A thought just struck me...
This has been a totally rotten summer for opera lovers. First, soprano Beverly Sills died of lung cancer at the beginning of July; then tenor Jerry Hadley shot himself in the head in mid-July; then conductor Richard Bradshaw, general director of the Canadian Opera Company, had a fatal heart attack in mid-August, not all that long after his 30-year dream of an opera house for Toronto was realized; and now Luciano Pavarotti is gone, too.

All of the above have either starred in or conducted noteworthy productions of Tosca. If I were at all superstitious, I'd be convinced that it has something to do with the legendary "Tosca Curse" (http://www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/11.24.04/tosca-0448.html). Death has always been a staple of operatic plots, but lately the stars have been dropping like they're in a slasher movie. What bloody next?
