Do you think they'll find Steve Fossett alive?
I try not to be so negative, but the more time passes the more unlikely it seems that he'll be found alive.

2. I've read that he does
If he has food and water, he could make it up to 2 weeks.

3. Part of me wonders if he even wants to be found...
The detail about not filing a flight plan had my alarm bells going off.

7. There's nothing at all unusual about not filing a flight plan.
It's not required for a private aircraft if the weather is good; and since he was out looking for a route for some future auto race, he wouldn't have wanted to file a flight plan because that would have required him to list a route and an arrival time -- which he probably didn't know.

But he was likely flying at a very low altitude, and could have got tangled up in a mountain downdraft or stuck in a canyon his airplane didn't have the power to climb out of. Even for an experienced pilot that kind of flying can be tricky.

8. Ah, okay - thanks for clearing that up for me
I always thought a flight plan had to be filed.

:hi:

I hear you all are in the heat and humidity again.

9. Yeah, for now.
It's supposed to thunderstorm tonight, then cool off tomorrow, though.

4. I think he just diappeared, like Antoine de St.-Exupery
and Amelia Earhart.

5. I think he was the one flying those nukes around....
seriously though, I think he is probably injured at the very least and unable to signal rescuers (like with a fire, etc).

6. I hope so, if not
the only thing I can think of is maybe he had a heart attack or something like that.....
if so

he died doing what he loves, living on the edge.... how many of us will be able to say that??

10. Not a hope in hell. I wish it were otherwise, but he's gone. He had TWO "come
and get me" beacon generators (one in the airplane and one in his watch), neither of which was triggered.

He's gone. I wish he wasn't, but that's the real world for you.

I wondered about that.
