I don't care if he picked it up from Soweto style.

The Rolling Stones picked up their style from American Blues Greats. They're still great.

1. I agree with you 110%!!
I love Johnny Marr's playing...absolutely amazing!

Have you seen the Noel Gallagher interview on Youtube where he is talking about the Smiths? He is quite a fan and is a huge Johnny Marr fan. It's pretty funny.

2. Oh hell yes!!!
:toast:

He is fabulously talented. And, there was an article in our local paper the other day saying that he is playing with Modest Mouse and has spent time in Portland. The article made it seem like he might relocate here permanently. If I ever see him here in Stumptown, I'm going to throw rose petals at his feet and bow down to him.

For his riff in "Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before" alone he should be knighted.

8. Some of my favorite guitar playing of his is the Talking Heads' song,
"(Nothing But) Flowers". Also, the intro to "This Charming Man" and of course, "How Soon Is Now".

14. "How Soon Is Now" has got to be one of my top-three favorite songs. Ever.
I've loved it since I first heard it way back in the day, and I never get tired of that hypnotic, shimmering melody.

Didn't know Marr played on (Nothing But) Flowers. My husband is a huge Talking Heads fan, so I'll tell him. BTW, the lyrics to that song always crack me up.

19. If you watch the video for (Nothing But) Flowers on You Tube, you
will see Johnny Marr playing a Rickenbacher guitar. He is amazing.

4. He's my personal 3rd favorite of all time, 2nd only to George Harrison & Peter Buck
Love me some jangly 12-string.

The Smiths combined gloomy lyrics with sublime musicianship esp. Mr. Marr.

9. Peter Buck and George Harrison are two of my favorites, as well.
Also Robert Buck of 10,000 Maniacs (RIP, Robert) and Joey Santiago from the Pixies.

5. Not just of the 1980s my friend. He's still great.
And I love that he has now hooked up with my favorite performer of all-time, Neil Finn, for a few projects. Two members of my two favorite bands ever in one room would be enough to make my head explode.

17. Thanks Oregonian! Although I have no idea why.
Unless you're a big Smiths and Crowded House fan too. In which case you have EXCELLENT taste. :hi:

18. Yes -- I love the Smiths!
I like Crowded House, although I must admit I never owned anything they did other than one cassette tape -- the album with "Don't Dream It's Over."

I'll think of you when I'm doing my workout to "What Difference Does It Make" :hi:

20. Considering our earlier discussion about weight loss, that's a highly
appropriate song choice. LOL!

The Smiths are only second to Crowded House in my heart. So a few years back when Neil Finn called up Johnny Marr to do a project with him (Neil's son is a Smiths fan), I was in heaven. Neil ended up doing a great version of "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" for a benefit concert. Since then, Johnny has made some writing and guitar contributions to the latest CH album.

Now Johnny and Neil are good friends and have a standing invitation whenever either of them is on tour that the other can join them onstage. I think I would absolutely pass out if Johnny Marr walked out on stage at a Crowded House show.

21. That is cool! I love it when the greats collaborate.
If I see Johnny Marr here in Portland (where he might relocate to 'cuz he's playing with Portland-based Modest Mouse) I'll yell out: "grace0418 sends her regards! Say Hi to the Finns!" :)

22. Lucky you! And lucky Johnny!
I love Portland. I'd move there in a heartbeat. It's on my short list of places I want to move. I bet if he was already living there he probably would've joined CH on stage a week or so ago.

I am so glad that people recognize how amazing the Smiths are. Their albums hold up to the test of time so well. The lyrics, the melody, the guitar, the bass, all absolutely top notch.

16. One of the best EVER
His work on "How Soon Is Now" stands by itself as a testament to that.

And I think Andy Rourke is a terrific bassist, too.

DON'T GET ME STARTED ON MY MORRISSEY!
