Aint no GLakes boots in my company
HR just closed us down for 5 inches of snow. HR guy did boot camp in San Diego. Guess he does not know the cold of standing at attention a 4 am on the shores of Lake Michigan in the middle of January.

Sheesh.

1. Can we go home, too?
I mean, sunny skies and temperatures around 60? I should be outside instead of chained to my desk! x(

2. What a wimp!!

I went to boot at Great Lakes in February/March/April of '75. I remember the first morning when they opened all the windows and tossed an empty trash can down the middle of the barracks. Talk about rude awakenings.

I know what it's like to be woke up at 2AM for "Snow Duty".

(Pssst...don't tell anyone, but I was in one of those "Special Ceremonial" companies that had it easy. No laundry or KP duty. Hahahahahahah!!!)

4. Yup! A nice Febuary, 1972 day in Denver, I wore jeans, tee-shirt
and a light jacket. Everybody who joined in Denver went to San Diego for boot camp. That was a given. I had not lowered my right hand all the way and some chief comes up, "you, you, and you...Great Lakes."

It was three days before they issued clothes, but damnit we got haircuts that night.

I enjoyed watching the boys from the south volunteering for "snow watch".

6. San Diego in February
was quite lovely. Not a drop of rain throughout boot. Then it was off to sub school in CT. Very nice there in the springtime.

7. recruiter botched it
My recruiter, who was a nice guy but dumb as a box of hair, PROMISED me I was on my way to Orlando (from Jacksonville, FL) for boot. I showed up in a long-sleeved t-shirt and jeans. We ended up at GL at the end of January, 1993. Some overzealous ATD guys tried to pull a Full Metal Jacket routine on us and got screamed at for making us stand outside w/o coats at 2AM.
My CC called that flag "the big chicken". It cracked me up every time he said it.

9. And on the other extreme...
Ah, good ole' Great Mistakes. I still have my Ricky Recruit stationery folder. Attended the summer of 1986. I recall it being very hot, so hot that we did a lot of stuff indoors because the CC's thought some of us would die due to heat stroke.

You know what I loved about Great Lakes? When the Chaplain gave us all a rah-rah speech and then told us to stop thinking about our wives/girlfriends because they were "fucking" our best friend. Yes, the Chaplain said this, and yes, he used the word "fucking."

He must have been ordained by the Universal Life Church.

Just like me!
