You can be harsh, like when my mom died and people said 'get over it, she ain't coming back and you need to grow up and move on' which was the truth, but it was also the truth that I was depressed chemically, had 8 exposed roots in my mouth, and not only had I lost her but all the dreams I had of being her neighbor and having her watch my little girl grow up.
Honesty is a two way street, and it can be harsh in both directions - it does not have to be harsh when we all agree to listen to truth, the big truth being we are all different and handle the facts in different ways.

There are sins of omission that all of us make every day, in terms of honesty. We trade complete honesty with our peers for a modicum of decency. Hell, that may be as good a definition of society as any.
