2. Here's my quote:
Opening credits to a movie. On the screen appears "Universal Pictures International presents...".

One of the guys: "Doesn't the fact that it's universal MAKE it international?"

For no apparant reason, that tickles the hell out of me!

none of this "ten-minutes-at-a-time" bullshit.

You can find the episodes adjusted to fit on a CD-R, 699 megabytes. That's what most of mine are.

6. Fixed, jackasses!
Man, that's just about the most ironic thing I've ever done on here--exposing my own incompetence whilst talking about a show that THRIVED on other people's stupid mistakes.

At least I didn't direct a movie where a character gets killed, and then show her sitting at her desk 3 minutes later. And that would be Space Munity...

Man, I'm a nerd for that show!

9. OK, OK somebody stop me!
Dr. Forrester: Ah, it does my heart good to see Cro burnt beyond all recognition! Oh, Frank, it's time for this week's invention exchange.
(Frank enters crying, wearing two boards with an odd assortment of pills glued on)
Dr. Forrester: Oh, accept the pain, Frank!
(to Joel)
Dr. Forrester: You've heard the expression, "That's a hard pill to swallow"? Well, our invention exchange this week is just that - some hard pills to swallow. Uh, turn Frank. And cough.
(Frank does so)
Dr. Forrester: (points to pill) See this pill right here? It shold be easy to swallow, shouldn't it Frank? Yes, it should be except for the three-pronged fish hook attached to it.
(points to another one)
Dr. Forrester: This one - I'm not going to kid you - this is *very* difficult to swallow. It's a Not-So-Tiny Time pill, complete with a living gerbil.
TV's Frank: (shouts) Terry, no!
Dr. Forrester: Oh, Terry, yes! If you can keep this one down, you'll have a pet that knows you inside and out. If you have trouble keeping one pill down, try our pill necklace of piptric acid - one-hundred and five capsules on a string. Keep that gag reflex active 'til the cows come home - the longer it takes to swallow, the harder it gets.
(with evil glee)
Dr. Forrester: Yes, and the children?
TV's Frank: (shouts) Not the children! Aw-haw-haw!
Dr. Forrester: The children love vitamin shapes, like, shaped like cartoons. Whimsical shapes! Whimsical shapes, and wouldn't it be hard for all those Flintstone kids if their favorite vitamin came... turn, Frank...
(Frank turns, revealing a life-size Fred Flintsone vitamin)
Dr. Forrester: ... life-size, hmm, hmm? Ball's in your court, Joel!

21. "The Pod People"
One of my favorite episodes!! I think the kid in the flick is more scarey than the aliens!! "Yes mother, just tending to the incubus." I think its cervo who puts that one out there as the creepy kid is trying to hatch is alien egg or "specimen" as he calls them through out the film. LMAO! Love MST3K!

22. Mike Nelson has revived the MST3K format with a new project called Rifftrax
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 06:28 AM by ReadTomPaine
www.rifftrax.com

Mike's been releasing MP3 commentary tracks that sync to DVD versions of movies and most of the cast from the SciFi channel years has rejoined him, including Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett (who's wife just gave birth to a baby girl, incidentally). Since this format doesn't require them to gain permission of the filmmakers to create their commentary tracks, they have been doing lots of the high budget, fairly recent films they were never able to do on the original show.

They already have dozens of them available, with titles like 300, Independence Day, Star Trek - Generations and the infamous Roadhouse among them. They are just 2-3 bucks each and download in no time.

They are also doing live shows again - I caught one recently - Stallone's Over the Top and it was a blast.

Check it out. It's like a dream come true for MST3K fans. It's the next best thing to the show still being on the air.

The Matrix was the most portentous, overindulgent piece of shit I've seen--hopefully, Mike and Co. eviscerated it.

33. They did a great job nailing the Matrix...
and all you need is a computer and a DVD player to make Rifftrax work. You play the MP3 on a computer or MP3 player and the movie on a DVD player. There's a voice prompt to sync them - it's very low tech and easy to set up, nothing to it. Some fans have even created AVIs of the films with the Rifftrax commentary embedded into them and then upload them to P2P networks and elsewhere, tho I'd urge you to support Mike's project and give him the buck or two he asks for each track. It's a great idea and they are in top form. They even reference older running MST3K jokes and films.

41. How was the ATTACK OF THE CLONES riff?
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 06:29 PM by DerekG
I wouldn't want to hear The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith being ripped, as I enjoyed both immensely, but even I readily admit there were passages from Episode II that all but invited a MST3K styled attack.

The fireplace scene alone probably supplied them with an hour's worth of ammunition.

42. I don't think they've done Sith yet...
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 07:40 PM by ReadTomPaine
I've only seen Phantom Menace so far and it was quite funny - they have great fun with Jar Jar, Sam Jackson's small part, the misaligned compositing work and the weird relationship between the monotone Portman and Mini-Vader Jake Lloyd. I find I love the shows whether I like the movie or not - you might want to give it a try!

If memory serves, with Clones they introduce a character called "Chad Vader" who sits in as a guest riffer with Mike and Kevin. He's Darth Vader's slacker little brother!

There are a few Rifftrax I have yet to see, including Casino Royale, Aeon Flux, the TV pilots and some of the ones Mike did solo (the riffs with ensemble casts are better than the ones where Mike does the commentary alone). Even for a big fan - they are making them so quickly it's hard to keep up! They seem to release a few a month.

Other guest riffers have included his wife Bridget, Mary Jo Pehl, Neil Patrick Harris (yes- Doogie Howser himself) and Rich Kyanka (founder of the "Something Awful" website).

Edit - Typo

23. ... the best US TV show never to make it to the UK
and I can't understand why - it's a combination of clever, but sometimes puerile, humour that never takes anything seriously (including itself) that would have gone done a storm in Britain. I only saw the Sci-Fi Channel ones when I was living in the US, and I know some purists say the earlier ones were far superior.

24. I prefer the early Joel years myself - but both have their charm....
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 06:44 AM by ReadTomPaine
Joel was more laid back & fatherly toward the robots and his humor was more surreal. They were sort of a dysfunctional family. Mike was more of a brother/college buddy to the robots and his humor was more conventional. The later shows suffered only slightly - the main problem being Mary Jo Pehl - the replacement for Trace Beaulieu, who couldn't pull off her role nearly as well as her predecessor. Trace had a unique chemistry with Frank Conniff and when they left the show, it lost an intangible quality it never regained again, although some later episodes like "Prince of Space" are still among the best they had done.

Great stuff - I've watched every one of them many times.
