The band was named after Leonard Skinner, a gym teacher/basketball coach for some of the members at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

57. only becuase, like the others in that list, there is no one named that in the band.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Tucker#Band_name_origin

Band name origin

There was no band member named "Marshall Tucker". Originally, the band called itself The Toy Factory (named after lead-guitarist Toy Caldwell). But by the time the band released its first album they had become the Marshall Tucker Band. During a radio interview in Hempstead, New York in 1973, Tommy Caldwell explained the origins of the band's name:

There's an old blind dude that tunes pianos, and his name is Marshall Tucker... We didn't name the band after him, but we just kind of liked that name and stuck with it.

The band's official website offers additional background:

When MTB first got together in their native Spartanburg back in 1972 they were rehearsing in an old warehouse. They had yet to decide on a name and were discussing what they should call themselves one evening. Someone looked at the tag on the key and it said "Marshall Tucker" and it was suggested they call themselves the Marshall Tucker Band, not knowing it was a real person's name. Because it was time to go to dinner and everyone was hungry they said "sounds great" and the rest is history. A few years later they found out that Marshall Tucker was the name of the person who rented the building before them. His name was still on the key tag because the warehouse owner hadn't changed it yet. Mr. Tucker was a blind piano tuner, who, along with his partner, used the building for their piano business. <1>

It is usually incumbent on the person making the claim to 'prove it', but as I doubt you would do so, here you go:

Molly Hatchet - I loved this group in high school. I couldn't stand Country OR Western, but I dug the crossover 'country rock' sound.

42. Of those three, I'd say Keel.
Being a teen metal-head in the 80's, I tried to like Keel, but found them weak and transparent even by 80's hair-metal standards.

Winger was saved mostly by Reb Beach and Rod Morgenstein.

Nelson at least had some hooky pop tunes.

Keel had no redeeming qualities... 3rd generation hair-metal retreads.

54. I agree that Keel is probably the worst of the three, with lyrics
like 'been fighting all my life for the right to make my stand...' Keel could've used a guy in the band who would say, 'hey Ron that fucking sucks,' but Ron must've already kicked that guy out.

I disagree that Keel were 3rd generation though- they pre-date Winger and Nelson- I'd call 'em probably 2nd.

Hanoi Rocks was the best hair metal band, no? GnR was a good band too.

58. Hanoi and GnR
Edited on Fri Aug-31-07 02:57 PM by southpaw
I've heard a recenly coined classification of bands like Hanoi Rocks, GnR, Faster Pussycat etc.

Sleaze Rock.

Thinking about it, those bands and others like them seemed to not fit the hair-metal mold.

As to Keel being more 2nd gen, I'd agree. I look at bands like Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister and Ratt as being of the first generation of Hair Metal. Bon Jovi brought up the rear of the first wave. Then we started seeing 2nd Gen bands like Keel, Cinderella, White Lion, etc.

I kinds think of bands like Warrant, Winger, Brittney Fox, Pretty Boy Floyd and other late 80's bands as third generation.

65. Hanoi and GnR impress me so much that I'd be inclined to
refer to them in my most flattering of terms: rock-n-roll!

Krokus was kind of a hair band and they started in the mid-70s. Starz too.

Hey check out some early hair metal fashion here:

I posted it in another thread and was disappointed that no one reacted to a vid from '73 with a Frankenstein-like bass player in a bo peep dress with a swastica armband!
