People suck...another TK421 rant about customers!
OK...so I picked up this part-time job at a Halloween costume store, and tonight I had to deal with a bunch of STUPID TEENAGERS and people with BABY CARRIAGES the whole night.

I'll keep this short and sweet....one of the group of teenagers ( snot-noses ) said out loud " This store SUCKS". She said this loudly so everyone could hear it ( teenager ). I told her that she could leave the store if she didn't like it. The little bastards left.....good riddance!!!!!!!

1. I could never "work with the public". I salute your ability.
I am not suited for "customer service" work. I would be surly and make wise ass comments at every opportunity. Can't do it. I don't think management would appreciate my calling customers "dumb-ass" all the time.

2. Because a teenager said it,
chances are her stupid remark may bring in more mature people.

There is something about teenagers and their primitive attitudes that really gets annoying at times. :(

You need one of these:

3. You're already a much better man than I.
If given the option of working in a public-facing role or walking down the street naked I'd have to stop and ponder. I'm often tempted to intervene when a fellow customer is being rude to an assistant in a shop - but I fear that I'm too English to open my mouth...I do make strong point of always smiling and being polite to shop-assistants, however.

4. It's the "serial browsers" who bug me the most
if they're actually looking to buy something, that's fine, but a serial browser is someone killing time by shuffling, reading, rearranging/dumping merchandise where it doesn't belong because "someone else" will put it back where it belongs... and then after as long as 30 minutes to 2 hours(!) they buy nothing or want to buy $2.00 used paperback with a $20 bill.

You have my sympathies, snotty teens are the worst, well, and the "wait on me now because I'm the most important customer in the store, you lackey!" people.

:pals:

5. I had my own business for over 10 years.
Sole proprietorship, 1 employee...which left me to deal with just about everything.

Occasionally I'd get a remark like you did. Finally, I made up a list and copied it. When I'd get a complaint that I couldn't do anything about I'd say 'oh, I'm so sorry we can't meet your needs. Here's a list of others with the same type of products I carry. Maybe one of them will better suit you'...while thinking 'good! Let the competition have to deal with your nasty ass'.

8. As my old manager used to say
"Not everyone is cut out for this job." Sounds like you might be one of them.

Honestly, having someone say, "This store sucks" loudly is pretty tame compared to some of the things I've experienced in my 8 year tour of duty in retail. It gets real fun when they say that while right in your face, demanding you do something about whatever it is that has them so pissed off.

All I can say is that a large part of what you get paid for is to put up with obnoxious people. Seriously. And don't take it personally. Life's too short.
