1. This will make you feel better.
My friend just moved from here to Chicago. She's a hoarder. It took eight packers four full days and two trucks to pack up her crap.

The house is about 3000 square feet, so we're not talking Aaron Spelling here.

See? I knew you would feel better.

2. ha, yeah, that would suck
not a hoarder

and it's more the situation than the packing, but i hate the packing too and the moving...

thanks

13. I could throw everything I own in the back of a van in 60 minutes or less
After a few moves which were chronologically close together, I started living light.

14. I can appreciate that mode of thinking...
I'm on a 20 year accumulation of stuff, and packing is hard as it involves figuring out what is "mine", and getting to the point that I don't care if it is or not.

Just need to get shit out

19. I couldn't get all of BabyMidlo's stuffed animals in my van in
60 minutes or less. Pre-kids, I didn't have a lot, but since my mom and dad died, I inherited a lot of stuff from them that I want to someday pass on to the kids.

Just the day to day accumulation drives me crazy sometimes, especially once school starts again. Papers. Papers. More papers.

And, your brother is hot. Not as hot as you, but hot nonetheless.

4. it is a pain, but a great way to go through all the crap
and get rid of all the stuff you haven't used in years

I kid you not, we had boxes in the garage in PHX that we had moved from Cali 9 years prior that had never been opened!

we took 5 trailer loads to the dump and managed to get our entire life into a 26' Uhaul....

in fact, I'd walk away from a lot of this stuff, and am trashing a lot as I go.

6. Thinning down is awesome and so freeing.
I don't even have a real 'storage' place in my house anymore. When we finished the attic, one room was to be a storage room, but my son had to move into it when my FIL moved in and took his room.

Enter the dumpster in the driveway. So freeing to get rid of all that junk that just clutters up your life. And Goodwill made out like bandits as well.

Flylady.net is great for folks who have a clutter issue and one thing I read there years ago has stayed with me. If you have an object that doesn't bring you joy as you look at it, dust it, whatever, but insteads brings you down, get rid of it.

I loved that advice and have lived by it ever since. I don't buy anything unless I absolutely love it and will treasure it and it makes straightening up and cleaning far less of a chore.

40. During my split
Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 07:39 PM by krispos42
The ex fled to neighboring Minnesota with the kid. We weren't sure what her parents (may they burn in Hell) were going to do next. They were/are fundies and had already made two attempts to either keep us from moving, one involving false accusations of child neglect.

She had to leave very fast, 6am Saturday morning.

That left me with the job of packing up the entire house and moving it into a U-Haul.

In the middle of July.

And I had a raging summer cold with a fever.

THAT was how we fled South Dakota. And during the packing, I had to spend 4 hours in jail. Her parents saw the moving truck and called the police on the only thing they could call me on: a two-year-old warrant for a bounced $21 check.

The police thought it was so ridiculous that one of the officers went to the ATM for me to get my bond money!

At least there weren't any stairs involved.

47. Well, it get's worse
My ex apparently has 'forgiven' them, and Sam (our son) visits on a regular basis. In fact, he's out there now for the SD State Fair.

These same ex-in-laws that tried to get her declared mentally incompetent after she had an affair and decided she wanted to divorce me.

So, her parents should have been my natural ally in trying to keep things together. After all, I was in love (still) and we had just brought a baby into the world 9 months ago.

Instead... well, instead I have what I shall only refer to as "black thoughts" about them.

I think the fever was a blessing in disguise because it made me so miserable I just didn't care and didn't worry about stuff, I just did it. Couches, beds, tables, chairs, boxes... all into the truck. No thinking, and I don't remember it particulary well.

Thanks for the hugs. I've been doing pretty well the last year or so.

<sigh>

We just moved after 7 years in the same house.
Downsized to a house about half the size. It hasn't been pretty.
We've sold stuff, thriftshopped stuff and dumped stuff at the dump....
and I STILL have stuff to go through.
