Okay, what's the latest on what I can and can't bring on an airplane these days?
Can I bring a shampoo bottle in my carryon, or do I still have to check them and let them explode?

After my last suitcase got mangled and I never did get paid for the damned thing I'd really rather carry my stuff on, but I need more than 3 oz of shampoo.

Oh, and will the TSA folk freak if I have food in my bag? I can't imagine they would, but is some overzealous sort going to decide that hummus or a little bit of earth balance constitutes a potentially explosive gel?

Are they still snatching makeup away?

I am so very sick of this fake security nonsense. :sigh:

1. Here's a link to the relevant Stasi website:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

It's still all about the 3 oz bottles in a clear plastic baggie.

4. sorry the kip hawley baggies are still being enforced
and in a new, evil twist, at some airports, you now have to take out not just your laptop but ALL electronics, cell phones, digital cameras, etc.

it is a mess! i had a TSA agent look at my camera so hard that i thought he was thinking of buying one like it

if it's a liquid, gel, or creme, it's supposed to be in the baggie

as for food, sometimes peanut butter and pumpkin pie are okay, and sometimes they're gels, and who the hell knows about hummus, sounds like a suspicious middle eastern thing if you ask ke

a lot of times now the "harder" make-up like chapstick is going thru unchallenged, instead of being automatically seized, but no guarantees, so i carry on the cheap brands or the ones that are about to be used up anyway

you can get away w. a lot, and when i can't quite everything in the kip bag, i'll slip the extra item down in a side pocket in the carryon somewhere, and so far so good, but only do this w. items you can afford to lose -- also don't yell at them if they find it and take it, just say you were sorry and forget it was in there, no use getting written up or something

7. Don't bring ANYTHING with you!
Get to the distant end and BUY everything you need. Shampoo. Makeup. Your toothbrush. Most of your clothes.

Stick like one change of clothes, one lipstick, a comb, two pair of socks, a set of underwear and your wallet in the smallest carry-on bag you can muster, fly to the distant end, go straight to Target, buy all the stuff you'll actually need, and MAIL it back to California when you're about ready to go home.

And speaking of hummus...my wife has suddenly developed a craving for this food item. Oh. My. God. She found some really low-grade hummus somewhere that's infused with onions, garlic, horseradish and a few other lovelies. Eating that will solve the energy crisis.

Edited on Sat Sep-08-07 10:04 PM by pitohui
during my precious week in paris i don't plan to spend my time in the store, and the dollar is so weak anyway that you are just paying way too much

a better plan is to learn how to re-package things in small hotel sized shampoo bottles and also how to get by w. less product

also you may need to switch to solid product for some make-up items

ask at cosmetic counters, get on mailing lists for samples, you'd be amazed how much it helps

46. crutters, i HAVE been question for having too little luggage on return flight but it was quick
yeah, i got questioned at customs "where's your clothes?" but the great thing about not having a lot of luggage is that it's quick for them to search or swab if they like

on many of my trips i may fly with a carry-on bag, of SMALL amounts of toiletries, and OLD clothes, and then on the way back, since i do not shop, i have very little to carry, because i have used up the toiletries and i have thrown away the clothes except for what i am wearing

but at the end of the day it is not as strange as checking into a motel without luggage, you can explain it with a giggle as "i travel light" or "i gave the stuff away in nairobi" and even if they don't believe you, because you have so little stuff, it only takes a short while for them to swab your remaining items

if you were smuggling something, would you travel light or would you have it concealed in a bag with oodles of irrelevant stuff to dilute the scent going to the beagle's nose? i rest my case

they are curious when you travel light but it is not going to seem all that sinister, it is more that they are joking with you

With the exception of nitroglyricin and gasoline. The NG can cause flushing and headaches, and gas will burn and taste bad like a motherfucker.

Although if you're going to blow yourself up in an hour, any effects aren't going to really make a difference unless you drop dead on the spot.

Of course, the only irish part of my name is the last name so I'm probably safe. First name is welsh, middle name is english. And no irish terrorist would have an english middle name. :)

34. Well, to be fair, my suitcase did look like it was run over by Hummers with snow tires on.
I don't think there was much I could have done to protect contents of the darned thing.

The whole situation was a bummer, since the airline never did reimburse me, and it was borrowed so I had to buy another more expensive one to get my goodies home and then an equivalent bag to replace my friend's suitcase. Oh, and we spent darn near an hour in the baggage claim office filing out the paperwork on the thing, while the girl behind the counter had some long crying fit- it was not the best start to an otherwise nice trip.

Different airline this time- I guess I should give them a shot before I assume they're going to wreck my stuff.

37. These says I think you have to strip naked and subject to full cavity search
that is, of course, if you forget to give them your receipt first.

:eyes:

You can only have 3oz or less but that doesn't mean you can't take a couple of bottles of the stuff.

Your main limit is a gallon ziploc bag. And don't forget to put things like lipgloss in the bag. Most makeup is powdered base and not an issue. But lipgloss is borderline and since I have a selection from Dior, Chanel and MAC - not about to have them swipe that.

As for food - that's a very grey area. I think as long as it's dry food you should be ok. Once you get into anything liquid or jell like and you can kiss that stuff goodbye

It may not help if you have lots of liquid stuff (lotion +conditioner +toothpaste +shampoo, etc.) but you can put the same thing in more than one of those little 3oz bottles. I have a lotion I use lots of so I always fill several small bottles with it. No one has ever asked what was in the bottles, just made sure the 1qt bag was closed.

48. that isn't correct
you can have more than one bottle as long as each bottle is 3 oz. or less and the total of the bottles fits into the kip bag

examples: three "airport" bottles of jack black -- no problem

three bottles of conditioner (i'm always worried a hotel will offer shampoo but no conditioner) -- no problem

if you are really worried, then put a different brand in ea. bottle but i've traveled a lot since this crap started and trust me it is not true that you have to have a different liquid in each of the bottles

44. There's what they call the 3-1-1 rule:
All fluids in 3 oz bottles. All bottles in a 1 qt. plastic bag. 1 bag per person.

I flew twice in July and had no problem. I don't know what vegan brand of shampoo you use, but I bought travel-size bottles of BWC shampoo, conditioner, and lotion, and also had lip balm in the bag. Got the travel bottles here:

Wish I could offer more help, but they're really insistent on the 3 oz bs.

49. It's however many 3 oz. bottles you can fit into the quart bag. Can you just
fill all of them with shampoo or do you need a lot of other liquidy toiletries? Bed Bath and Linens and Things and Beyond has FDA-approved packs of 3 oz. containers inside a quart size bag if you want to go that route. No guess work on figuring out whether the bottle is the right size.

We're going to Italy in a few weeks and we are dead set on only bringing carry-on bags (half of our trip with be a train voyage so we don't want to have to drag a whole bunch of luggage down those narrow train aisles). We've figured out the clothing, now we're figuring out the toiletries. Luckily, I have short hair that needs very little product. We're bringing one container of lotion (I make one at home with aloe and coconut oil), one shampoo, and the rest camp suds that can be used for washing bodies, clothes and dishes.

54. if you're going on vacation
maybe you could mail yourself a package ahead of your trip

I don't fly very often and have never, not once (knock wood) had any trouble w/ my luggage, so I never understand why so many people have trouble packing their toiletries. Nearly everyone I know seems to worry about it.

Hotels will hold a package for someone who has a room reserved. If you're visiting w/ friends, that shouldn't be a problem I wouldn't think.
