who keeps her satisfied
It's so nice to be insane
No one asks you to explain
Radio by your side, Angie Baby

Angie Baby, you're a special lady
Living in a world of make-believe
Well, maybe
Well, maybe

85. I just heard that on the radio!
That was the first one I thought of when I saw this thread. Second: "Swamp Witch", by Jim Stafford of all people (the "Spiders and Snakes" guy). He performed it on his variety show (damn the '70s) when I was about 8 years old and I never forgot it. Freaked me right out, especially the way he'd hiss "Hhhhhhhattieeee" every time. :scared:

Black water Hattie lived back in the swamp
Where the strange green reptiles crawl
Snakes hang thick from the cypress trees
Like sausage on a smokehouse wall
Where the swamp is alive with a thousand eyes
An' all of them watching you
Stay off the track to Hattie's Shack in the back of the Black Bayou

Way up the road from Hattie's Shack
Lies a sleepy little Okeechobee town
Talk of swamp witch Hattie lock you in when the sun go down
Rumours of what she'd done, rumours of what she'd do
Kept folks off the track of hattie's shack
In the back of the Black Bayou

One day brought the rain and the rain stayed on
And the swamp water overflowed
'skeeters and the fever grabbed the town like a fist
Doctor Jackson was the first to go
Some say the plague wasa brought by Hattie
There was talk of a hang'n too
But the talk got shackled by the howls and the cackles
From the bowels of the Black bayou

Early one morn 'tween dark and dawn when shadows filled the sky
There came an unseen caller on a town where road run dry
You'd swear there was found a big black round
Vat full of gurgling brew

Whispering sounds as the folk gathered round
"It came from the Black Bayou"
There ain't much pride when you're trapped inside
A slowly sink'n ship
Scooped up the liquid deep and green
And the whole town took a sip
Fever went away and the very next day the skies again were blue
Let's thank old hattie for sav'n our town
We'll fetch her from the Black Bayou

Party of ten of the town's best men headed for Hattie's Shack
Said Swamp Witch magic was useful and good
And they're gonna bring hattie back
Never found Hattie and they never found the shack
Never made the trip back in
There was a parchment note they found tacked to a stump
Said don't come look'n again

49. I've always found 'Rabbit in Your Headlights' by Radiohead to be pretty damn creepy...
Includes an unsettling (and often banned) video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BlPQDg45YE
The vocal section in the middle is from 'Jacob's Ladder' and is actually the voice of Danny Aiello  ...an incredibly creepy movie, in any case, and an inclusion of a quote from it makes the song all the more unsettling...

I'm a rabbit in your headlights
Scared of the spotlight
You don't come to visit
I'm stuck on this bed

Thin rubber gloves
She laughs when she's crying
She cries when she's laughing

Fat bloody fingers are sucking your soul away

I'm a rabbit in your headlights
Christian suburbanite
Washed down the toilet
Money to burn

Fat bloody fingers are sucking your soul away

"If you're frightened of dying and then you hold on
You'll see devils tearing your life away
But, if you've made your peace
Then the devils are really angels
Freeing you from the Earth... from the Earth"

White worms on the underground
Caught between stations
Butter fingers
I'm losing my patience

I'm a rabbit in your headlights
Christian suburbanite
You got money to burn

Fat bloody fingers are sucking your soul away... away... away..

70. Creepiest Radiohead song, IMO - Climbing Up The Walls
I am the key to the lock in your house
That keeps your toys in the basement
And if you get too far inside
You'll only see my reflection

It's always best when the light is off
I am the pick in the ice
Do not cry out or hit the alarm
You know we're friends till we die

And either way you turn
I'll be there
Open up your skull
I'll be there
Climbing up the walls

It's always best when the light is off
It's always better on the outside
Fifteen blows to the back of your head
Fifteen blows to your mind

So lock the kids up safe tonight
Put the eyes in the cupboard
I've got the smell of a local man
Who's got the loneliest feeling

That either way he turns
I'll be there
Open up your skull
I'll be there

Climbing up the walls
Climbing up the walls
Climbing up the walls

51. Polk Salad Annie
POLK SALAD ANNIE
Tony Joe White
(words & music by Tony Joe White)

(Recitation)

If some of ya'll never been down South too much...
I'm gonna tell you a little bit about this, so that you'll understand
What I'm talking about
Down there we have a plant that grows out in the
woods and the fields,
looks somethin' like a turnip green.
Everybody calls it Polk salad. Polk salad.
Used to know a girl that lived down there and
she'd go out in the evenings and pick a mess of it...
Carry it home and cook it for supper, 'cause that's about all they had to eat,
But they did all right.

Down in Louisiana Where the alligators grow so mean
There lived a girl that I swear to the world Made the alligators look tame

Polk salad Annie polk salad Annie
Everybody said it was a shame
Cause her mama was working on the chain-gang
(a mean, vicious woman)

Everyday 'fore supper time She'd go down by the truck patch
And pick her a mess o' Polk salad And carry it home in a tote sack

Polk salad Annie 'Gators got you granny
Everybody said it was a shame
'Cause her mama was aworkin' on the chain-gang
(a wretched, spiteful, straight-razor totin' woman,
Lord have mercy. Pick a mess of it)

Her daddy was lazy and no count
Claimed he had a bad back
All her brothers were fit for was stealin' watermelons out of my truck patch
Polk salad Annie, the gators got your granny
Everybody said it was a shame
Cause her mama was a working' on the chain gang
(Sock a little polk salad to me, you know I need a mess of it)

I tried to love you I thought I could
I tried to own you I thought I would
I want to peel the skin from your face
Before the real you lays to waste

You told me Im the only one
Sweet little angel you should have run
Lying, crying, dying to leave
Innocence creates my hell

Cheating myself still you know more
It would be so easy with a whore
Try to understand me little girl
My twisted passion to be your world

Lost inside my sick head
I live for you but Im not alive
Take my hand before I kill
I still love you, but, I still burn

Yeah, love, hate, love (3x)
Oooh, love, hate, love
Yeah, love, hate, love

55. Hamburger Lady - Throbbing Gristle
By far worse is the hambuger lady,
We must heal them for the qualified technicians,
Worse,
Alternating nights are automatic,
She's lying there,

Hamburger Lady
Hamburger Lady

She's dying,
She is burned from the waist up,
On her arm,
Her ear is burned,
Her eyelashes are burned,
She can't hold things up,
And even with medical advances,
There's no end in sight,
For hamburger lady,
She wants me to tell you of her claim mind,
From which the double play laying,
The proping chair,
Leave her,
She's Burned from the waist down,
Has to eat her life through tubes,

Hamburger Lady
Hamburger Lady

She's okay if you change the tubes,
Tubes in her legs,
the tubes in her arms,
She's okay,
Then it came out and saw the burn net,
Indeed in the account of killing,
And it flashed on the carpet,
And it flashed on the floor,
The hamburger lady,
She came to rest,
Because of the burn she needs relief,
From the medication,
The qualified Technician,

Hamburger Lady
Hamburger Lady

As disturbing as the lyrics are, the music is far more creepy, even by TG standards.

indiana wants me~r dean taylor

(police sirens}

Mmm mm-mmmm-mm
Mmm mm-mmmm-mm

Indiana wants me
Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me
Lord, I can't go back there
I wish I had you to talk to

If a man ever needed dyin', he did
No one had the right to say what he said about you
And it's so cold and lonely here without you
Out there the law's a-comin'
I'm scared and so tired of runnin'

Indiana wants me
Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me
Lord, I can't go back there
I wish I had you to talk to

It hurts to see the man that I've become
And to know I'll never see the morning sun shine on the land
I'll never see your smilin' face or touch your hand
If just once more I could see
You, our home, and our little baby

Indiana wants me
Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me
Lord, I can't go back there
{police sirens}
I wish I had you to talk to

I hope this letter finds its way to you
Forgive me, Love, for the shame I put you through and all the tears
Hang on, Love, to the memories of those happy years
Red lights are flashin' around me
Yeah, Love, it looks like they found me

Indiana wants me
Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me
Lord, I can't go back there
I wish I had you to talk to

Indiana wants me (this is the police, you are surrounded)
Lord, I can't go back there (give yourself up)
Indiana wants me (this is the police, give yourself up)
Lord, I can't go back there (you are surrounded)

90. "Teen Angel":
Teen angel, teen angel, teen angel, ooh, ooh

That fateful night the car was stalled
Upon the railroad track
I pulled you out and we were safe
But you went running back

Teen angel, can you hear me
Teen angel, can you see me
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love

What was it you were looking for
That took your life that night
They said they found my high school ring
Clutched in your fingers tight

Teen angel, can you hear me
Teen angel, can you see me
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love

Just sweet sixteen, and now you're gone
They've taken you away.
I'll never kiss your lips again
They buried you today

Teen angel, can you hear me
Teen angel, can you see me
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love
Teen angel, teen angel, answer me, please

92. Strange Things Happen in this World or "Laurie"
This came out mid sixties and I can still sing the thing from memory -- as the hair on my arms stands up.

Last night at the dance I met Laurie,
So lovely and warm, an angel of a girl.
Last night I fell in love with Laurie -
Strange things happen in this world.

As I walked her home,
She said it was her birthday.
I pulled her close and said
"Will I see you anymore?"
Then suddenly she asked for my sweater
And said that she was very, very cold.

I kissed her goodnight
At her door and started home,
Then thought about my sweater
And went right back instead.
I knocked at her door and a man appeared.
I told why I'd come, then he said:

"You're wrong, son.
You weren't with my daughter.
How can you be so cruel
To come to me this way?
My Laurie left this world on her birthday -
She died a year ago today."

A strange force drew me to the graveyard.
I stood in the dark,
I saw the shadows wave,
And then I looked and saw my sweater
Lyin' there upon her grave.

Strange things happen in this world.

119. That was Dickie Lee, who also did the creepy "Patches"
Edited on Tue Sep-04-07 09:50 PM by onager
About a teen suicide pact, I guess...

Down by the river, that flows by the coal-yard,
Stand wooden houses with shutters torn down,
There lived a girl everybody called Patches,
Patches, my darling, of old Shantytown.

We planned to marry when June brought the summer,
I couldn't wait to make Patches my bride,
Now I don't see how that ever can happen,
My folks say "No" and my heart breaks inside.

Patches, oh what can I do?
I swear I'll always love you.
But a girl from that place, would just bring me disgrace,
My folks won't let me love you.

I hear a neighbor, telling my father,
He says a girl name of Patches was found,
Floating face down in that dirty old river,
That flows by the coal-yard, in old Shantytown.

Patches, oh what can I do?
I swear I'll always love you.
It may not be right, but I'll join you tonight,
Patches, I'm coming to you...

Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 12:01 PM by annonymous
Timothy by The Buoys, DOA by Bloodrock, I Hate Mondays by The Boomtown Rats, Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town by Kenny Rogers. There is a lot more censorship than there was in the 70's so songs like those would not get airplay now. The creepiest song still played on the radio has to be Every Breath You Take by The Police. Runner up would be Young Girl by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap.

116. Dream Song by Ministry creeps me out still.
There's no real lyrics,though voices come in and out,and a demonic voice speaking in an evil whisper says a bit.The music is all a mix of tones,bells and choir like voices and whispers weaving in and out over a slow industrial beat.Towards the end a girl starts talking about her dream;

its really hot, and I had like, like no fan, or anything,
ya know fine, and I had this weirdest, weirdest, weirdest, like nightmare,
ya know how you have some nightmares, when there like, there like, dreams,
but their not dreams, their like real? Ya know? And like you feel, it felt alive,
when your dreaming, you feel alive, when your dreaming.
And I had this dream, when this angel came up, just, like, up my fire escape,
cause I don't have any bars on my windows, cause I don't believe in bars on my windows,
and, she was there in my room, just lying there, she came, and she kissed me.
And I woke up, and I must have come.Do you believe in angels?

The male voice comes back and says,"NO!" in a harsh whisper, and the song winds to a close.

Here's a Youtube vid that uses the song;

118. brown mountain lights
http://youtube.com/watch?v=QhRn2kiKXq0

Brown Mountain Light

Way up on old Linville Mountain
Where the bear and the catamount reign
A strange ghostly light appears every night
Which no scientist or hunter can explain.

In the days of the old covered wagon
When they camped on the flats for the night
With the moon shinin' dim o'er the old canyon rim
They watched for that brown mountain light.

High on the mountain
And down in the valley below
It shines like the crown of an angel
And fades as the mists come and go

Way over yonder
Night after night until dawn
A faithful old slave comes back from the grave
Is searching for his master who's long gone.

Many years ago a southern planter
Came huntin' in this wide world alone
Then so they say the hunter lost his way
And never returned to his home.

His trusting ol' slave brought a lantern
And searched but in vain day and night
Now the ol' slave is gone
but his spirit lingers on

And the lantern it still casts it's light.

121. Good grief, where to start?
Edited on Tue Sep-04-07 10:20 PM by onager
Next time your parents start whining about the weird lyrics of today's music, lay some of these winners from the Happy Days/Sixties era on them:

"Tell Laura I Love Her"--guy wants to buy his girlfriend an engagement ring, gets killed racing his car to do it.
"Teen Angel"--girl smashed by oncoming train
"Endless Sleep"--teen suicide pact by drowning apparently averted at end of song

Dickie Lee--a one-man Fifties Creep Factory in a high-school letter jacket and Brylcreemed hairdo. Lee cranked out a whole raft of creepies, including the abovementioned "Strange Things Happen" about a ghost-girl, and "Patches" about a guy drowning himself after his girlfriend does likewise.

"Transfusion" by Nervous Narvus--funny novelty song about car wrecks. "Slip the juice to me, Bruce!"
"Last Date"--from 1964, girl killed in car crash. (Covered by Pearl Jam a few years ago.)
"Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-Las: guy killed in motorcycle crash. With sound effects.

"Dead Man's Curve" by Jan & Dean--Ditto on the sound effects. Attained extra Creep Factor when Jan Berry crashed his 1966 Corvette into the back of a truck and suffered permanent brain damage. In case you ever wondered, L.A. has several "Dead Man's Curves." The one in the song is a tricky bend in Sunset Blvd. An even trickier stretch of road with that name is up on the infamous Mulholland Drive. That curve can send reckless/stupid drivers plunging thru the unsuspecting roof of a house several hundred feet below.

"I Want My Baby Back"--hilarious 1964 send-up combining the stories of both "Last Date" and "Leader of the Pack," with a whiff (yech!) of necrophilia at the end. "I DIG you so much, baby!" Humorless British censors actually banned this spoof of the Teen Death Genre.

"Son, Don't Go Near The Indians"--country-western gets into the creep act. Along with insulting Native Americans, Rex Allen's charming little ditty dealt with brother-sister incest. Or nearly so.

"Running Bear"--another musical equivalent of Wounded Knee, this time with doomed Injun lovers simultaneously drowning. Written by J.P. Richardson, a/k/a The Big Bopper, who died in the same 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and Richie Valens.

"I Pulled The Plug (On My Love)"--I can't find any mention of this winner on the Internets, which may be a good thing. Released in 1976 and...ahem...inspired by the sad story of Karen Ann Quinlan, the Terry Schiavo of her era.

Hang your head, Tom Dooley,
Hang your head and cry;
You killed poor Laurie Foster,
And you know you're bound to die.
You left her by the roadside
Where you begged to be excused;
You left her by the roadside,
Then you hid her clothes and shoes.

Hang your head, Tom Dooley,
Hang your head and cry;
You killed poor Laurie Foster,
And you know you're bound to die.

You took her on the hillside
For to make her your wife;
You took her on the hillside,
And ther you took her life.

You dug the grave four feet long
And you dug it three feet deep;
You rolled the cold clay over her
And tromped it with your feet.

Hang your head, Tom Dooley,
Hang your head and cry;
You killed poor Laurie Foster,
And you know you're bound to die.

"Trouble, oh it's trouble
A-rollin' through my breast;
As long as I'm a-livin', boys,
They ain't a-gonna let me rest.

I know they're gonna hang me,
Tomorrow I'll be dead,
Though I never even harmed a hair
On poor little Laurie's head."

Hang your head, Tom Dooley,
Hang your head and cry;
You killed poor Laurie Foster,
And you know you're bound to die.

"In this world and one more
Then reckon where I'll be;
If is wasn't for Sheriff Grayson,
I'd be in Tennesee.

You can take down my old violin
And play it all you please.
For at this time tomorrow, boys,
Iit'll be of no use to me."

Hang your head, Tom Dooley,
Hang your head and cry;
You killed poor Laurie Foster,
And you know you're bound to die.

"At this time tomorrow
Where do you reckon I'll be?
Away down yonder in the holler
Hangin' on a white oak tree.

Hang your head, Tom Dooley,
Hang your head and cry;
You killed poor Laurie Foster,
And you know you're bound to die.

123. the ghost of hank williams
I was thumbin' back from Montgomery
with a guitar on my back
When a stranger pulled up beside me in an antique Cadillac.
Well, he was dressed like 1950, half drunk and hallow eyed
Its a long walk to Nashville, would you like a ride, son.
He sat down in the front seat, and turned on the radio
and them sad old songs comin' outta them speakers was solid country gold.
Then I noticed the stranger was ghost white pale when he asked me for a light.
And knew there was somethin' strange about this ride.

CHORUS:
He said: Mister can you make folks cry when you play and sang.
Can you pay your dues, can you moan the blues
Can you bend them guitar strangs.
He said: Boy, can you make folks feel what you feel inside,
Cause if your big star bound let me warn you its a long hard ride.

Well, he cried just south of Nashville, and he turned that car around.
he said: (spoken) this is where you get off, boy
cause I'm going back to Alabam'.
I stepped out of that ole Cadillac and I said Mister, many thanks.
he said you don't have to call me mister, Mister.
The whole world calls me Hank.

124.  you'll never leave harlan alive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTFalg7JhJA

In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky
That's the place where I trace my bloodline
And it's there I read on a hillside gravestone
You will never leave Harlan alive

Oh, my granddad's dad walked down
Katahrins Mountain
And he asked Tillie Helton to be his bride
Said, won't you walk with me out of the mouth
Of this holler
Or we'll never leave Harlan alive

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning
And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life just thinkin' of how to get away

No one ever knew there was coal in them mountains
'Til a man from the Northeast arrived
Waving hundred dollar bills he said I'll pay ya for your minerals
But he never left Harlan alive

Granny sold out cheap and they moved out west
Of Pineville
To a farm where big Richland River winds
I bet they danced them a jig, laughed and sang a new song
Who said we'd never leave Harlan alive

But the times got hard and tobacco wasn't selling
And ole granddad knew what he'd do to survive
He went and dug for Harlan coal
And sent the money back to granny
But he never left Harlan alive

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning
And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life just thinkin' of how to get away

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning
And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life digging coal from the bottom of your grave

In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky
That's the place where I trace my bloodline
And it's there I read on a hillside gravestone
You will never leave Harlan alive

That song used to really creep me out.

They made a movie out of it in the mid-70s to try to "explain" Billy Joe's suicide and what it was that he and his girlfriend threw off the Tallahatchee bridge, but I always thought it was all better left to the imagination.

134. "Babe" from Pink Floyd's the Wall
"Babe, don't leave me now,
How could you treat me this way?
remember the flowers I sent...I need you, babe
to put through the shredder in front of my friends, oh babe.

Don't leave me now
How could you go
when you know how I need you, need you
to beat to a pulp on a Saturday night, oh babe."

------------
In fact, there's quite a few on The Wall that creep me out. "One of My Bad Days" from The Wall is pretty creepy too.

"Day after day,
Love turns grey,
like the skin on a dying man.

And night after night,
we pretend it's alright,
but I have grown older
and you have grown colder
and nothing is very much fun...anymore

And I can feel,
one of my turns coming on.
I feel,
Cold as a razorblade,
tight as a turnicut,
dry as a funeral drum

Run to the bedroom, in the suitcase on the left you'll find my favorite axe.
Don't look so frightened, this is just a passing phase, one of my bad days.
Would you like to watch TV, or get between the sheets, or comtemplate the silent freeway
Would you like something to eat?
Would you like to learn to fly?
Would you like to see me try?

Would you like to call the cops?
Do you think it's time I stop?
Why are you running away.

-------------------------
But perhaps my altime creepy song is "Cousin Kevin" from The Who's Tommy

We're on our own cousin
All alone cousin
Let's think of a game to play
Now the grownups have all gone away
You won't be much fun
Being blind deaf and dumb
But I've no one to play with today
D'you know how to play hide and seek?
To find me it would take you a week
But tied to that chair you won't go anywhere
There's a lot I can do with a freak

How would you feel if I turned on the bath
Ducked your head under and started to laugh
What would you do if I shut you outside
To stand in the rain
And catch cold so you died?

I'm the school bully !
The classroom cheat
The nastiest playfriend
You ever could meet
I'll stick pins in your fingers
And tread on your feet..

We're on our own cousin
All alone cousin
Let's think of a game to play
Now the grownups have all gone away
You won't be much fun
Being blind deaf and dumb
But I've no one to play with today
D'you know how to play hide and seek?
To find me it would take you a week
But tied to that chair you won't go anywhere
There's a lot I can do to a freak

Maybe a cigarette burn on your arm
Would change your expression to one of alarm
I'll drag you around by a lock of your hair
Or give you a push at the top of the stairs..

I'm the school bully !
The classroom cheat
The nastiest playfriend
You ever could meet
I'll put glass in your dinner
And spikes in your seat..

135. Can't believe no one has mentioned "Fiddle About" from Tommy
yet either.

"Uncle ernie:

I'm your wicked uncle ernie
I'm glad you won't see or hear me
As I fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !

Your mother left me here to mind you
Now I'm doing what I want to
Fiddling about
Fiddling about
Fiddle about!

Down with the bedclothes
Up with your nightshirt!
Fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !

Fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !

You won't shout as I fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !
Fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !
Fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !
Fiddle about
Fiddle about
Fiddle about !
Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle
Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle
Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle
Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle...fiddle!
