3. Just look at that line up
I saw some of these bands at a 20 year Woodstock reunion - it was a two day festival and we were there on the first day. That day was reserved for bands that weren't at Woodstock :-). Blue Cheer was great.....

Oh, and just taxi up the driveway as usual :-).

19. we got to the DeYoung Museum parking lot
at almost 8 and walked over to the meadow. the dance area near the stage was just starting to get populated, so we got next to the platform where one of the video cameras was placed, just about at the front of the barricade.

our main bands to see were Dan Hicks, and the Charlatans, and then we beat feet and split the scene during the Manzarek/McClure poetry rap. it was getting pretty dense down front. we got home in time to see Starship's set on the live web feed.

i remember watching in 1997, as best as possible on the live web feed of its day, the 30th Anniversary SOL, from my then-apt in Houston, when i was in the process of finagling a corporate transfer to the Bay Area. i wonder if any of you guys on this thread went to that one... if so, how was it compared to yesterday's event? (i also remember that John Denver died that day, running out of fuel in his styrofoam lightweight plane on Monterey Bay... and that there was no war or Bu$hies to be currently enraged at... a bit kinder, gentler time...)

the last event of this sort that i went to was the Gathering of the Tribes back in 2005 for Chet Helms' memorial. A lot of the same cast of characters, a wonderful day, not quite as intense and crowded as yesterday's event was.

DH got some shots of the Charlatans, which was when i ran out of power, so i'll get some of those posted later. there is a wonderful shot in today's SF Chronicle (and a pretty nice article about the day, too) of Mike Wilhelm, George Hunter and Richard Olsen from the Charlatans:

25. I don't know-I hope this works. SF from concert to ocean.
I don't like crowds, but love music. I did make it through the crowd, but didn't stay too long-too many people for this scaredy-cat.

Hope ya like our happy California bison.

Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 10:00 PM by Blue_In_AK
I'd give anything to be there. I didn't make it to SF until 1969 after all the hippies had become speed freaks. We still had a good time, however.

I will be down there the end of October, though, hopefully for a UFPJ march that's allegedly in the works. It'll be just like old times. :hippie:

11. We have one night (Oct. 27) at the Nob Hill Hotel
Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 11:36 PM by Blue_In_AK
up on Hyde Street, then we've got to go over to Oakland for a night, then we'll be staying at the Hotel Beresford on Sutter Street Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. After that we go down to Santa Monica for my daughter's wedding, which is Nov. 2. We'll head back north on Sunday, spending the night in Carmel, and then back to the City for one more night, probably close to the airport since we come back to AK early Tuesday morning. I'm really looking foward to the trip and taking LOTS of pictures.

I'm especially hoping that the march takes place as planned. The UFPJ website says 10 regional rallies that day (details to follow). I can't imagine they wouldn't be doing one in SF. We were planning on marching with my best old hippie friend with whom I just reconnected a couple of years ago after not seeing her for 30 years. We used to march in SF back in '69-'70, so it'll be just like the old days if we can do it again.

13. Congrats on the upcoming family wedding!
I remember pics you've shared re: your reconnect with best friend. Have recently reconnected with close friends from over 30 years ago, and it's like even though apart, we were always connected.

You will be busy, busy, busy!

Hope you do get to march! Hope the coastal weather is good for you when you come. I love the bay area, and especially Carmel/Monterey Penisula.

Am sure you'll get plenty of awesome shots. :hi:

17. Yeah, it's going to be great!
I'll always have a soft place in my heart for the Bay Area. The years I spent there, 1969 to 1975, were some of the best years of my life...what I remember anyway. :)

27. Most of the good bands peaked by '66 anyway.
By the time '67 rolled around, it was getting too mainstream anyway. You could buy hippie gear at Macy's and lovebeads at Woolworth's.
