Dear customers,
In order to have a harmonious working relationship, there are a few things I need to bring to your attention. No doubt that with a little effort, we can come to a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Though I am paid to help you, I am not your servant. When you take 15 items in to a change room with you, it should not be my job to go in after you and pick up all 15 items. And turn them right side out. And hang them back up. And clean them off. And reattach the tags. It is generally considered courteous to hang things back up after you have tried them on. If you don't know where they go, I'd be happy to put them back for you. But just because I *will* pick them up and put them away doesn't mean you should be a lazy fucking slob. I am not your mother, or your child's nanny.

On the same nanny note, I should not have to chase your three children through the store. I understand that kids become over exuberant. I work with children every day. I love kids. I have oodles of patience with kids. However, no matter how much patience, understanding and so forth I may have, I will not tolerate your children ripping $50 masks off the wall and damaging them, tying feather boas in knots, throwing wigs around and yanking every shoe down off of a display. Sometimes children get worked up, but it is YOUR responsibility to either get control or remove them. Or I will kick you out. After charging you for damages. Period. If I have to say something more than once, that's it.

I am not interested in what another store charges for the same item. I don't work there. I am especially not interested in explaining 5+ times why we will not price match period, let alone on an item they don't even have in stock. I will not call other stores for you to find out if they have what I carry for cheaper, I will not draw you a map, I will not let you use my computer to search for internet deals.

And just as a final reminder, it is not my fault that your daughters teacher assigned her $104 shoes. It is not my fault that your sons feet double in size every two and a half weeks. It is not my fault that you insisted on buying too large shoes and the teacher told you they were unacceptable. And it is not my fault that your child waited until she got home to tell you that her shoes are horribly uncomfortable.

I understand that the 'back to school' time is very trying for everyone involved. With just a little effort, I'm sure we can get along and work together.

-Aly

"We came here to get shoes because I'm going to be a ballerina except my mum and I got cool tattoos did you see my sponge bob socks?"

Their trains of thought fascinate and enrapture me.

9. Here's a train of thought from a professor of Russian stuff I've had class with...
This is as close to verbatim as I can come. Oh, and he's from Europe somewhere and his native language is not English. It wouldn't make sense without that knowledge:

"I don't know why I'm always calling him 'little Putin'. I guess I'm just unafraid of him. Brezhnev... terrified me. Andropov: scared me to death. But I am unafraid of Putin. Once I asked a young gentleman what it means to be 'metrosexual'. He said: they are so unafraid. That is how I learned this word, unafraid. It is very recent!"

yesterday DU was inundated with "discussions" about the constitutionality of retail reciept-checking, especially of wealthy assholes who might refuse to show one.

the Circuit City threads, but, if you are one of the lucky ones, you really don't want know any more.

OTOH, you might be interested in www.customerssuck.com which is a shadow of its former self years ago, but still has as its motto, "The customer is NEVER right."

13. Retail sucks
I worked a retail job for about 2 hours once. That was all I could handle. It was either walk out or strangle someone.

Do like me and get a CDL. You have to put up with about 75% less bullshit. Just get the load there on time without wrecking the truck and everybody is happy.

14. I have never driven in my life.
I don't mind retail all together in general, but at times like this it's 10 straight hours with no escape and a disproportionate number of customers.
So I lose my mind.
I'll find it again, and go back to not hating it and being in charge :D

That anyone who doubts that people are descended from apes has never worked retail.

But I think that most apes are better behaved.

27. You would hate my MiL
Her attitude about hanging things up is "They pay people to do that"

My boss from many years ago used to say "Retail is a whore's business, you open up your legs and just let anyone screw you."

28. I *hate* that attitude.
When people bitch about prices, it's so tempting to say "They cost so much because I have to chase around after you to pick them up off the floor, and I demanded a raise if my position was upgraded to nanny".

But really, I don't know about every retail clerk, but *I* don't get paid to clean up after people. I get paid to help them. I get paid to fit their shoes and have a complete knowledge of product and so forth. I in no way am paid for picking up after lazy slobs.

And just because someone WILL do it doesn't mean it isn't rude and inconsiderate and, well, rude as hell.
