Shortchanged
Yesterday, I was shortchanged a dollar for the second time at the local hardware store by the same clerk. I think it was deliberate. Should I tell the Store Manager first or the Police?

1. maybe from now on you pay w/ a debit card or a check
or ask her to count out your change as she gives it back to you.

3. Others will be taken advantage of.
That would solve the O.P.'s problem but it won't stop the clerk from stealing other peoples money. I don't think it is the fact a dollar is lost but the fact that the clerk is doing it.

11. You caught it but others probably didn't.
My point is a dollar is probably not going to put you in the poor house. The thought of someone stealing from you is probably the main motivation for your complaining to the manager. I once spent 10 minutes retrieving a 50 cent overcharge from a store. It wasn't the money but the fact they had a sign that was quoting a lower price than the product rang up as.

2. Manager.
You want this clerk terminated (rightfully so) and the best way is to talk to management. This will prevent others from being ripped off.

7. The Manager was my first choice, also.
But won't the clerk just get another retail job and steal there, too.

10. The change due was in BIG numbers on a screen.
All she had to do was count one, two, three, four.

13. I really doubt
that someone would jeopardize their job for a dollar. My guess is that it was an honest mistake. She may be just too nervous to count correctly. Give the clerk the benefit of the doubt, but do bring the issue up to management.

14. not "a dollar"
lots of "a dollars" add up.

One dollar from each customer over the course of a shift, 6 days a week - et voila -

15. Talk to the manager about it
It might not be deliberate, but if the clerk has a hard time counting to 3 or 4 in her capacity as a clerk, it might not be the best job for her or perhaps a reprimand will make her more conscientious.

17. PPT.
Personality Profiling Tests.

There's nary a store that does NOT have potential employees taking one. And to pass you must know rudimentary mathematics.

16. Tell the manager this time. AND
start counting your change RIGHT THEN and call the manager immediately. If they don't make it right call the cops.
