Prog Rock fans check-in!!!
Edited on Tue Sep-04-07 10:18 AM by LynneSin
Just want our voices to be heard since I was dissed about the lack of prog rock bands in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This would include such greats as Yes, Moody Blues, King Crimson and Rush.

Join me in our outrage!

Edit Note: Genesis isn't in there either although I think they sold out Prog Rock after Gabriel Split

1. and early Genesis... Pink Floyd
count me in.

I don't know much about Prog beyond these groups mentioned here, but I like a lot of what's mentioned here.

The Moodies and Yes would be my favorites in this genre.

3. My take on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
To me, it sort of invalidates the idea of rock and roll anyway to have a "hall of fame" - rock and roll is supposed to be about breaking rules and being out of the mainstream - back before it became the language of capitalism, it was the language of rebellion and I prefer to think of it that way.

To have a hall of fame has always seemed lame to me. I would rather proudly feel that I was too way out to be in such a thing if I was a rocker myself.

4. Yeah, prog gets no respect!
Not that the RnR hall of fame means much, anyway... but lots of great bands are being overlooked because their music was not radio friendly.

5. Yeah, Genesis went pop after Gabriel left.
I'll add some love for Marillion. Not cause I think they should be in the HoF, but just cause I love them. :)

6. Count me in!!
I disagree with you on Genesis, though - I think they stayed prog rock for a few albums, lost it with Duke and Abacab (though those are still good ones), brought it back with "Mama" just to get our hopes up that they were going to be making music again (although "Illegal Alien" was enough of a hint of what was actually coming next we should have seen it...), and then pulled the rug out and cashed in and sold their souls with everything after.

Those first few albums after Gabriel are still damned good prog rock music.

12. Those later albums may not be prog, but they're damn good pop music.
Way better than a lot of the other stuff being released at the same time.

But it's still no better than spraying mint-scent on cow shit. Yeah it smells better, but it's still cow shit.

33. Yeah, they played here in June.
I think this new album is one of the best they've put out in years.

I had front row center tickets to the 30 year tour. No joke, it was one of the highlight experiences of my lifetime.

That douchebag Bon Jovi will probably get in before them.

15. Most rock music I like is Prog Rock
or now alternative.

I certainly am a Yes fan! Early Genesis of course Peter Gabriel. Brian Eno, Roxy Music. I don't know about the Moody Blues; I think they may have invented their own genre. B-)

21. I was suprised at the various sub categories of prog rock
http://www.progarchives.com/

Moody Blues - Cross-over Prog (although i'd consider it more of a symphonic prog)
Rush - Heavy Prog
Yes - Symphonic Prog
Pink Floyd - Psychedelic/Space Rock
Electric Light Orchestra - Prog Related
King Crimson - Eclectic Prog

It's amazing to realize it's more than just prog rock. That's a great review site. They have all the obscure stuff too

16. Yes, Genesis, ELP, The Moody Blues, Rush and King Crimson should ALL be in there.
It's an absolute crime that they aren't.

I mean, can someone tell me why The Ronnettes, Blondie, The Sex Pistols, Brenda Lee and the fooking BEE GEES are in the HOF before any of the groups mentioned above? Hey, I'm a fan of "Run To Me", "Be My Baby", "God Save the Queen" and "Dreaming" as much as the next musically-inclined snob, but is it REALLY HOF material?

Yes, ELP and the Moodies ignited one of the most critically maligned and steadfastly un-mainstream genres ever (alongside metal). What's not "RAWK" about that?

I've been recently acquiring surround sound mixes of classic albums such as Days of Future Passed, Fragile, and Brian Salad Surgery. They are simply amazing and a great way to hear this music.

and not that the HOF had much credibility, but the moment they let a rapper in that was the final straw.

19. Present
I think I love all the English Bands. I never thought of them as progressive but just rock bands. Genesis is my favorite, no matter who is singing but I also love all the other bands listed. ELP Brain Salad Surgery was played by me on an almost daily basis back in my H.S. days.
Didn't Yes's Roundabout kick the first time you heard that song?

Nothing on radio like the Moody Blues or Pink Floyd these days. Makes me feel sad for the kids of today.

22. Here, of course - I don't carry that avatar for nothing
And I'll stand up for Genesis up to and including 'Duke' - "Duke's Travels" would be a highlight on any album, with or without Gabriel. Tony Banks's 1st solo album "A Curious Feeling" is good too, from around the same time, though his solo stuff did go downhill after that (as did Genesis). And Hackett's solo work is good too (a bit patchy, sometimes).

Of the more recent prog bands, they are my favorite.

On edit: I'll go on record as saying that Gavin Harrison is (((GASP))) better than Neil Peart.

34. Don't Forget ELP
And Rennaisance. There was a very good Italian prog rock band called PFM that i liked back in the day, too.

And a very obscure band from England called IF. Sort of Yes meets Wendy Carlos.

All the rest of your list is just fine by me. (Except maybe the Moodies. Never really flipped my whistle.)
