Help, mens sizing question. |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-31-07 09:38 AM by GirlinContempt
My ability to fairly accurately guess mens sizing ends when they reach about size 50-52. My size chart, which goes by height and weight and gives the average size from someone who's say, 5'8 and 175lbs ends at size 62.
Here's my question. Does anyone have any idea what size a man would be if he was around 6' tall, and 600-700 lbs. I know that is a big range, but just *any* idea would be great.
Oh, and I'm working in formalwear, so I'm trying to figure out chest/coat size.

when I was junior in hs, I was 425, I was 6'2 at the time, and I was in a 54-56....so, my guess for another 175lbs....hmm, probably 64-66, but thats just my guess...for shirt size, I'd say at least a 6, or 7x.

My chart says you'd be in a 60ish at that size, and it's been accurate for others, but of course, everyone is different. Oh wait, do you mean 54-56 waist? I wish I could just measure the guy. Thanks though :)

the only pants I could find in that size were...hmm, Ben Davis pants? I think they were ben davis pants, their logo was a playtapus.....thats what the size said on the pants, I'm currently in 48-50's, at 6'4(at 367lbs).
For football that year in hs, I was a 5x, so scratch my shirt size recommendation, you probably have to get a 9/10 x shirt for this guy, and don't worry about getting it too big, I'm a big guy, and I love it when the clothes I have, have room to move around in...:)

That makes more sense. A 56 waist is like a 62 coat. I didn't think to add I'm doing formalwear so I need coat sizing :)

11. sizes for formal wear, ime |
|
are always a few sizes bigger than you actually are....my wife got me a tux coat two years ago and the size on that thing was a 54-56, which to me means a 4x tshirt...and I wear 2x shirts currently...it was weird trying suit coats and what not, so I went a few sizes bigger than I thought I was, and it fit a lot better....I had the same issues when one of my friends got married, and his mother in law fitted me with a tux(I was best man), the measurements on my shoes were even a size, or two bigger as well....

assuming it's a properly made garment. I mean, most guys go up a couple of inches in the waist of the pant because men tend to wear their pants too low. When they pull them up (as the pants have to be, otherwise they look ridiculous) that adds a couple of inches to the waist. However, if your chest measures 40, you're a 40 coat. Maybe a 41-42 if you have especially broad shoulders, or you insist on getting your clothes loose fitting (Mostly that's younger guys who have never worn even a suit before and have no idea how it should fit). However, I can't speak to ill fitting formalwear, which I know exists, same with suits. If it's cut improperly or poorly made, it affects the fit. Shoe size differences are to be expected. Almost no one is the same shoe size in every shoe in every style. It's highly annoying sometimes :D
Sorry, sometimes I'm a bit of a nazi about fitting. I do it every day, and I seem to get in to a t least one 'conversation' a week with some 18 year old guy who's never taken off his t-shirt in his life (which is *fine*, don't get me wrong) who I put a coat on and he insists it's too small. I can grab the back of the jacket and pull it across his shoulders without him moving, so there's plenty of space to spare, and the bride will have my head on a platter if her guys show up in sloppy looking oversize tuxes. I find myself saying more and more often "This is my job. This is what I do every day, Please, trust me. If I took my car to you, I would trust you. It's your job. This is mine. PLEASE."

18. probably bad coats/cuts then, |
|
cause I went to the cheapest places in town....:) And at the time my wife got me my coat, I was, chest size a 48...but I do have broad shoulders, and thats where my issues with most of the coats pertained...
Same thing with tapered jeans, the waist is loose, but the jean legs cut into my legs, because I got me some tree trunk legs....

19. I just updated my last post to ya |

:D I work in a high end place, so all of our stuff is Ralph Lauren, Ecko, Perry Ellis, Claiborne, etc. I've seen what some of our competitors have to offer and I believe it would fit like crap just from looking at it and touching it. But then, we also alter to fit. If you came in, and you had a broad shoulder so I had to give you a bigger jacket, I'd take in the coat through the waist and hips so it fitted properly in the waist.

I've been fitted once, in a fat man shop just outside the Seattle area...and it was the best suit/coat/pants I ever owned...I was...hmm, probably around the 375lb area when I got it(it almost felt like wearing cozy pjs)....and when I got down to 235 my senior year, I even wore the same suit to my...prom....I had to use a lot of belts/suspenders....:)
The only reason I wore it, was because my parents wouldn't pony up for a new suit, and my dads suits were way to short in the arms(I could wear his, but he is 5'6).....:)

Your chest size is your size. If you have a 42" chest, you're a 42 or a 43 coat.

26. Yes, but you have to remember that the male eye |

actually bends the light between a ruler and his... well, you know what I mean. Tends to throw off the readings a bit.

14. My husband - before he started losing weight |
|
was 6'4" and about 350. His waist size was 46 inches. His suit size was 56-58.
I hope that helps.

21. That would vary by age and build wouldn't it? |
|
I suspect that the amount of weight carried below the waist could vary significantly between an active young man vs a sedentary older man at that weight. Probably +/- 8 inches in the chest and +/- 10 inches in waist.

The size charts give a great average. And unless i can measure someone, that's all I have to go by. It always varies, even if you have 2 guys the same height, weight and activity level, but you gotta find a starting place :)
