My refrigerator died today.
Edited on Mon Sep-10-07 07:25 PM by ThomCat
I can only go shopping when I have help. This weekend InfoManiac (bless her heart) helped me go shopping. So my fridge is full. Today it decided to die.

I'm in an apartment, and the building is responsible for replacing the refridgerator. But it might be two days.

x(

I am not having a good day. Please send me some cheerful vibes. I am trying very hard not to fall into a bad mood about this. :(

Edit to add: Today is the 15th aniversary of the accident that permanently ruined my knees and back. Yay. What a day.

14. All my local friends have gradually moved away.
Even the friends who only moved to Queens are still 2 hours away. :(

There's very little I can save. Damn.

I'm sorry you went thorough this, and I certainly wish I wasn't going through it now.

3. somebody else here lost their fridge recently
bummer - can you maneuver well enough to cover it with some blankets or something - to add to the insulation. Also tape the door seals as that is where a lot of cool will leak out.

Maybe you need to have your dinner party immediatly to use up all that food;) (sorry)

and it's now firmly closed. That may help with some stuff.

I'm very, very, glad the dinner party is 4 weeks away. I'm being having a heart attack right now if the dinner party was this coming weekend. :P

18. There wasn't much hope of me having a good day today anyway.
So I suppose it's just as well that the fridge broke down today. Sometimes random bad luck can be pretty damned efficient. :P

This just means I'll get the bad luck out of the way, and have good luck for a while.

I just try to remind myself that such conveniences were unheard of a few generations ago in America and still unheard of in much of the world today.

My grandpa lived half his life without hot water on demand, so I guess I can take it for two weeks.

12. Aw crap. I wish that I was close enough to help too.
As a distraction, let me tell you about my refrigerator failure. While I was out of town on a three day business trip my ancient but reliable fridge decided to go arctic. When I came home it was still running but everything inside looked like something from a science fiction movie. Absolutely everything was coated with about an inch of ice. Beer bottles had popped off their caps and frozen beer ooze was all over the place. Most formerly fresh veggies were black pools of goo. It was sumthin' to see.

I'm sorry that yours failed at just this time on a day with so many bad memories to begin with. As much as possible leave the refrigerator closed. With luck your freezer items will be salvageable as well as the less fussy fridge stuff like condiments, fruits, and nonleafy veggies. Best of luck, Thomcat.

hugs to you, friend.

Still lost everything and had a sizeable unplanned expanse, but otherwise it was no bother because I could get to a discount appliance store with one bus ride and I lived close to a supermarket.

It's much more trouble for you to deal with yours.

26. is there a liquor store that would deliver some ice?
Fill up the bathtub with bags of ice, and put your stuff in (inside plastic bags) and cover with a sheet and blanket? I'm sorry if that's an impossible suggestion. I know how it feels to have people make stupid suggestions for desperate problems.

In some towns, taxis will go to liquor stores and then deliver the order.

They have ice. But they only make deliveries on Saturdays. :P

If I had some help, that's exactly what I was going to try. But alone on crutches, hauling ice isn't an option. So, I am accepting the loss.

I lost power for 11 days during an ice storm. I lost everything in the refrigerator and a separate freezer. Cleaning out the freezer was a nightmare. It had was a chest type and there was a foot of rotten, liguid stench in the bottom. Tons of newspaper and bleach sop it up and clean it out. :(

Wish you had some help.

57. landlords suck
would they reimburse you for the cost of the lost food? They should.

Now a story that I hope will amuse you -- 7 years ago when my ex and I split he took our refrigerator. The house he bought already had one so he stuck ours in the garage. Well, he didn't realize that the outlet in the garage was on a switch and the refrigerator got shut off. With stuff in it. Yeah, that was 7 years ago and said fridge is still sitting in his garage because he's afraid to open it up and find out what new forms of life have been created. I have to admit that there's a small part of me that, even knowing I'd be totally repulsed, wants to see the grossness that's inside there. I think he should call Geraldo and they can do an expose special on what they find when they unseal the fridge. You never know, there might some new form of life in there by now.

Anyway, to you Thom
