What's everyone's favorite H.P. Lovecraft story?
"Pickman's Model," the Herbert West series, and "The Haunter of the Dark" are my top three...with "The Whisperer in Darkness" and "The Dunwich Horror" coming in as runners-up.

1. I can't really pick one.
But I do enjoy his tales.

2. I liked the all.
I wished more people knew about his stories.

If you like King you will like Lovecraft.

3. The Thing on the Doorstep
I once actually told that story with myself and a couple of friends in the places of the main characters to a few classmates of mine at an overnight school event around a campfire, and some of them believed that I had a friend who had a girlfriend who was trying to possess his mind, and that I later killed him in an insane asylum.

They weren't too bright.

6. Yep, that's some impressive stupidity.
Although a campfire party with Lovecraft stories might not be a bad idea for Halloween.

4. There's an excellent adaptation of "The Call of Cthulhu" available on DVD...
It's a silent film, just recently made, but very excellent. About 40 minutes long. It was shown at a few film festivals, I believe.

It's been so long since I've read any of his stuff that I couldn't pick a favorite story, though...

5. "The Outsider". It's an amazing story.
Loneliness, despair, self-loathing, rage, a desire to be loved, and a dreamy surrealism punctuate this chilling story. Never get tired of it.

7. "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath"
I love, love, love his long, rich, surreal stuff.

And of course "The Colour Out of Space." :scared:

8. That was the first of his stories that I read.
I was out the country, attic bedroom, dark as hell outside.

I heard every sound, wouldn't get me outside after dark.:scared:

10. "At the Mountains of Madness" wasn't his best, but it...
was the first one I read and I have a special fondness for its marvelous creepiness.

21. AtMoM is the best...
...being a long one, and wall-to-wall creepy. It's also less dated than most of his other work, with the Antarctic still being so mysterious.

11. The Colour Out of Space
A haunting tale of fear, helplessness, isolation, and madness and decay told in the poetic beauty that only Lovecraft is capable of.

16. Another vote for "Colour Out of Space"
Scared the fertilizer out of me as a teenager.

BTW, I had Zazzle make me a bumper-sticker that says "Go Miskatonic University: Fighting Cephalopods!", and put it on my car. I get a lot of puzzled looks, but more than a few laughs as well.

Just in case there were any other HP Lovecraft fans around. You can always change the font and colors.

20. "The Whisperer in Darkness" - only story EVER to creep me out
I remember reading it as a teen in the basement (where my bedroom was) and getting goosebumps.

I still remember myself to this day reading that (got it from the main library, a favorite haunt of mine) story and then as I laid down to sleep turning it over and over in my mind.

I am 41 now, and no story has ever left a more deep impression on me.

I think it could be re-written for today's times a little better, but I saw it for what it was for it's time. HP was ahead of his time.
