Ever eat sugar off the cane?
Edited on Fri Aug-31-07 05:34 PM by Taverner
When I was in Thailand, I became seriously addicted to eating raw sugar off the cane. There's nothing like it - think Crack in sugar form.

1. mmmm...sugar cane
when i was a kid, we'd freeze it and run around all day with a big ol' cane hunk hanging out of our pieholes.

2. I don't swallow the cane, just the juice...
and then spit out the cane after the juice is gone.

It really is good. And I love to be a part of cane-syrup making in the fall, too. A group of my dad's old friends get together every fall to press and cook the cane juice. Cane syrup is soooo yummy on hot, buttered homemade biscuits.

Oddly enough, also in Thailand. That was after feeding a big piece of cane to an elephant in the zoo. :hi:

6. I had sugarcane when I was eleven years old.
Edited on Fri Aug-31-07 05:58 PM by MysticalChicken
On a trip to Hawaii.

It's the only time I've ever eaten it. Not that I didn't like it--I thought it was great--but I haven't seen it in seventeen years. Now, however, I'm not sure if I would like it anymore, since I have something of an aversion to really sweet things.

That's the only time I've ever been to Hawaii, too. I'd like to go back.

8. All the time when I lived in the Ivory Coast!
It was awesome! The only thing I didn't care for were the strings - kind of like celery - that you had to spit out after you had chewed the sugar off.

How about fresh coconut? When I lived in IC, we went to the beach every Sunday. These little girls (9-10 yo) would come along selling sugar cane, pineapples and coconuts. Wielding machetes that would make any serial killer jealous, they would hatchet the top off of the coconut, let you drink the milk, then split it in half for you to eat the meat by scraping it off with your fingernails. Nothing better! I always hated coconut as a kid, because I only got the sugared kind used in baking, but this stuff was finger-licking good.

The pineapples were even better. They would slice off the bottom, then peel it like an apple and hand it you by the stem. You would eat it like an apple, not eating the core. Umm, umm!

9. I used to chew sugar cane when I was a child.
It's been a few years since I've tried a piece.
