5. I must agree!
The Rueben is THE perfect sandwich.
Especially with a Guinness.

I've actually thought about doing a blog that rates Rueben sandwiches from various places. So far:
First place, chain restaurant category: Culver's.
They get it right. REAL corned beef, real sourkraut, toasted rye bread, very nice. And good fries also. Too bad they cant serve beer.

First place, non-chain restaurant category: Helen Fitzgeralds, South St Louis.
Wow. They just nail it. PERFECT corned beef, excellent dressing, and the Guinness is always cold. Great fries.

Special mention: Hemmingway's, Petoski, Michigan. They do an Asian twist on the Rueben, using corned beef, Thai cabbage, and spicy/sweet Thai salad dressing on marble rye bread. Wow. Fries are only OK, and they dont have Guinness on tap, but their other beers are acceptable.

8. I don't eat many sandwiches
but yeah, there are a few that I will blissfully eat.

Hot pastromi on croissant --Pastromi boiled in water with mustard in it, not fried.
Grilled cheese sandwich with slices of tomato
Lettuce, tomato and mayo on white bread --no bacon, it's usually too salty
Chicken salad on a bulky with tomato and onion --I haven't found an ideal chicken salad, but I think Togos comes closest with almonds and other goodies in it. There are no local Togos though here in Central Mass. I miss them. :(

21. An Italian sandwich
It's not a sub. People who think that's what it means are severely disappointed.
An Italian sandwich is a very localized specialty started by an Italian immigrant in Portland, Maine. He sold it to the dock workers.

The bread used looks like an extra long hot dog roll. The crust is soft, unlike sub rolls. The ingredients in the original are thin layers of provolone or white American cheese and ham, diced onions, thinly sliced green peppers, dill pickles, black olives, and tomatoes, topped with a dose of olive oil and salt and pepper.

So unlike most subs, the bread is merely a wrapper and the meat and cheese volume isn't greater than the veggies. The veggies are stars.

26. There are too many good sandwiches to ever choose a single favorite.
A real Philly cheesesteak always turns my head:

A nice pressed "Cuban", Florida-style:

And a Reuben is always great, even at Waffle house:

And, shameful as it is, I still crave these piles
of McCrap every once in awhile:

Here at home, I like to marinate portabella mushrooms
in italian dressing, then broil them alongside red
bell peppers, and serve on a hoagie roll with the pepper
slices, fresh baby spinach and ranch dressing.

Sorry, no pics of that!

Two thick slices of a good, dense whole wheat bread

Several slices thick, old fashioned ham
A couple of slices of Havorti cheese
Good pesto
Tomato slices
lettuce
A little mayonaise, optional

Lightly toast the bread, place the cheese on the bread, let it melt just a bit
Put the rest of the stuff on it.

Bon appetiti!

42. I love bologna on white, but made a specific way:
First lay the two squares of bread side by side on a cutting board. Slather each slice with good mayonnaise. Then lay a thin line of mustard (French's yellow) from one corner to the opposite. Place an identical stripe on the other piece of bread, then close the two pieces together thereby creating an X of mustard. Replace the two pieces of bread on the cutting board. Cut a thin slice of onion and place that on one piece of the bread. Next add the bologna atop the onion. Grind on lots of pepper. Place tomato slices atop the bologna and shake salt over them. Add lettuce to the stack. Close the sandwich and halve it diagonally. Eat and enjoy. YUM!
