Lawrence Richard Walters, nicknamed Lawnchair Larry or the Lawn Chair Pilot, (April 19, 1949 – October 6, 1993) was an American adventurer. He took flight on July 2, 1982 in a homemade aircraft, dubbed Inspiration I, that he had fashioned out of a Sears patio chair and 45 helium-filled weather balloons. He rose to an altitude of 16,000 feet (3 miles) and floated from his point of origin in San Pedro, California into federal airspace near Long Beach airport. The account of his flight was widely reported in newspapers. The feat is noted as an urban legend, albeit one based on actual events.

18. Another balloon story almost forgotten...

Back in the early sixties (before hot air balloons became the rage), an adventurer designed and built a balloon with a boson's chair arrangement for him to sit. Dozens of people were needed to hold the balloon down until it was fully inflated and released. My buddy, then 13, was part of the crowd holding the tethers until it was released. Unfortunately my buddy had managed to wrap the line around his hand a couple of times in order gain a firmer purchase, and the balloon was launched before he could free his hand from his line. He took off with the balloon, and traveled across the San Francisco bay, dangling by one hand, before the pilot was able to land. True story.

11. Helium Balloons

One day my ex-lover and I were eating at a restaurant that was giving balloons away to the kids. We went up front to pay the bill and I went outside to smoke a cigarette. My ex told the hostess, "You see that guy out there? He really wants a balloon but he was too embarrassed to ask for one. Do you think we can get one?" Of course, the hostess gave my ex a balloon and he brought it out to me. I was very happy to get it. LOL
