"Ohio"- Damien Jurado
My favorite song of his; his show in Seattle in 2001 was the last I saw in the US before I came up here to Canada. It was a great send-off:

http://recluseshow.blogspot.com/2007/09/ohio-damien-jurado.html

Out from my window across from the city
I have what's considered a good view
Two blocks from the subway, three from the fountain
Where I walk to break in new shoes

She stands on the sidewalk just waving at taxis
Like horses in parades in passing
I ask where she's headed she tells me,
"Ohio, I've not seen my mother in ages
It's been a long time, a real long time."

Out from my window "How far is Ohio?"
She laughed and pointed out east
She said, "I grew up there with my dear mother
And I haven't seen her since thirteen.

You see, I was taken while she lay sleeping
By my father's hired man
We moved to city so far from my family
I haven't been back there since.
It's been a long time, a real long time."

Out from my window please hear me Ohio
Your daughter wants to come home
She longs to be with you to hug you to kiss you
To never leave her alone

And I've gotten know her to live with to love her
It's hard to see her leave
She belongs to her mother and the state of Ohio
I wish she belonged to me

See you sometime, see you sometime....

1. Any song about Ohio gets my attention
listening now - thanks for sharing this song.

Reminds me of my own mom there and Ohio.

5. Sometimes I don't want to be in Ohio and sometimes I do
I was a long haul truck driver for about 4 years. Before I embarked on that journey I was sick of my home and ready to move some place else. I would stay out on the road for months at a time seeing the country. The west was my favorite region and I would always pick up real estate books from out there. Then something weird happened. I wanted to be back in Ohio again. I missed my family and friends and my hometown. Whenever I would come home for time off I really enjoyed myself. So it's Ohio for me.

I still miss the west sometimes. Maybe I'll visit again in the future, but I'll never consider moving there again.

6. I don't know if I'll ever make it back to Ohio
Let alone the US again; Being on a Greyhound crisscrossing the US was such a part of my life for over a decade that like you I saw every bit of the country, except one bus station and flea bag hotel at a time. Though I'm a (relatively speaking, anyway)respectable member of society now, I still think about those endless days and nights being on the road and drinking (and writing) at those SRO hotels and think that in a way, those were the most creative times in my life. But I wouldn't trade my wife for those times again; I'm happy being "retired" from The Road...
