What a terrible day
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 06:34 PM by HEyHEY
THere was a bunch ofmistakes in the paper...unfortunatley all of them were my fault. One was pretty major because the information accidentally came from an outdated press release.

My editor was huffy all morning. But I'm going to take issue with him on some of the things he said tomorrow. Some of it was Bullshit, and I intend to clear that up with him. As for the mistakes, I am not using it as an excuse, but when you give a reporter one day to research, write and layout 4 sports pages, that's what's bound to happen.

ugh.

One bonus was a lady called up to complement and thank me on my editorial column

2. When I was still working at the restaurant
...my chef told me he'd rather I screw up really big all at once, than screw up small lots of times.

Of course, being the nice guy I was, I obliged. ;)

Chin up!

4. we all screw up
On a reading assignment I handed out today I told the students to read 344-322. LOL. What were they supposed to do, read backwards?

5. I feel for you...
Wait until you get to a daily and the caller is going to call "Montel" right after he gives you the scoop, so you can have it first.

And then he calls back and tells you that Montel is right now filming the kidnapping of his ex-wife's girlfriend's niece's dog ( custody dispute) and do you want to be there too?

And you do and you run the story, and you enter the biggest Hatfield and McCoy fight ever with both sides threatening to get you fired and "clean your clock."

True story.

6. Yeah I think you told me that one
it rings a bell.

Should I tell my editor I think some of what he said was BS or let it ride.

The thing is, he said to me, "See this is why I don't like leaving things to the last minute, this should have been done friday."

The only reason it wasn't done Friday is becaue HE told me not too.
It seems he's a bit of a projectionist. What do you think?

7. It seems like they expect
an awful lot from you. Are they short-staffed? What happened to the last person in your position? Do you have anyone who proofreads the pages when you're through with them?

BTW, congrats on the compliment. Perhaps you have a fan. ;-) What was the editorial about?

8. Big box superstores
And how they SUCK ASS!

I think they do expect a bit too much from, I've only been here a month and they haven't even really shown me how to do things, then when they aren't done the piss and moan about it. My editor spends most of his time ice fishing. And the other reporter is very un-reliable. Last night I asked him where a meeting was and he told me the wrong place. Then in the morning I get bitched at like it's my fault, which it partially is. But I just assumed the other guy would KNOW seeing as how he the one that told me about it.

Don't get me wrong, I like my job and the staff, my editor is a good guy, it's just that today was a bit much.

10. My advice would be to analyze
the processes and eliminate the places where problems can occur. Obviously, you can't count on these people, so figure out how you can handle it yourself.

Why not call around and develop you own civic meeting calendar, complete with locations? Figure out how to get your pages done earlier so you can set them aside and analyze them with a fresh mind.

If you don't know how to do something, ASK! And have them go through it until you understand. They'll cut you some slack when you're the new guy, but if you don't get your questions answered now, you'll look pretty foolish later.

Hope you can resolve these issues and have a better day tomorrow. BTW, how cold is it today?

9. I work for a newspaper, too
Mistakes are a bummer, I know. I feel your pain! Considering how much we have to proof, It's amazing there aren't more.
