Britney still looks hot.
I finally watched and I didn't see the "paunch" that others mentioned... and it's a fucking fact that the person who wrote that article is an asshole. She is in NO WAY out of shape.

1. I agree
I was never near that shape after two kids. Now, after three? Fuggedaboutit.

I don't think her routine was very good and I never cared for her singing, but to say she is fat, chunky, or out of shape (unless we are talking being limber or dancing quality) is just mean spirited and incorrect.

I think people get too much joy and self-satisfaction out of dissing celebrities.

but to say she's out of shape, or trash talk her figure even gently... it's just delusional.

And she still has a beautiful body.

Not the best dance performance, but a beautiful body all the same. Marlyn Monroe wished she had that body.

I honestly didn't get the body part of the critique.

But obviously (naturally!) she looks different now after 2 kids. Looks like she's in great shape. But those who insist that "hot woman" = "built like a 12-year-old boy" are gonna call her fat in comparison. It sucks, but it's the cost of a life in showbiz.

Look where her rear meets her pants. There's a big gap. Same for right below it with the thigh. It's actually retouched very, very badly in that image.

30. See, I didn't read it as meaning fat or flabby
I read it as meaning athletically. She was not in shape to do the dancing that she was trying to do and that's how I read it. Admittedly, I only saw the part of the article that was quoted here but from the video, she did look like she was not in shape as far as being able to perform well.

Since 90% of what Britney is selling is based on dance moves, thats something she needs to get right. My humble opinion.

32. Well, I did miss that quote
But really, so what? Like I said, the girl is a dancer - more so than a singer or anything else really. She SHOULD be in shape to perform and to dance well, you do need a "taut frame."

I'm not into the whole "women need to be rail-thin and perfect" shit but if someone is putting themself out there as a dancer and gets a lot of money to do it, they should respect their audience enough to be in the proper shape to do it.

Honestly, I think Britney is pretty pathetic anyway and always have, and I wish she'd just skip the trip down and go directly to the "where are they now" section of the overrated celebrity pantheon.

I don't know any professional dancers who aren't, do you? It's not, in this case, about propogating the "all women must be skinny" cultural thing, it's that to move your body around the way dancers do, you need to be extremely toned and extremely fit. It's the nature of the profession.

two-week starvation diet weighed 145 lbs. She was one of the two guest dancers at a southern city ballet.

A good friend of mine was in the southern city ballet company and she was laughing after the perfromance because the lead male dancer (also a guest) audiably went "oof!" when he picked her up in a lift...

38. Oh, redqueen, I'm not really trying to argue with you
I didn't see it saying "rail-thin" anywhere either. Dancers have to be in good physical shape. Professional dancers who make a ton of money doing it have to be in excellent shape. "Taut" to me doesn't mean "rail-thin" - it means strong. I just didn't see her as being in top physical shape in that video - not because of any flab or excess weight but because she didn't look like she was able to keep up or put any energy into it.

I don't know why I'm putting all this energy into replying - I don't want to argue with you, I don't mean to defend those who put women down based on unreal expectations of weight, I don't give a rat's ass about Britney and I like you too much to turn this into a silly argument.

42. There's a BIG difference between normal women and celebrities whose only skill is looking good.
For a normal woman on the street she would be in great shape and gorgeous by any measure, but she is not a normal woman.

Normal women do not make a multi-million dollar career because of their beauty in an industry that is supposed to be based on talent.

Normal women do not have personal trainers and all the time in the world to work with them.

Normal women do not have nutritionists to prepare meals for them to ensure they never gain weight.

Normal women do not have a wardrobe dept. working for them the find outfits that flaunt their best assets.

Normal women don't resurrect their careers by "dancing" in front on millions.

I think it is perfectly fair to hold her to a higher standard. If you make your career on your looks you better take care of them.

Not only do I think she looks great, even for a celebrity that you perceive as having 'made their career on their looks'.

But also I think it's somewhat twisted to differentiate between 'normal' women and other women that other people get to point to and say "you MUST look like this".

50. No
It's not hot to appear drugged out and going through the motions of a mediocre performance. She clearly needs help, and whoever the hell advised her to make this "comeback" right now is a real asshole and an idiot.

Fan of her music or not, she knew how to project charisma and energy when she was on stage five years ago. She showed none of that last night. I suspect if she had, most people would overlook her choice of attire.

This "You Go Girl" sort of cheerleading helps nothing. Her body is the least of her problems. It's like watching Elvis circa 1977, a broken down soul vainly trying to hold on to the spotlight while battling demons. The difference was Elvis had enough talent in the first place to make it watchable and get away with looking out of it.

And fuck MTV for setting up the train wreck and letting, of all people, Sarah Silverman come out right after to stick the knife in and comment on it. They got the pound of flesh they wanted out of that.

Seems like people can't get enough of talking about that outfit.

She is PRODUCT...and the product is no longer up to spec

77. That's, IMNSHO, a very sick opinion.
You might want to read about misogyny and reconsider what you've just said.

87. And yours is either an ignorant or disingenuous opinion
Do you honestly think that she was EVER sold on the basis of her (non-existent) vocal talents?
She was merely product that was rolled out as a "hot-to-trot Lolita" Now, she is a bit long in the tooth (and thick in the middle) for that particular schtick.

89. "nymphette/fucktoy"
Get back to me when you understand why that's fucked up.

As for her talents, or how she's marketed, that has nothing to do with you acting as if women who flaunt their sexuality deserve to be dehumanized.

93. Oh, I certainly agree that is wrong , but I am NOT the one(s) who marketed...
her in that way.
Her handlers, record company, parents, and Ms Spears herself decided that she would be dehumanized by being marketed in such a way.
Frankly, I could care less about Britney Spears the product or the human being.

94. No... she was marketed as a sexy singer.
YOU choose to spin it as that meaning she's dehumanized, so you're free to use whatever sexist slurs you LIKE.

And I'm really not surprised to hear you care little about her as a human being. No need to dig the hole any further, really... I get you.

96. If you only want opinions that AGREE with you...
perhaps you should have stated so in your original post.
Sorry, but it's not my problem that you are seemingly a slack-jawed yahoo who feels that celebrities such as Spears really have any more dimension than to be anything more than diversions for slack-jawed yahoos. Briney and her management thank you.

She was marketed as nothing more than a "sexist slur"

But thanks for bashing her parental skills again.

Jesus christ... can people really not understand why I started this thread? I'm not a fucking Britney fan, and I'm not trying to be an apologist for her parenting skills, her wardrobe choices, her lifestyle choices, or anything else.

I'm JUST saying SHE IS NOT OUT OF SHAPE.

Fuckin hell.

82. Yeah, she really is.
She isn't FAT. But she's flabby, her muscle tone is lacking, and it is an obvious physical effort to move her body, as plainly evidenced on the video.

I'm not really sure why you're defending her. Is it threatening to you, on the level of "Man, if SHE's out of shape, what does that make ME?" I KNOW I'm out of shape, and more so than she is. But that doesn't prevent me from looking at her and making a dispassionate observation that she is most certainly out of shape. Why does it upset you?

83. It makes me sick - the idea that women have to look like underwear models
to be considered "in shape".

Was she in a horrible outfit? Yes.

Is she out of shape? Hell no, not by my standards. Guess yours are different.

84. Or maybe our definitions are different.
Not too long ago, I weighed 120 pounds (no more! Add 10 to that, eek!). And when I weight 120 pounds, I was built basically like Britney is now. I didn't work out, but I was thin. Quite thin - I wore a 2. But I had very little muscle tone and very little energy for physical exertion. No one in the world would have called me fat. But I was definitely out of shape (and now even more so!).

I know a woman who runs marathons. She's Phillipino and naturally very short and puts on weight easily. She's about 6 inches shorter than I am, and weighs about 20 pounds more. Some people might call her fat, certainly pudgy. But she is in AWESOME shape. Her cardiovascular system is strong as an ox, her legs will carry her for days, and she feels great and her energy levels reflects that.

Knowwhatimean?

86. Yeah... but that's not what the reviewer meant
when he compared being embarassingly out of shape to her formerly "taut" body.

And that's not what other critics have meant, when they have talked about her "paunch".

So yeah, maybe she's not physically fit. But check the thread. People actually think she's FAT... that's what I don't get.

58. I checked out her video
She looks lovely. She is not fat at all. Just perfect and sexy. I was disgusted at TMZ.com where they say on her: Fat Lady Sings!

Her performance was not very good, but not too bad. I know she can do much much better. She dances so well in the past. I know an excellent dancer when I see one, believe me. She dances very very well so she was not herself that night.

59. She looked great.
Until you looked into her eyes - then it got scary.

But the bod's fine - she's a heck of a lot thinner than most Americans. And, I like seeing a young female in Hollywood that doesn't have the body of an 8-year old boy.

68. Eh.
I never thought I'd have the same stomach as Britney. Guess I do now!

She's not out of shape, she looks like any other girl who doesn't really tone up her stomach. Her legs still look better than mine. But the performance was terrible and it was a combination of things that kinda lead to the vitrol of that article. It didn't even appear as though she'd worked even the slightest bit on the performance.

85. Not so much fat as flabby
and not so much paunchy as pouchy--a normal side effect of recent childbirth. If she'd actually rehearsed as much as her dancers had, she would have looked fine and not as if she'd wandered onstage by mistake.

MTV picked her for the opening act because right now it's a hot trend to put people up on stage for ridicule. They knew she would bomb, because anyone who even halfway follows entertainment knows she's been a wreck ever since she married K-fed and had babies. The rehab, shaving her head, showing up for the OK Magazine shoot a total wreck, the half naked pics, the lack of any real career. MTV knew exactly what they were doing. Everyone, be sure to tune in and laugh at the pathetic no talent up on the stage, a la American Idol. Now's your chance to see exactly how far she's fallen. And now everyone is abuzz about it, and MTV is getting all kinds of publicity. I watched the video, and I couldn't finish it. I actually feel sorry for her. Edited to change Idle to Idol. I know the difference in the two words, but for some reason I always type that.

95. I feel sorry for the girl, where in the hell is her support system?
she was obviously madly in love with her husband, I don't understand why they got divorced, it really messed her up. She made some young stupid mistakes and I'm not referring to her kids but I will admit I don't understand why she squeezed one right out after the other but hey thats her deal. It has affected her physique a little, that can happen when you have kids. But unfortunately it has affected her in many other ways. Her psyche is so out of whack, I hope she gets better. She needs to get out of the limelight for a while and just grow as a person. Demi Moore dropped out of the limelight for a while for different reasons and WOW look what a little R&R did for her, it just took her to a whole other level.
