In past centuries, statues and monuments were built to honor heroes, leaders, kings, presidents, mayors, athletes, etc. Today, rather than do that, we pick some dilapidated section of interstate and put up a green sign informing the driver that they are on the "Martin Luther King Highway," or the "45th Infantry Highway." I see these as insults and no honor at all. Its a piece of frickin concrete and does nothing to encourage thoughtful consideration of the meaning of the namee.

2. oh jeez, DFW/Metroplex may be the grand champion of this
we have the LBJ freeway, the Jim Wright Freeway, the George Bush (poppy) freeway, MLK Boulevard in both cities, Stemmons Freeway, Julius Shepps Freeway, Walton/Walker, and most likely others I can't remember right now.

Nashville has the Briley Parkway, Louisville has the Watterson Expressway, Memphis has Danny Thomas Boulevard, Elvis Presley Boulevard, MLK (obligatory)Boulevard

Chicago has an Eisenhower, JFK, Daley that I know of

4. I live near a section of highway named for Junior Johnson
Which I find very amusing considering the fact that he's only famous for driving at speeds too fast for highways.

5. I-35 in the Cities is named after a state trooper
In Minnesota.

And there was a big bridge in Connecticut, part of I-95, that was named in honor of the 101st Airborne Division. I think it crossed the Thames River.

8. The John Lewis Memorial Highway
in my area...named for the founder of Staunton (I think - I'm a bit rusty on my history, but he was an early settler).

We also have memorial bridges named for the three Marines from our area who were killed in action in Iraq. :( I had to drive over two of them for work this summer...thank God I didn't have to drive over the third one, as that is the one dedicated to my friend from high school. It made me really sad to drive over the other two bridges, but I really don't think I could've driven over Danny's - to me it would be like stepping on his grave, I think.

9. My point, poignantly made.
It is no honor to have semis drive over you. If we had parks any more, we could put statues in them. but all we have are parking lots. Shit.

10. We have a stretch
that's the Pearl Harbor Memorial Hwy nearby hear in a little dinky, but growing, town just south of Tulsa. This is the same town that just had to purchase a twisted girder from the WTC after 9/11 and build a monument with it on top and put it in a park. Don't understand the connection this place has to either event.

12. I can hear the dedication....
"...and let all who drive over these hallowed squares of cement, recall the good humor of the gipper, who if he were able to drive, would come to Cincinatti, a town he loved, and spend time on this stretch of interstate, just as thousands do each day, and while we are stopped in gridlock I know I speak for all Ohioans, that it will be much more an uplifting time as we shroud ourselves in the aura and goodness of that great Illinoisan/californian...."

It's a 50-mile section of I-95 from the northern Baltimore City line to Delaware.

We also have Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Wilmington.

15. Ronald Reagan
I-25 in El Paso County (Colorado Springs) is the "Ronald Reagan Highway". There are usually some flowers propped against the sign at the county line. One time I noticed some people taking a picture with it, but then I saw that they were from out of state and had a Kucinich sticker on their car. Maybe they were mooning it, I don't know.

South of us in reliably Democratic Pueblo County, I-25 is the John F. Kennedy Highway.

Olson was Minnesota's Socialist-leaning governor in the 1930s. He was very popular but died of cancer at age 44.
