The gin martini...okay...I'm sold...
Bombay, *whisper* Vermouth, ice, gently stirred in a bar glass and strained into a frozen martini glass...

It's a good thing.

1. It doesn't taste like lighter fluid or paint thinner to you?

Glad you're enjoying, though.

5. The mint julep segment was hysterical!
We were laughing so hard we missed nearly all the instructions. Good ol' Alton, he's a hoot.

Kudos on the Bombay, too - it's perfect for martinis.

7. Just don't forget the olive
I'm a bit of a fan of dirty martinis.

(Trapper has just opened a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer)
Hawkeye: I see you are a beer drinker, sir. Would you care for a martini?
Trapper: A martini? Yeah, I'd love a martini.
Hawkeye: Ho-Jon, get the gentleman a martini.
(to Trapper)
Hawkeye: I'm sure you will find them satisfactory. They're quite dry.
(sips from his glass)
Trapper: Don't you guys use olives?
Duke: Olives? Where in the hell do you think we are, man?
Hawkeye: We have had to make certain concessions for the war; we ARE three miles from the front line.
Trapper: Yeah, but without olives,
(reaches into coat pocket and pulls out a jar of cocktail olives - drops one into his glass)
Trapper: a martini just doesn't quite make it.
(Hawkeye and Duke stare dumbfounded at the olive)

9. not if the other stuff makes you sick
just can't drink gin. Whatever it is, the juniper berries or something else, it makes me physically ill. I'll stick to my Kettle one martini, thank you very much. :toast:

29. He's right, though. Gin is the default, so it's not a "Gin Martini", it's just a Martini.
If you make it with vodka, you're a-OK in my book, but then it's called a "Vodka Martini."

11. Funny Story...
My local Democratic Club was having a Roosevelt Day Dinner, and I decided that it would be appropriate to toast FDR's birthday using a martini (his favorite beverage). We were at a local restaurant, so I went out to the bar and ordered a martini.

"What flavor?" says the twenty-something bartender.

"Gin flavored," I growled back.

I totally agree. Don't even call it a martini unless it's made with gin. And unless the only other ingredient is a hint of vermouth, it really should be a federal crime to call it anything other than a "candy-assed girlie cocktail that nobody will be drinking next year because it's out of style."

Harumph! Haruphm!!

12. That's right
These days, anything is in a martini glass is called a martini. It's stupid.

"I'll have a Zima martini, please."

14. Oooo...Two words that should never be in the same sentence
Except in the following usage: Get the f'ing Zima out of my face and bring me a Martini before I rip your beating heart out of your chest cavity.

23. Ay-Men! Just today at a restaurant
I was looking at their "Martini" menu.
And I underscore "Martini".
Strawbery, raspberry, lemon-lime, chocolate, Kaluha, etc.

Pantywaists! Booze shouldn't taste like a banana split.
It should BURN a little.
Let ya know something SERIOUS is going down your gullet.

Favorite Eddie Murphy line...
(in a tough bar trying to act cool)
"I'll have the usual, barkeep."
"Fine (eyes-roll). What do you USUALLY have?"
"Chablis and 7-Up."

16. I hate that they've hijacked the name, Martini......
and make all those flavored Vodka drinks. Get you're own drink name you Cherry Flavored Vodka drinkers.

BTW, I like a teaspoon of the juice from the olive jar. Makes it a Dirty Martini.

17. next time instead of vermouth
swirl a little good scotch in your bar glass, toss it out, then add ice and gin

you'll dig it

or instead of your 'whisper' swirl the vermouth, toss it, then add ice and gin

28. Tell ya what - a little bourbon works too
3 oz gin
1 oz bourbon
Just a bit of extra-dry vermouth
Shake it over ice, then put in a few olives to make sure you eat your vegetables. Surprisingly good!
