"Go Greek"--Headline of the Year
Fayetteville has a good-size Greek community and, every year, the Greek Orthodox Church has a "Greek Festival" as one of their two fundraisers. (Their other fundraiser is "The World's Biggest Spaghetti Dinner.") Over the years it's grown into Fayetteville's major civic festival--more people go to it than to the Dogwood Festival.

Anyway, it was this past weekend. The paper had this huge writeup on it in the Friday "Weekender" pull-out, where it was the cover story.

The headline was "Go Greek."

Please tell me they didn't know what that means...

6. I've heard about you fraternity boys...
Oh my...I've got to tell you this little customer tail....

This was about two days before Fayetteville State University opened for the fall term. This very large man dressed in a FSU Broncos t-shirt visited my department and asked if I could "shape" a 2x12.

"Shape?"

Yes, shape. He had this 8-foot 2x12 sitting there, and he'd drawn on it a very rough outline of what appeared to be a canoe paddle. "We lost the fraternity's Greek paddle and we need a new one for initiation."

These fucking morans were going to cut a fraternity paddle out of a fucking eight-foot 2x12. Talk about consecrating the bond of obedience! "Thank you sir, may I have another?"

(I sold him a saber saw and a rasp and told him he should have the initiates carve the new paddle themselves. He thought that was a GREAT idea...I was actually joking, that's a bit like having prisoners build the lethal-injection gurney.)

7. Reply #2 notwithstanding...
...I thought that's what the OP was referring to as well. I'm a 26 year-old male, and I've never heard of such a thing (maybe it's before "my time"?).
