Movies with most sustained "dreamlike" atmospheres? |
|
Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 05:31 PM by darkstar
Doesn't have to be built upon multiple dream sequences, per se. Just sustained hypnotic, other world atmosphere.
I haven't been sleeping so well, so I've found I enjoy dozing off to images that wash over me with sound kind of low. Movies include Inland Empire, Last Year at Marienbad, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, 2001, Versuchka(has anyone seen this?).
I guess by definition lots of the titles will be arty/experimental, but that doesn't have to be the case. As above, some art-leaning horror movies are fairly good at this, but then have jarring sections (Suspiria) that defeat my purpose (and it is all about me, you know....)
Anyone else like to fall asleep like this?

I almost put it in the other night. But unlike Inland Empire's empty rooms, there's kind of a claustrophobic intensity to that one for me personally.
But you are in the zone. Thanks.

7. Netfilx has it under "I Am Cuba" |
|
http://www.netflix.com/Movie/24092535?trkid=73The film is in English, Spanish and Russian simultaneously but that doesn't interfere. The stories are mostly told through visuals anyway. It's famous for its cinematography.

3. Jean Cocteau's "Orpheus" ("L'Orphée) |
|
or "Beauty and the Beast" (not the Disney version).
Both very dream-like.

Orpheous does fit the bill. Is Beauty the one by, hmmm, Renoir or something>
Plus, Orpheus reminded me of another: Wild Strawberries. Depressing, as I recall, but kind of the mood I'm thinking of...

37. "Beauty" is Cocteau as well. His "Testament of Orpheus" and "Blood of a poet" also quite dreamlike. |
|
Powaqatsi is more sedate than Koyaanisqatsi, including Glass' soundtrack. Very beautiful. Baraka is even more humanistic, and won't send you off troubled...

I wear headphones to bed, usually falling asleep to a good audiobook. Last night's adventure was Tolkein's Silmarillion.

Almost anything by Lynch really.
Waking Life Takashi Miike's segment "Box" from the anthology film Three Extremes Stay Eyes Wide Shut Caché Element Of Crime
I could probably think of tonnes more, but I think that's enough.

Maybe some day it'll be on IFC again. That's where I saw it first.

...from Ayn Rand's novel...whatever you think of her or "Objectivism", this movie sustains an atmosphere of a world resembling ours, fascinating--but not quite real...ending with Gary Cooper astride a skyscraper, challenging the clouds. Very bizarre film, and yes, quite "dreamlike"...
