hey guys, we need some good vibes regarding adopting our doggie
So...my fiance and I fell in love with this gorgeous pit-bullish dog. Our landlord didn't care that it was a pit bull, but when he called the insurance company to finish the paper work, we were told we couldn't adopt her because she was a pit bull (we'll ignore that the phrase 'pit bull' is both 1)scientifically insignificant 2)has an irrational stigma).

So, we both cried our hearts out. I mean, shit, I've cried less over break-ups. We LOVE this dog :(

But today we got a call from the adoption agency saying that her papers state her as a "Stafford Shire bull terrier"--which is an allowed breed per the insurance agency!!!!

So PLEASE I need some vibes--we LOVE this dog and would be the perfect family for her. We REALLY want to give her a good life.

Thanks all :)

1. Your insurance company doesn't know that a Staffie is
a pit bull?

Wow. Hard to believe.

2. They're not pit bulls.
Like I said, pit bull is a scientifically insignificant term. They're different.

3. No, a Staffie is a pit breed.
You're just lucky the insurance company doesn't know this.

I don't want to turn this into one of those threads.

5. Terrier mix or bulldog mix usually works well, too.
Good vibes coming. If you needed a good rec from another rescue, I'd give that to you as well.

9. I think we're ok with the papers we'll be getting
It'll be a "Stafford (bull)terrier/lab mix". We called the insurance company and they said that's fine.

Like I said, our landlord is chill about this, he likes rotties and pit bull dogs, it's a matter of CYA for him. A verbal approval is all we need.

Any other tips on paperwork?

6. good luck w/ the adoption!
I understand a certain amount of wariness with pit-ish breeds, but some of them are sweet and smart and wonderful. I used to work at a shelter and saw some really good dogs put to sleep because of their breed. :-( Good for you for rescuing this one!

10. You've got two Doxies?!
I'm so jealous. I want another one, but party pooper Skipper (my hubby) keeps telling me no. They are beautiful!

The black dog (Buster) is his dad.

8. No parsing words here - just good vibes
Pit bulls have to be trained to be mean and aggressive - in their natural state they're as sweet-natured as any other dog (so I've heard - I'm a cat person). Good luck!

17. our "American Bull Terrier" Bobbycobain is a very sweet and
lovable doggie. He is my daughter's dog actually but he was part of the package when she moved back in with us. He is being trained to be sweet and silly and to obey commands and not lunge at things when we walk.

12. Good Luck.
Those poor dogs have bad reps because a lot of them get bad fucking owners. I'm sure you'd be wonderful pet parents. GOOD LUCK!!

16. Scout says....
Woof!

Which means either "good vibes" or "feed me NOW, DAMNIT, NOW!"

But, I interpreted it as "good vibes!"

18. Check out www.badrap.com
It's a web site devoted to pit bull rescues. These dogs are badly misunderstood and much maligned. Many are wonderful pets,
great with family--some may have been abused and bred to fight other dogs and thus made to be dangerous. But I am told that their basic instinct is to lavish love on their people. A friend of mine has two rescue bullies. They are marvelous pets. She's been educating me about the breed. I won't take up
any more space here...I'm not an expert...but
Please please do check out bully websites like the one above, get to know the breed and get to know
people who know the breed and can answer your questions and allay your concerns. The rescue experts are very sensible and very realistic, too and I'm sure they can help you with your new sweetie.
Congratulations!
