My dog took a dump in the catbox.
She has been so discombobulated since our other dog had to be put to sleep earlier this week. When I came home there was the evidence, perched on the front edge of the catbox. Pretty weird, huh? I think she knows that Lily is not coming back - she's been subdued all week, not eating well, not sleeping as she normally does, etc. Animals are so interesting, aren't they?

1. Does she understand that her doggy friend died?
She's trying to copy what the cat does, making me wonder whether she's trying to act like the cat, so you'll keep her and not get rid of her, as you did Lily.
I know you didn't get rid of Lily but does the dog understand that?

3. I don't really know what she's doing, to be honest.
What's interesting to me is that Lily frequently spent 4-5 days at a time with the ex, but she always came back and Patsy never seemed to be too concerned. Lily's been gone for three days now, and I think Patsy senses that she will not be back this time.

13. Actually, that makes some sense. Dog logic.
When information is not available, dogs and kids will try to fill in the blanks themselves. They will usually figure they are somehow to blame when something bad happens.

Yep, your idea makes a lot of sense.

6. Thanks Maddy.
It was sad. DUers really came through, though. I got so many messages of support from some very nice people. We are a thoughtful group, aren't we?

8. My fur child gave me a hell of a scare yesterday
Totally lethargic, moping around - she didn't even make a move when I opened a pack of beef jerky. Then when I picked up her leash, she
just put her head on her paws and sighed. Normally she all but knocks me down in a mad dash for the door when I do that. Of course I freaked, and called the vet immediately and they worked her in this morning.

Problem was, by then she was acting totally fine, back to her normal playful self. But it's a damned good thing I brought her in: the vet found a honking huge tumor on the inside of her back leg - I never spotted the thing 'cause of where it was located, plus she's part Tibetan terrier, and it was covered with long fur. May be nothing, but could be really bad. They ran a lot of expensive tests. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Odd how they'll let you know that something just isn't right.

12. for your fur baby
May God, who heals the sick, defends the vulnerable, cares for the poor, and liberates all creation from suffering and injustice, bring us all to that peaceable kingdom when all creatures shall live in harmony and all suffering shall be transformed into joy. Amen.

Dear God, protect and bless all beings that breathe, keep all evil from them, and let them sleep in peace. Amen.

11. Give your gal a hug and tell her that was a very nice poop and if she needs

too poop in the catbox to deal with it, then its okay. Losing a furry friend is the roughest thing. We just lost our fluffy old girl last month and we are still a mess. My heart goes out to all of you, really.

14. I'm sorry you had to put your dog down....
And that your dog is sad. I hope everything gets better for you.

I wish my dog would go in a litter box, though. We caught mine eating one of her turds this evening. Apparently she had gone behind the chair and we hadn't noticed it, as it was out of sight. My god, dogs are weird.

15. I think they know they've done something undesireable
And are trying to get rid of the evidence in the only way they can. Dogs' emotions are so transparent. I think that's why I like them so much. They may try to lie, but they're so bad at it they rarely succeed.

My cat, on the other hand, lies like a bandit. And usually gets away with it until I find incontrovertible evidence.
