What's everyone's favorite H.P. Lovecraft story? |
|
"Pickman's Model," the Herbert West series, and "The Haunter of the Dark" are my top three...with "The Whisperer in Darkness" and "The Dunwich Horror" coming in as runners-up. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:H._P._Lovecraft#Novels_and_Short_Stories

I wished more people knew about his stories.
If you like King you will like Lovecraft.

3. The Thing on the Doorstep |
|
I once actually told that story with myself and a couple of friends in the places of the main characters to a few classmates of mine at an overnight school event around a campfire, and some of them believed that I had a friend who had a girlfriend who was trying to possess his mind, and that I later killed him in an insane asylum.
They weren't too bright.

6. Yep, that's some impressive stupidity. |
|
Although a campfire party with Lovecraft stories might not be a bad idea for Halloween.

4. There's an excellent adaptation of "The Call of Cthulhu" available on DVD... |
|
It's a silent film, just recently made, but very excellent. About 40 minutes long. It was shown at a few film festivals, I believe.
It's been so long since I've read any of his stuff that I couldn't pick a favorite story, though...

5. "The Outsider". It's an amazing story. |
|
Loneliness, despair, self-loathing, rage, a desire to be loved, and a dreamy surrealism punctuate this chilling story. Never get tired of it.

I was out the country, attic bedroom, dark as hell outside.
I heard every sound, wouldn't get me outside after dark.:scared:

...being a long one, and wall-to-wall creepy. It's also less dated than most of his other work, with the Antarctic still being so mysterious.

A haunting tale of fear, helplessness, isolation, and madness and decay told in the poetic beauty that only Lovecraft is capable of.

Scared the fertilizer out of me as a teenager.
BTW, I had Zazzle make me a bumper-sticker that says "Go Miskatonic University: Fighting Cephalopods!", and put it on my car. I get a lot of puzzled looks, but more than a few laughs as well.

20. "The Whisperer in Darkness" - only story EVER to creep me out |
|
I remember reading it as a teen in the basement (where my bedroom was) and getting goosebumps.
I still remember myself to this day reading that (got it from the main library, a favorite haunt of mine) story and then as I laid down to sleep turning it over and over in my mind.
I am 41 now, and no story has ever left a more deep impression on me.
I think it could be re-written for today's times a little better, but I saw it for what it was for it's time. HP was ahead of his time.
