Post something about yourself that will make half the lounge hate you.
I'll start: I think poetry in almost all its forms sucks ass, and is written by people that think they are a lot deeper than they really are.

I also think evolutionary psychology gets a lot more things right than people give it credit for.

Flame away!!! :nuke: :hi: :nuke:

180. Olive Garden is a casual dining American restaurant chain specializing in Italian food.
It bills itself as a traditional family restaurant with Old World-inspired dishes. Founded in 1982 in Orlando, Florida, there are presently 611 Olive Garden locations throughout the United States and Canada.

181. the Olive (Olea europaea) is a species of small tree in the family Oleaceae
native to coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean region, from Lebanon and the maritime parts of Asia Minor and northern Iran at the south end of the Caspian Sea. Its fruit, the olive, is of major agricultural importance in the Mediterranean region as the source of olive oil.

323. OK, this will tick everyone off!!!!
I used to work for General Mills in the restaurant division, which was Red Lobster and some other chains. I was there when they did the prototype and focus group testing for the Olive Garden concept. Being a corporate yes person, I told them I thought the concept was a slam dunk.

No seriously, I told them I thought it was the stupidest effing idea I'd ever heard. I said "Did you people learn anything when you went into Boston and tried to sell southern lobsters?" The freaking morons nearly had their Red Lobster restaurants bombed for that (they had to shut them down periodically because of bomb threats--Bostonians take their lobster seriously). Finally they just got the hell out of dodge but not after dumping millions down the drain in promo.

Seriously guys--I tried to stop it. I just wasn't successful.

not sure why that is, exactly. Perhaps the national chain craze is a midwestern thing?

We have TONS of little restaurants around us (Ventura Blvd is somewhat notorious), but the nearest chain (outside of some fast-food and California-based chains like CPK and Cheesecake), is in Burbank, which is a good 20 minute drive.

No anthropomorphizing. No creating an extended family. And no, I won't bust out my credit cards for emergency surgery. I will admit that the dogs and cats sleep on the bed but draw the line at the ponies.....

On the other hand, I have a LOT of pets - like 50 or more at any given time (most of them horses) so do I get a break?? The average successful surgery rate for a performance horse is so dismal at this stage it's just horrifying (think Barbaro).

My cats are animals and I know that but I also know they have love for me and they have little souls. I respect animals' souls because none of their species are trashing the physical future like mine, the Humans.

220. I weigh 110.
I eat whatever the fuck I want, and I never think about it. I have no idea how many calories are in what I eat because I've never needed to care. No matter how much I eat, though, it never seems to be enough to actually put on any damn weight, which I probably could stand to. Also, I don't have any food allergies or intolerances or any of that. Sometimes I even wonder if that stuff is for real. I never even heard of "lactose intolerance" until I met someone when I was TWENTY-EIGHT who claimed to have it. (I think it's because he was too much of a cheapskate to buy real half-and-half for the office coffee.)

Also, I think babies are fugly and unpleasant-smelling and kind of repulsive on the whole, and I've never felt any desire to hold one or coo over it. I've done that, but only out of social obligation. It wasn't an emotional experience of any kind - it just kind of lay there until I handed it back, which I did as soon as possible.

Also, I smoke. I have no real desire to quit. And if I ever do, it'll probably be about the money.

There, that should do it. :)

as for Olive Garden, well I used to take my Grandmother there because it was a good compromise between perfectly edible food and the predictability that older folks often need. Now would I choose to go there if I was visiting New York city or some other place noted for authentic regional food? probably not, but pressed for time and with a coupon in a town I am overly familiar with? sure (not sure if they do coupons, but you get the point)

when meat-eaters act like martyrs because they eat meat. I mean, come on, they're like 95% of the population. It's like the "War on Christmas!!11!," only more egregious.

I'm sorry.

(But it's still funny.)

Other than an insane belief that one person can change the world, it was an attempt by a drunken hillbilly to thwart the enemy at every opportunity.

I just did it to try to mess up their primaries and polling. I realized after many years that I made no difference.

83. I've had thoughts of being purposely mean to women...
Women always say they want someone who'll treat them right, but then go with people who treat them like dirt. Nice guys and girls really don't stand a chance. I've had thoughts of being purposely mean and cruel to a woman I like just to see if the outcome would be different. I've never done that though. I just can't seem to make myself be mean to women, but I have noticed that women like the ones who treat them cruelly.

245. Satire, no.
I have really thought about purposely doing just that, because the women I like see me as dirt under their feet, usually. It's a proportional thing. The more I like a woman and the nicer I am to her, the more she hates me. So, yeah, just to catch a break, I have honestly thought about trying just that to see if I could actually please a woman I like better. I shit you not. }(

I work in biomedical research. I'm a vet tech. Guess what I work with? That right ladies and gentleman, I work on lab animals!

I love to eat meat.

I dislike Hillary Clinton (shit, Big Dawg ain't my fav either), Cindy Sheehan, and John Edwards.

I smoked when I was pregnant.

I breastfed, in public, at restaurants, in the mall, on the bus. Kid hungry? I popped a tit in her mouth.

I own a pit bull.

I get really annoyed with whiny people (I have a 6 year old girl, that's enough whining to have to deal with).

Oh yeah, I like porn, especially kinky BDSM stuff!

That should do it.

Edited on Tue Sep-11-07 08:08 AM by benEzra
I think poetry in almost all its forms sucks ass, and is written by people that think they are a lot deeper than they really are.

Hey, I like poetry!

For fellow lit geeks, my screen name is from a Robert Browning poem that Isaac Asimov quoted in Pebble in the Sky about Abraham ben Meir ibn Ezra (1092-1167).

Post something about yourself that will make half the lounge hate you.

I like poetry? :)

Also, I own an "AK-47", and I'm keeping it.

No, that's not a real NFA Title 2/Class III restricted AK-47; it's a non-automatic, civilian-only derivative (2002 model SAR-1). The optic is a Russian Kobra.

However, my bonus (instead of step) grandson, age 18, is a loving, helpful and industrious child. He's visiting us from Boston this week, and is visiting two Oregon colleges. He wants to get away from his parents for a while (what 18-year-old doesn't?) and he just might do a year of school out west.

This is his father's -- my stepson's -- birthday (Sept. 11) and I hope he celebrates it in peace. We ended up sending him a birthday card and a money gift.

214. I really, really don't like major mentally deficient people.
Edited on Tue Sep-11-07 04:47 PM by seawolf
I'd be in favor of doing mandatory in-utero testing + abortions for things like Downs Syndrome, so long as it was understood that it could not set a precedent for testing + abortions for any other reason.

I can feel some degree of sympathy for autistic people - that's undetectable until after birth, as best I know, and it tends to vary. Some of them are fine people, some of them (like that guy in Texas who killed his baby sister) are horrible, a lot of them are in between. I knew a guy in high school who I think was mildly autistic, and he was a great dude. Eager to learn, just not too bright.

Asperger's is no problem -- that's mental illness, not deficiency.

I'm so violently against it because I have kind of a creeping horror of how genetics could have hosed me.

And given what assholes children are to anyone who's different, it might be more merciful than putting a mentally deficient kid through 12 years of public school hell.

With mandatory national service for all the CO's and overflow the military cannot place. Not enough snot nosed rich white kids putting their asses on the line. Males and females 18-20. I think it would 1) discourage wars of aggression and 2) provide a common experience which would make us a stronger and more united nation (in a generation or so). Penalties for non-participation could include loss of voting rights and permanent barring from holding elected office or obtaining federal employment.

235. I have naturally curly hair, but not too frizzy.
I wash it every night in the shower, and if I don't comb it thru, it dries in ringlets.

I can roll it up on hot rollers and it looks great.

It's really thick. So much so that I can't let it get past shoulder length, it gets too heavy and hard to wash.

Ironic note:My mom gave me gawdawful stinky perms when I was little cuz she wanted me to look like Shirley Temple. I finally got a good hair cut at a good salon when I was 19 and found out I had naturally wavy hair anyway. She could have gotten a clue had she noticed that both she and Dad had wavy hair --duh!!

Ironic note #2: I once had a girlfriend with straight long baby fine hair. Then i got a nice boyfriend. She quit calling me and refused to answer the phone, after I got a nice boyfriend. I guess curly thick hair and a nice boyfriend were too much for her to handle.

Yup I do, my husband already knows that if the house caught of fire, he better save himself because I am going in for the furry kids.

My belief is that pets have a lot less choice and control over their surroundings then the people who own them, so they should be treated better

254. I think that religion has caused most of our world's
ills. I mean, sure, some of the wars that have been fought and some of the horrible shit that has been done in the name of religion may still have happened without the existence of religion (as a rule people suck), but that doesn't included the crusades or 911 (the terrorists were religious too).

Religion sucks, and people suck. Perhaps if one wasn't the case the other wouldn't be either, but it is a fact about today's society. That's what I think, and I don't really care what you think.

Why not just good people and bad people?

If I'm a good person, I am not a good person because I believe in God. Neither am I a good person despite it. I am only a good person if my own personal qualities make me so. This idea that religion is evil is just as lazy as the idea that faith is of itself a virtue. I will have no truck with it. People fight because they have that tendency: they will differentiate between "themselves" and the "other." If they can define the "other" by means of religion then they will, but if religion isn't handy then they'll find some other reason to do it.

It's crap like this that makes me wonder why I stay here. On the same page I'll read about how religion is evil, and the poster cares not how many religious people they offend. Some of my favourite people from here are very religious. RevCheesehead? AirmensMom? Oh, they never post here any more... I wonder why? And on another page I will read somebody say how they hate a person they've never met because they're a Republican. Really. So much for open minds. So much for tolerance.

296. No
I did not mention individual people at all. I only referred to religion as an institution. My mother is a very spiritual person who is heavily involved in her church. I love her dearly though I may disagree with her beliefs. I never paint with that broad a brush. But I don't understand the offense because I agree that religion is the basis for most wars in history. Is this not a true statement? If not, please show me the error in my thinking.

I hate no one, btw. Like I said in my pm to you, I fully concede to religious ignorance. If this is enough for you to throw me into the perceived pile of closed minded intolerant people, well then...what can I say? Either have a rational discussion with me on the matter or don't.

I love you either way.

NOT when mistakes are made, okay!!! And I think we need to work harder at police work and prosecution so we can be sure.

I have no holy god-like beliefs about Humans' souls. When someone is actually & without a doubt a violent criminal then I think the world can do just fine without another idiotic destructive humanoid breathing MY air :hi: and their ends can be smooth and painless I think!

Pot is okay, but vastly overrated.

I own a Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (incorrectly called a 'Confederate Flag'), since I have both southern heritage and am a student of history.

I own stocks (I like to be in charge of my investments, rather than paying someone else to do it, or paying through my employer).

99% of hipper-than-thou indie rock/alternative whatchacallit is unmitigated, sloppy, pretentious, whiny punk-ass bullshit, made by and for socially retarded (and 50%+ will hate me for using that word) asswipes, and is easily as bad and subject to well-deserved satirical derision as the corporate rock for which it is supposedly anathema.

I am all in favor of poetry, but leave it to the professionals. Most DUers should not try it at home.

I agree with you 100% on poets and poetry. Most poets suck ass, and need a (short) haircut, shave and a shower.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Olive Garden. (WTF is with all this anti-Olive Garden stuff anyway??? :wtf:)

I like guns.

I eat meat and wear leather.

EDIT: Oh yeah, FUCK the 49ers, and FUCK all 49ers fans. Especially FUCK all the ones living in Texas. Did I say FUCK THE 49ers???? :puke: :nuke:

284. I'm an English teacher who thinks most poetry sucks ass. Poetry'd be better if still rhymed.
Most modern poetry is written by pretentious fucks and "sucks ass." Poetry'd be better if it still rhymed. At least then it would combine the challenge of coming up with new ways to say the same old shit with Sudoku.

Have you tried writing a decent sonnet lately? Difficult. ABAB, CDCD, EFEF. GG. Now stick that sonofabitch in iambic pentameter. The opposite of free/blank verse.

Have you tried writing in free/blank verse lately? I'm sure your ninth-grade English teacher appreciated it, but I've got a chihuahua that could have written that poem by pissing on random labeled tiles. It was great when Ginsberg did it, because he was the first, but everyone else is just a wannabe.

Oh, and your ninth-grade English teacher was lying to you.

293. I hate people who are educated properly.
There seems to be a standardization on what people should know, and I'd rather meet people with different grasp on life. The public school system seems to reinforce this while at the same time, dumbing down our civilization through forcing kids to do so many things they don't want to do that they hate the prospect of learning something new.
