ZOMG-- Man vs Wild comedy: The Sierra Nevada
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phyW0B_MrwI&mode=related&search=

I like how he's up above the timberline then suddenly he's down in the gray pine then he's back up in the firs. Good times.

3. Upon further research,
this episode in particular has many, many staged elements. The horses were brought in for the show, and he spent his nights at the cozy Pines Resort at Bass Lake. :P

This episode had some... problems... that were apparent to anyone familiar with the area.

11. His funniest episode was the Rocky Mountains
It turns out that he had one of his crew dress up in a bear costume to attack his camp at night.

http://www.daughtersoftiresias.org/bearwiki/Hired_man_in_a_bear_suit_because_they_couldn%27t_find_a_tame_bear_for_the_shoot

Bear's advice was to run away which is never a good idea with any bear as it will likely trigger a chase. Then he says that the bear is playing mind games with him so he throws himself over a 70' cliff into a river in order to "break his scent trail."

Grrrrrrrrrr!

12. I watched all five of them, including the guy eating random conifer needles and stuff....
Unless he has a good botanist on staff he is not long for this world. I certainly hope no one is following his advice.

6. i always thought those shows were somewhat fake
plus they never give practical advice on how to survive. The guys on the show are always traversing difficult if not extremely dangerous terrain and doing things that just look too impractical or dangerous to be used by the common person. (i guess to make for good tv)

There's an old book called How to Survive In the Wilderness that goes through a lot of what you will need to survive on your own. You can get it at a used book store for like $5. It's way better than any of these shows.

8. Bradford Angier?
How to Stay Alive in the Woods?

That book is one of about 20 non-work, non-birding books I brought with me when I moved. :D

10. U.S. Army Field Manual, No. 21-76, Survival
Online for free (your tax dollars paid for it):
http://www.basegear.com/fm2176.html

More manuals can be found here:
http://www.southamptonalumni.com/freeware101/survivalmanuals/survival

I couldn't care less that he stays in hotels and fakes scenes:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6911748.stm

The larger concern is that much of his so-called advice is truly horrible:
http://www.daughtersoftiresias.org/bearwiki/Bad_Advice_and_Inaccuracies

Survivorman might not be as exciting but at least Stroud's advice is sound for the most part. His shelters are generally inadequate but given that he's alone and has to film himself, well there are only so many hours in a day.

15. Good links....
One of the things I was particularly amused by is he's in the low Sierras, and he's eating manzanita berries. He must have just gone right past all the elderberries, acorn oaks, wild grapes, and gray pines there.

(Gray pines have MASSIVE edible nuts that are teh yummy right out of the cone.)
