Dirk Pitt? Not Matthew McConaughey!
Well, Clive Cussler finally decided to take the plunge into the silver screen again, swearing after that awful Raise the Titanic abortion, that he would be personally involved in any future films of his adventures. Sahara is filming, and I think they already have the cast wrong. I mean...that twerp Steve Zahn as Al Giordino? What were they thinking? Rumor has it that Cussler is angry at the script rewrites, and has sued to keep any further films from being made...Sahara, apparently was to be the first in a 5 picture series.

Here's a bit about it...

1. I always envisioned Tom Selleck as Dirk Pitt.
Matthew McConaughey is a slightly better choice as Dirk Pitt than say, Danny DeVito. But not by much.

And Steve Zahn as Al Giordino is just about the most idiotic casting I've ever heard.

One Dirk Pitt novel I would have loved to see as a film "Deep Six", my favorite.

5. Cussler wanted Hugh Jackman to play him.
I don't know how those steel talons coming out of his hands will play with the fans though.

I always though Dylan McDermott (from The Practice) would be good...he's got green eyes, so contacts wouldn't be necessary.

2. What is a "Dirk Pitt"?
I thought the name was a joke, but it seems you're serious.

4. The recurring hero in Clive Cussler's 17 adventure novels.
....Beginning with Mediterranean Caper and (by page 300) looks to be close to the end with Trojan Odyssey.

Think of James Bond, mixed with a little Indiana Jones, a bit of Jack Ryan, and the humor of Fox Mulder thrown in for good measure.

He's 6'2", has dark brown hair, opaline green eyes, and a smile that melts women. Yes, the books are formula, but they are are fun reads.

3. Dirk Pitt is only the coolest pop fiction literary hero ever!
Well, perhaps that title goes to Robert Jordan of "For Whom the Bell Tolls". I'm really excited that they'll be making some movies of Clive Cussler's books. Sahara is one of my favorites (I have a signed copy of that and "Inca Gold"). About Danny DeVito, I always thought that Gordino would look kinda like him but with more hair. I don't know... whoever they pick will be ok with me as long as they follow the books.
