a couple of weeks back, one of my dining companions ate a pepper by mistake - the owner stopped her when she reached for her glass - No No - eat some plain rice!!
It worked quite quickly.
I don't know about long after the fact, though.

That would make a great signature line or a song lyric :-)
Glad all's well!
Yogurt, especially cucumber yogurt, is also a quick cure.

They have the best chicken sandwich anywhere! Even the bun is different than the standard fast food bun. And you can get the chicken mild instead of spicy.
And my answer to your original question is: bread.

Dylan Thomas had a (rather odd) poem titled "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" which included the line "Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
:D
ETA: Conflated the poem title and the actual line. Whoops.

seriously - acid counteracts the burn (ever hear of vinegar for sunburn?) the lemon or lime in a margarita is acidic. this is assuming it's a real margarita made with real juice, not some slushy teen drink out of a machine.

and the pain in my mouth is quickly forgotten.
But, the safest route is bread, milk, cream, ice cream, yogurt, any kind of nut butter (peanut, cashew, sesame, etc.).
The capsaicin will also go into solution in alcohol, so use the highest proof non-sweet you have: vodka, 151 Rum, gin, or preferably everclear. And don't drink it - let it go into the mouth, then spit it out.

but the most embarrassing part is when it makes your nose run! That seems to happen to me when I eat spicy kinds of Mexican food. But I remember eating bread to remove the spiciness of some Indian food once, and I'm sure the other recommendations on this thread are good as well. (Of course, since you've already been relieved of the burning, it's all moot anyway!)

|
I just don't have a very high tolerance for spice, I'm afraid. I can only go to Indian or Mexican restaurants "supervised", i.e., with people I trust to help me order food that is not going to make me crazy. But I've worked with some Indian men who long ago burned off their taste buds and kept pouring on more seasonings. It almost hurt to watch.

Cajun food doesn't tend to bother me (or maybe I've just become more used to it than I would otherwise, growing up on the outskirts of "Cajun country") but most Indian food that I've had kills me. I still eat it from time to time because I love the taste of it, but the amount of burn my tongue feels everytime I eat it (and the way it messes with my stomach a bit as well) are probably signs I should avoid it altogether!

You know the old saying, water and oil don't mix? Well, they don't. All drinking water does is transport the burning capsaicin oils to uninjured parts of the mouth.
Milk, yogurt or sour cream is the ticket.

Eat fatty foods and salt. They will eliminate the pain.
I lived in Thailand for 3 years and ate food that would send most of you guys into a coma.

38. I think the traditional thing to do is drink milk and eat bread, especially "dense" bread. |
|
I've heard that yogurt also works.
Water is a no-no, especially with the really, truly, honestly spicy stuff.
I personally don't care to have a five-alarm explosion in my mouth, but one of my friends is a junkie for spicy stuff--the real spice, not the faux-spice you usually find in Maine--and I think that's what she does once she's sick of the burn.

At our local Indian restaurant, the wife of the owner has been testing me with various chili peppers. She keeps upping the heat ante and I'm doing pretty well. She brought out a couple of tiny green ones but I could only eat one of them. Lord. I love the burn, though.
Milk, yoghurt, sour cream - they all work for me.
