I just got home from the hospital today |
|
Three days ago, I got very sick: I couldn't breathe, was gasping for air, and felt as if I were going to meet my maker. Wednesday, I went to the urgent care clinic to seek medical help. They couldn't help me there, so I get carted to the ER via free shuttle bus i got to the ER at about 8 PM.
It turned out I had a severe, life-threatening asthma attack, and I had to stay in the hospital for two days--actually a day and a half. It took 3 hours for asthma treatment to take place, and another 5 hours for a hospital bed. Needless to say, I was suffering. I was admitted at 4:00 in the morning, unable to sleep because of shortness of breath, my heart racing like an Indy car, and the discomfort of being unable to move.
I hate the hospital, but I liked this stay. I had to be talked into taking steroid anti-inflammatories to bring down the swelling in my lungs, because I'm well aware of the side effects: weight gain and my blood sugar going through the roof (I'm a type 2 diabetic). I was poked, stabbed with all sorts of needles--including one that went into my artery--and woken up at all hours to be given meds. But the food was good, the nurses were kind, and the priest was good. I'm Catholic, and my faith is important to me. I can thank God I even got to the hospital alive.

I read recently that there is "no such thing" as mild asthma... that most adults who die from complications of asthma have been diagnosed with "mild asthma" at one time in their lives and that treating even the "mild" cases is essential.
Good to know too!
glad you are better!

Sometimes people get pneumonia after a severe asthma attack (don't get enough oxygen way down in lungs and bacteria grows in the gunk) so keep your wits about you. Hoping you fee better soon.

9. I had to kick out all company so I could recover |

I am afraid somebody might come in and carry something which i can easily catch (I'm on prednisone for about 5 days, so my immunity is a bit compromised), including my soon-to-be-ex roommate.
I also watch my friend's (and soon-to-be roommate's) son, but I told him I was too sick to watch him, so his mom's friend picked him up last night. He stays with my while he's in school. I couldn't handle running around looking for him when he ran off out of my sight--he does have a tendency to sneak out of the house with my neighbor's son when I'm not looking.
I'm too sick and medded up to take care of anyone but myself, and my doctor prescribed rest for the weekend. I have to lie down for at least 4 hours at a time 4 times a day. So I'll have to hit the sofa for the morning.
