If you were a substitute teacher, who would you rather teach? |
|
Middle school or high school? If anyone has any experience in either, I'd absolutely love to hear about your experience.

1. I haven't done high school, but middle school was all right. The kids could be |
|
full of themselves, of course, but they were also a lot of fun when they wanted to be.

before I got my teaching credential I subbed in all levels to see what I liked the most. I ended up teaching elementary school and a few years later became a high school counselor. Middle school was my least favorite age group. I found those kids the most difficult to deal with.

5. I've always felt uncomfortable with that middle school age |
|
but I still look young so I don't know how well that would go over in a high school.

7. When I student taught at a high school, I was constantly |
|
stopped and asked to produce a hall pass. It is tough when a teacher looks like he/she could be one of the students - both in terms of being accepted as a member of the faculty and commanding the respect of the students.

8. Yeah, that's a big concern of mine |
|
I wanted to do elementary but LAUSD, the district I applied for, is only hiring for secondary education.

3. I taught both Middle and High School years ago and this |
|
year submitted the paperwork to do some substitute teaching (in my district they call subs "Guest" Teachers - LOL).
By far, when I was teaching full time, I enjoyed Middle School more. The kids are still young enough to have fun and be silly. They haven't yet reached the jaded, cynical stage. I'm hoping when I get called for sub jobs, most of them will be at the Middle School level.

6. Interesting perspective |
|
It certainly makes me less wary of middle school children. Thanks for the information!

9. Middle schoolers are really an enjoyable age group and, |
|
in my opinion, get an undeserved bad rap. A former 8th grade student of mine is now the principal of the school I taught at years ago, and he was kind enough to write a glowing recommendation for me based on his own experiences in my class. He wrote that I was fair, flexible, and, most of all, understanding and accepting of the unique character of middle schoolers caught between child and young adulthood. Made me smile!

10. High School. The kids are more mature and often realize that being a PITA is not cool |

I found that HS worked better. Although I did run across some real jerks (one ROTC kid pushed me out of the doorway to leave the room--he wanted to leave for lunch 10 minutes early), for the most part I found myself subbing for the same HS.
I've done worse jobs for less money.

12. Honestly, my first instinct is high school |
|
It's just the age thing, although I can make myself look older.
By the way, I love your avatar!

13. Thanks Dawn & Jen put me in my happy place |
|
the age thing is why I chose HS too. Although I did sub for a middle school orchestra class -- that was kinda fun (got to relive my band geek glory days LOL).
If I were still subbing right now, I'd stick to HS (and one school in particular) I found that if you get in good with the school secretary, he/she will keep you in mind for the good gigs. Good luck!
