My best friend's brother suffered from a heat stroke today - prayers and good vibes needed
Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 08:15 PM by Ava
One of my best friend's brothers suffered a heat stroke earlier today. He's only in his early twenties. He's on life support right now and starting to breath on his own. his eyes opened earlier which the doctors are saying is a good sign. he flatlined 6 times on the way to the hospital and some more once at the hospital so right now the damage done is not exactly known. please keep him, my friend, and their family in your thoughts and prayers. i know those DU good vibes have done wonders for people here in the past, i'm hoping they'll do the same this time.

:(

7. Sending good vibes to him... that almost happened to me on Monday.
It was 103 degrees here at our house in San Diego, with so much humidity it felt like a steambath. You couldn't breathe without inhaling the heat. Oddly, my 88 year old mother wasn't all that bothered by it, but I was miserable, with a pouding headache and my skin was hot. We don't have any air conditioning, just fans, but finally we decided to go to the neighborhood Starbucks because it is airconditioned. Unfortunately the place was full of those "Starbucks zombies" who sit there for hours staring at their laptop screens or have their homework spread out on a table. There was no place for us to sit, and nobody moved or even looked at us. It did feel good standing in there for a few minutes anyway, as we waited for our drinks. We had to sit outside in the brutal heat and humidity. I don't know how I made it through last weekend; it was like that all weekend, day and night. 114 degrees in Casa de Oro, only 4 miles from here. Fortunately today was much, much better. We'll say prayers for your best friend's brother.

23. a tip, Bob
I don't tolerate heat well. Fortunately, I no longer live in SoCal or Virginia!

But I have found one tip that helps. Get a bath towel wet, wring it out, and put it under your bare feet if you are sitting at the computer or in a chair. It really helps a lot.

Also, wouldn't a swamp cooler work pretty well in your area? Less expensive than a/c.

I recall my days in Pasadena -- 110 degrees and no a/c. I sympathize with you very much.

25. Thanks, that's a good idea.
Swamp coolers are virtually unknown in San Diego, because there is just too much humidity here for them to be efficient or effective. My niece has a swamp cooler in her house in San Bernardino, but the air is significantly drier in SB than in SD as well as hotter. It feels good to sit in front of the vent at her house and feel the cool, moist air blowing at your face. And they are very common in Arizona and the desert areas of southern California. They require low humidity to be effective, and they would work very well during our hot, dry "Santa Ana" conditions we get in the fall. But in the hot, humid summers we have here I don't think they would work because the water wouldn't evaporate enough. Fortunately we have had a dramatic change in the weather, it's 25 to 30 degrees cooler and much drier - almost fall-like. I appreciate the tips!

his brain is swelling, kidneys are failing, blood pressure is really low, and he's fully on life support right now. the doctors gave him a 15% chance of living today. my friend is really taking this hard and i'm going up to the hospital tonight to be with her. please keep praying for her family and for him.
