8. Smoke is creeping into Sonoma and Marin Counties.
We got a news alert about it and sure enough I go out at lunch and the sky is a bit brown around the horizon and I could swear I smelled the smoke.

2. Scary stuff
I can't watch the video at work, but have no idea what it must be like to live out there knowing every year the fires come. :(

4. It is so smokey in Sacramento today
and we are not even close to any fires. There is a good (BAD) breeze blowing and that cannot be good.

22. Reminds me of the days when we allowed rice straw burning in the valley
My eyes are actually tearing, and I'm usually very tolerant of smoke. But look at the upside, the sun is a most unusual and pleasing shade of orange.

And, yeah, that's what it's called, because it's near James Lick Observatory. :P

It was most apropos. :)

We can't smell it, either — or, I can't. Wind's takin' it toward Merced, I reckon.

19. I didn't either
A lot depends on where it is, though - as the crow flies (why is it always a crow - do they fly straighter than other birds?), it's not far and pretty much due east. Last time there was a biggun that way, we got visible smoke but it was on the west side of MH and I think this one is on the east.

It all sucks, anyway - I hate smelling smoke in the summertime. :scared:

23. According to wikipedia
Origins

In the past, before technology existed to make the task of
navigation much easier, when lost or unsure of their position
in coastal waters, ships would release a caged crow. The crow
would fly straight towards the nearest land thus giving the
vessel some sort of a navigational fix. The tallest lookout
platform on a ship came to be known as the crow's nest.

26. The smoke's getting around now.
We had that weird gray smoke sky by late afternoon (not much of a smoke smell though.)Hey, as long as it isn't brown sky --- that's when the air is really nasty.
