I just received a notice from Bank of America saying "At your request, we have placed a stop payment on the check below". The check number is about a thousand numbers higher than the last check I wrote. The payee is ACH, which is a third party electronic funds transferer. The amount is more than I've ever written a check for, in fact more than I've ever had in my checking account. I called the bank and had them undo the stop payment, and they couldn't really tell me how a stop payment could be initiated without my knowledge. Should I be nervous?

It IS an official bank mailing, the number checked out (I googled it before I called) and the bank DID have a record of the stop payment being requested. It's just that I wasn't the one who requested it!

4. You probably want that stop payment in place, then. |
|
Seems someone is tinkering with your account. They should have the requesting info on the stop payment, and you're going to want that as well. Right now, go check all your records and make sure your money is where it should be.

3. Did you tell them this was a check you hadn't written? |
|
It sounds like some sort of scam to me. Did you explain it to the bank exactly as you did here? Because they should be able to tell you if its a scam.

5. If the check to ACH is for more than you've ever had in your account, |
|
why would you undo the stop payment?

BUT go to their website and call them on the customer service number listed on the website--NOT whatever number is listed in the letter.
I got a fake letter from BOA about 2 years ago "thanking me" for opening an account. I didn't open an account with them in the last little while--I had a student loan through them but it was at least a year old.
In the letter was a phone number to call for any questions.
I looked on the BOA website and the customer service number listed on the web was different from the number on the letter.
So i called the one on the website and told them about the letter.
THEY had no record of me having an account.
I had my husband call the number in the letter and the first thing they asked for was SS, DOB, and mother's maiden name.
I told this to BOA and they had me send the letter to them and their fraud dept.
SO---call BOA....but call them from a number from their website, or your credit card--NOT the number listed in the letter. If it's a scam, they'll have a fake number there and answer it like it's BOA....

and checked the number first, it was legitimatly BoA. I just don't know who or why or how the request was initiated. Neither do they, they can only tell me WHEN it happened. I DID call back and reinstate the stop payment, referencing the advice of someone up above.
