1. It was so so so sad
I'll admit - the girl had talent, she really could sing.

And tonight she could barely lip-sync and stay in step with the song.

3. I'm just the opposite
I never thought she could sing or dance.

All of her music is laced with extra tracks.

You never hear her sing anything with her voice alone.

I wasn't aware she couldn't dance until I saw her with Michael Jackson on the Jackson Family Honors (or whatever that show was named).

13. Actually, she really can't sing. Never could. It's just a lot of work in the studio
to make her sound better. Honestly. I know of some folks in the industry who have talked about what a train wreck all her recordings are before they are mixed to the nth degree. Her live shows have always involved a lot of lip synching and backing tracks and mixing.

That's why I have a hard time feeling sorry for her. She never should've had a career to begin with, and yet she's worth millions. There are thousands of young, attractive women who are way more talented than she, but just weren't in the right place at the right time.

14. She did singing on the Mickey Mouse club
so she's got a voice

Perhaps it was the industry that ruined it by over dubbing it.

There were 3 famous people to come from the Mickey Mouse Club - it's nice to see that Christina Aguilara and Justin Timberlake have their heads screwed on straight

26. That's true
Also, on the song "Everytime," she shows she has a bit of a voice. Sure, I'm sure they used a lot of control, but she's at least a little better than someone who can't sing at all. I'm not a fan, but I like a few of her songs. The new song is not good, and her performance was pretty sad. Too bad, since In The Zone is actually her best CD. It's been a steep drop from there. She even looks so artificial now.

She had one of those big voices. I'll agree that over the years it's deteriorated much, but give credit where it's due - the girl could sing at one point!

43. I've never seen it but unless the MM Club aired live they can always fix
someone's bad singing. If they liked having Britney on the show for whatever reason and her singing wasn't up to par, it's quite easy to adjust things before the show airs. Or reshoot, or edit out the places where she really effed up.

If it aired live I stand corrected. But the only time I ever saw her do something live where she wasn't obviously lip-synching it was a complete disaster. She was absolutely horrendous, and this was before her recent melt-down. I actually did feel sorry for her because Christina Aguilera performed on the same show and sung circles around Britney.

I mean, half of her songs have the vocals run through special effect filters so they sound like a robot. I have a feeling that's not just for effect.

So that's part of it. Not all of it, of course. She is not a great singer. Probably a slightly above average one who benefited from the producers, who made some irresistible hits (to me - just bad for others.)

in front of an audience, but even to me that seemed sad. It seemed obvious that she was lip-syncing (which, of course, means she was even doing that badly). And her dancing was so stiff. It almost makes me wonder if she has back trouble, the way she didn't seem to want to bend forward. And she's gotten a paunch!

Other than that...nicely done, Brit

Not even MTV, with all of their creative camera angles, could make that look like a decent performance.

I never thought she was anything great, but she could dance. I'll not deny her that.

She looked uncomfortable with the routine and as if she was slightly unsteady. She appeared actually to need the assistance of the other dancers as she was going up and down on the platform.

Whoever was in charge of getting her ready for that performance should be fired and ran out of the business.

The overall feeling one had upon viewing it was that it was painfully unprofessional.

MTV Awards bounce back after Britney

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer 1 hour, 9 minutes ago

LAS VEGAS - Somewhere, Kevin Federline is laughing. An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards — but for all the wrong reasons.

Kicking off the show Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More," Spears looked bleary and unprepared, much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles. She walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. She appeared to have forgotten the art of lip-synching. And, perhaps most unforgivable given her once-taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.

Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at Spears with a confused look on his face; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.

Some comeback. Breathlessly hyped by MTV as the evening's most anticipated performance, it became the most shockingly bad of the night. Jive Records might want to push back that Nov. 13 album release date.

I think she's still got a few years in her. If she'd stop being a drunken twit and pull her head out of her ass, she might have some chance.

As far as talent goes, Christina has her flat-out whipped. If they were in a competition, Christina kicked her ass all over the place with the release of her latest album. Back to Basics kicks ass.

Her new album should be getting awards all over the place. I love the juxposition between 40s swing and blues with the modern beats. Amazing talent and insight.

As I told my wife...Brittney's in it for her ego. Christina's in it for the music. It makes a world of difference.

And while she sounds great it feels a little overproduced somehow. Almost like a Broadway revue of old showtunes. It's not really her fault, nor do I think she was going for total authenticity. I don't know, I can't really put my finger on it. Anyway, I do think it's a great effort and I hope it gets younger people into older music, but I still prefer the original music from that era. But it's a personal preference thing, not a comment on her talent or abilities.

it's how she performed, which was something fiercely horrible to watch.

Weight-wise Britney looks great, but she's still trying to dress like she's some teenage pop-tart circa "Oops I did it again" era. Even Madonna clothes matured with age. Madonna took risks but not to the point she looked like a common streetwalker

65. Madonna also wasn't photographed hitting the clubs nightly once she was a mom either
I have no doubt that Madonna used nannies to assist with child care but I definitely don't recall almost nightly images of Madonna hitting the clubs and falling out of cars half-dressed once she was a mother.

The only way Britney can really salvage her image at this time is to just retire for a few years, get her stuff together and figure out how to re-make her professional image into something more fitting of her life situation. It's not going to be easy as Britney's career doesn't seem to have been designed for durability or transition but it's been pulled off before by others so it's possible.

that was really depressing. The fit and energetic dancers pretending to drool over her, made her look even more lethargic and inept.

Someone is giving her bad advice. Or she is ignoring good advice. Either way, I don't see her career ever again being what it was. If she put on some clothes, knocked off the hootchie dancing, and stopped flashing, she might have a career in Branson.

I'm not a fan of hers, but she does seem like another "child-star" casualty.

And that's the difference between Britney and Madonna. Madonna tooled, re-tooled, and re-tooled her career over and over and over again. It was always a new look, new moves, new style. She did all of that with a somewhat pedestrian voice.

54. True. And I also think Madonna does a lot of the retooling herself. It doesn't seem
like she just gets thrown from handler to handler. She actually puts in the time.

Not that she doesn't have a million people working for her and helping her, but she seems like she makes her own decisions. Britney seems like she stumbles from place to place, sometimes lucking into a handler that makes her look good and sometimes falling on her face. Actually, lately, USUALLY falling on her face.

56. Madonna might not have the most powerful voice, but..

I think she has a great tone and clarity that sets her apart. Also, she developed more range (compare "Like A Prayer" and "Like A Virgin.")

74. That's so true about Madonna's range.
I've been a huge Madonna fan since I was a little boy, and it has been nice to witness her voice change and mature over the years.

of the old school.

59. I feel sad for her.
She seems like someone who doesn't really care about much in her life - her career, her children or anything.

64. If I were her I'd have ran back out and booted S Silverman in the back
hard enough to launch her off the stage.

62. I read that she bombed but there was no video to prove it.
I now have no doubts.

66. And just a few days ago people were raving about her new song
After last night however would you pay money to see that performance repeated at a concert?

69. The song was so unmemorable and bland.
I have to admit, I like Toxic. It's catchy in a mindless way. However, this new song does not possess the same catchiness that has made some of her other songs a success. I'm not saying they're good. I'm just saying they do have a tendency of sticking in the listener's head.

70. No. I did like the song!
But it didn't look like she was singing it, and she practically had to be handed down from the stage. Lastly, I'm 44 and am in the same physical shape as she is. It isn't pretty.

71. I LOVE This Video and Find It a BRILLIANT (Accidental) Social Commentary
Here's dear Brit, in her sequined bikini, on international television. Lovely girls and gorgeous boys are simulating sex with and/or around her, all the while there's a light show that could induce an epileptic seizure in a Buddhist monk.

And she looks so, so, soooo not into it.

Damn, the girl is making beaucoup dollars to sell empty, commercialized, sex. And there she is, showing the world that maybe it's not the most exciting thing, ever.

77. the really thin 5 inch heel on her boot sure didn't help either
Who's to say the heel in the boot was not ready to fall off at any second. I have some high heels like that, they look great BUT once you put them on the heel is so wobbly. I don't even wear them at all anymore.
