You should have known better than to rush out and buy the shiniest new piece of crap on the market. That's the price of conspicuous consumerism.

1. Good job I don't require your sympathy then, isn't it?
I'm very happy with my iPhone and have enjoyed using it for the past couple of months. It's been a very useful tool and well worth the money I spent. The $100 store coupon I'll be getting next week is a nice perk that I'll put toward the new iMac I was planning to buy in the next few weeks.

I do think that Steve Jobs made a tactical error reducing the price by 33% barely two months after the phone's release. Had he introduced a new 16GB iPhone at $599 at the same time as reducing the 8GB model to $399, I could have understood it, but to slash the price of a product that is so new and apparently selling so well sends a very confusing signal to the marketplace, and can potentially undermine confidence in the product. The next few weeks will tell whether the price slash has had the desired result or merely been a giant miscalculation.

2. MIscalculation? Are you kidding us or yourself?
You are doing exactly what he and the marketing team wants: you are mollified with your rebate, and you are planning on giving that money right back to Apple.

4. Not mollified because I didn't require mollification.
The iPhone was worth $600 to me when I bought it, or else I wouldn't have bought it. It's extremely well made and does everything I need from a phone. If it was a commodity that I intended reselling, I'd certainly be pissed off, but since it's a tool that I intend to use until something better comes along, the price cut doesn't affect me. The $100 rebate is a nice extra because it will allow me to save a bit of money on something I was going to buy anyway.

I don't subscribe to the idea that this whole debacle was the result of some Machiavellian plot. It was very poor marketing and even worse PR, with Steve having to issue his mealy-mouthed "open letter" a day later. Apple is usually cleverer about how it rips its customers off. This little drama has revealed the man behind the curtain.

3. I don't feel sorry for me either.
I definitely got $100 worth of "ooooh, is that the iPhone?" out of it.
