Worst modern comedy movie?
I'd say I just got a little dumber by watching "Idiocracy" with Luke Wilson.

1. I thought "Idiocracy" was a great movie.
Personally, I didn't enjoy "The Ex." I doubt it's the worst modern comedy, but it was just plain not funny.

11. Is Galaxy Quest a kids' movie?
 I'm serious is it for kids under 13? It's not that scary, but some of the jokes are sophisticated. Such as Alan Rickman's comment "I can't believe I went from Shakespeare to this."

12. Ahem...kid movies?
Those were two very good movies, and neither was really directed at children. Yeah, kids love animation, but Toy Story's best bits were only appreciable by adults.

(Sorry, former Pixar employee here. :hi:)

26. Galaxy Quest was brilliant
I've been watching original Star Treks lately and I keep seeing Galaxy Quest. The other night, it was one that had Kirk and Spock pretending to be at odds (in front of the Romulans) and all I could think of was Allen and Rickman yelling, "Scene-stealing hack!"

Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 04:47 PM by MysticalChicken
I count it as my least-favorite movie. I saw it in the theater and it was just not funny at all to me. I kept checking my watch thinking "when is this gonna be over?" I couldn't leave because I was with my family.

114. You had to know Star Trek to truly appreciate Galaxy Quest
It was entirely and completely a satire about the first Star Trek, and the personalities and thwarted ambitions of the cast (before the movies started).

If you didn't know/love the original Star Trek, it must not have made much sense. I loved GQ and it's definitely in my top 5 satires.

I was surprised by stargazer's comments below that he like GQ and only saw Star Trek afterwards. I couldn't imagine understanding GQ without knowing all the ST trivia.

58. Does it have to be an intentional comedy?
If not, I nominate "Showgirls." Especially for that scene in the swimming pool; Kyle MacLachlan actually looks embarrassed to be there.

"What the hell am I doing here? I was in Blue Velvet, for God's sake, and now this?"

60. Another vote for 'Freddy Got Fingered' none of these other losers can TOUCH this gem.
I challenge to sit through this movie. It is not just painfully shitty, it is AGONIZINGLY shitty. It is entertaining, however, to see how low Tom Green will sink to attempt to make people laugh. He doesn't just hit the gutter, he destroys it.

78. I work at Warner Bros. and had to sit throught this POS a few times.
The guy I work with had to sit through it with Albert Brooks!! He told me Albert Brooks was worried about how the 5.1 mix sounded. My friend told me, "He should have been worried about what a piece of crap his movie is!"

99. I was so disappointed by that one
NPR and Fresh Air gave it a pointedly favorable going-over, so that I went into it with the impression that it would be poignant, entertaining, and humorous.

It was none of these.

It served one positive purpose and one only: to remind us that Fred Thompson is toad-butt ugly.

I'd have to say their version of "Little Darlin'" is the definitive rendering... and I mean "render" in the meat-packing sense of the word

76. I feel the same way
Which is why I was gobsmacked when I got dragged to see Anchorman by some friends and found it hilarious.

I don't think it was necessarily Will Farrell that made it funny, more the mockworthy nature of local news.

Stranger than Fiction is one of my most favorite movies. It's genuinely sweet and funny. Also, Maggie Gyllenhaal rules. Also, possibly best soundtrack ever.

69. Flame if you like, but...
...I didn't like The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

I must say, though, that there are surely worse comedies out there, some of which no doubt appear on this thread. But I'd only expend time watching them if forced to by family/friends.

I thought it was going to suck but I found it absolutely hilarious! Disagree if you may but I think Steve Carell is a comical genious! Except Evan Almighty looks like its going to suck!

111. Oh, Steve Carell is by no means the problem.
And neither are Jane Lynch, Paul Rudd, and Catherine Keener. It's the material: the most creepily disingenuous, derivative, obvious stuff around. It's basically a Doris Day comedy, as one of the critics at the Guardian newspaper pointed ut, except it's will he or won't he, and of course the gross-out material and coarse language are laid on with a trowel. And we mustn't forget trotting out African-Americans and immigrants as essentially mascot figures.

74. I'm probably in the minority, but I thought "Superbad" was terrible
I'm sure there are dumber movies out there, but Superbad gets my vote because it was supposed to be good, clever, etc. It was at least 30 minutes too long, sexist, and substituted junior high sex and period jokes for actual wit.

79. And what really scares me is...
...that critics are hurrying to use expressions such as "the genius of Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen." But this is all about the almighty dollar (in other words, that teens and young adults spent millions on movie tickets) and not about whether the films are worth our time, let alone whether they'll be deemed worth our time in 20 years.

88. Cars
Was this supposed to be funny?

I know my kids made me go see it. My daughter and I wanted to leave 30 minutes into the thing but my son, who has a love affair with Pixar, made us stay all the way through the credits.

BTW I think everything else Pixar has done was fabulous - Cars was ultra predictable and derivitave of every dumb assed formula movie about love that has ever been made....

109. Wild Hogs
I was recently forced to watch this at my moms house, I was playing mystery science theatre in my head the whole time but I couldnt make fun of it out loud because my moms husband is amused by pretty much every comedy ever made and he LOVES toilet humor!!! I HATE IT! Also anything with a million fat jokes, poop jokes, or anything that involves eating other peoples hair, (any type), or any type of human waste! ITS NOT FUNNY! Producers need to get a grip! Sorry about the rant! :)
