For those who don't know...

That means the Coke (some of) you grew up with. Made with sugar...NOT High Fructose Corn Syrup.

It was in the Hispanic section. It was...gasp!!! $1.79 per BOTTLE!

I bought ONE.

Haven't sampled it yet.

It's chilling in the fridge now.

I just wonder if it will taste like the Coke I remember.

3. They have it at our Hy-Vee here
YUM! We bought it at Christmas for my husband's brothers and sisters as a reminder of when we were kids.

Now we buy 4-5 bottles a month as a treat - it's worth the extra $$ for the taste of 'real' Coca-Cola!

:bounce:

Enjoy!

My "guys" will be home then.

We'll all do a taste test.

I'll probably have them pick up some of the HFC so we can do a side-by-side.

I have been buying the Hispanic sodas, which are made with sugar. (And generally about 50 cents) But this is the first time I've seen Mexican Coke.

There's also a US soda company called Jone's Soda. Made with cane sugar, and it is really good.

It's sold in some grocery stores.

10. Nah
All we have to do is go visit my wife's grandmother. She lives in the town where they bottle it. Dublin, TX. You can get in all the stores around in central Texas.

13. That's right, you're not from Texas.
We can get Mexican Cokes and Dublin Dr. Peppers at convenience stores around here. You can taste the difference. It's not overwhelming, but it's clear. It's not just the taste, either, it's also the feel of it. Less slippery, less syrupy. You'll see.

18. It's the 12 oz narrow waisted glass bottle. Or 355 ml
It was in the Hispanic food section, the shelf tag said Mexican Coke, and the pasted on English lable listed sugar instead of HFC. The printed lable on the bottle is in Spanish.

The American Coke in comparison is syrupy.

You can taste the vanilla and cinnamon in the Mexi Coke.

23. High Fructose Corn Syrup
I've done a lot of research on High Fructose Corn Syrup. Many people especially children are found to be allergic to it. HFCS is man-made chemical and cannot break down in your body so it changes to fat. Probably why so many Americans are obese these days. HFCS is now in everything...salad dressing, BBQ sauce, etc. I always look at labels and reject anything HFCS. They use HFCS because it's cheaper than pure cane sugar. They will tell you there is no difference between HFCS and pure cane sugar...NOT True! Pure cane sugar may be bad for you, but HFCS is much worse and really really makes you FAT, my friend.

I always try to find Mexican Coke made with cane sugar. I also buy Jones sodas made with pure cane sugar and they're very good. They are found in several grocery stores. Comes in several flavors like Lemon drop, Strawberry Lime, Cream, Root beer, Blueberry, Apple Green, Bubble Gum, Crushed Melon, etc. but they haven't made "Cola" flavor. I wonder why. Maybe because Coca-Cola & Pepsi companies feel threatened by Jones Soda co. because so many people are wanting to stop using HFCS in their food & drink. I hope Jones Soda co. will make one in Cola flavor...made with pure sugar cane.

24. Another problem with HFCS...
...is that it doesn't trigger the "I've had enough sugar" reaction that limits our desire for sweet food -- meaning that we'll keep eating and eating dessert and snack items, far more so than if they had sugar in them, and never feeling really full.

27. Bad news about Jones Soda
(taken from the Wikipedia article about HFCS)

"As of March 2007, a 12 ounce bottle of Jones Pure Cane Soda Root Beer lists in its ingredients "inverted cane sugar", which seems to mean the same thing as inverted sugar syrup, which, like HFCS, is a mixture of fructose and glucose."

Apparently they've switched to something that's made up of the same stuff as HFCS.
:(

I went to Jones soda website and found their updated (breaking news) news dated August 23, 2007

Soda Warning?

High-fructose Corn Syrup Linked To Diabetes, New Study Suggests

Science Daily — Researchers have found new evidence that soft drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may contribute to the development of diabetes, particularly in children. In a laboratory study of commonly consumed carbonated beverages, the scientists found that drinks containing the syrup had high levels of reactive compounds that have been shown by others to have the potential to trigger cell and tissue damage that could cause the disease, which is at epidemic levels.

<snip>

Some researchers have suggested that high-fructose corn syrup may contribute to an increased risk of diabetes as well as obesity, a claim which the food industry disputes. Until now, little laboratory evidence has been available on the topic.

35. They seem to be basing their marketing on the Cane Sugar.
I and others am willing to pay more for it.

They wouldn't be doing themselves any favors if they cut corners on that.

36. I think coming up with a tasty Cola formula is tricky.
It's a combination of vanilla and cinnamon and other spices.

People also can get very partial to a certain "formula"

25. At our local yellow-Dollar Store
They have a whole isle of Mexican products (separate from the other food isles).

They have Nescafe' coffee (spanish label) on the Mexican isle, but not with other coffee products in the regular food isle.

I always buy the Nescafe because:

It costs less than the best regular item (Folgers)
It tastes better than Folgers
It comes in a GLASS jar that I can reuse (the Folgers is in plastic)

Couple of weeks ago when I went out there (I rarely eat from the truck) they had Mexican Cokes after a long absense. It was great, the real real thing. They also had Mexican 7Up. That I need to find in bulk for my 7&7s.

34. Oh GOD what I wouldn't GIVE to have a normal soft drink not laced with High Fucktose Corn Throw-up!!
Is it any wonder why I swore off ALL soft drinks at the beginning of 2006? They just don't TASTE the same anymore. That heavy, syrupy aftertaste of that substance is all you have on your pallatte when you drink Pepsi or Coke and it makes the drink, to quote Milo Bloom, taste "like malted battery acid".

The only thing I drink nowadays is water, juiced fruit and vegetables and Red Bull on weekends. Even Red Bull doesn't have HFCS in it.

But hey, that's Dumberica for you.
