What is your boring hobby?
Mine seems to be lately, Texas Holdem Poker, but I still like it. It's just the waiting part of the game that BORES the hell out of me.. Do you see those folks in WSOP listening to music, reading a book, just doing anything just to keep them from being bored.

2. I read
Everything, from Plato to Fitzgerald. I'm the kind of person who gets excited when I find a translation of the Iliad I've not read before.

And if that isn't boring enough, I hybridize roses. That will put a person to sleep. :P

13. Conserving and preserving
Museum items, repackaging and storing them.

I currently volunteer at a local museum and I love it. The people there give me those jobs because they know I like it! I think it's really cool to unwrap all that old tissue paper to see what's been packaged. I've found some fascinating items.

The most ponging would be all the soap I had unpacked... whew... talk about smelling old soap. It's really weird what people keep and give to the museum (my poor co-worker had to deal with 40 years worth of receipts that someone had donated to the museum).

It's fun though.

Although I'm not sure how long that'll last... out of the five core players in the group I usually play with, two are moving at the end of the month.
Mostly I like to make stuff. So I spend most of my time thinking about nifty things I could make, and occasionally I'll actully get around to doing it. :)

Once in a great while we do use the expansion pack for an all-weekend marathon session. I'm not sure if it's the same ex. pack you're referring to-- this one has a gloss-paper map about twice the size of the original board with much more subdivision of territory, and new unit pieces (Marines, S.S., etc.).

Thanks for the link! :hi:

Lot's of sitting and waiting, or standing and waiting for that matter. Plus, I wish I lived somewhere better-suited to do a lot of watching with more train traffic and a good place to watch. Boring to many but I love it. Also like plane-watching too. I could always venture up to the Cities for both but it'd be nice if something were closer than 2 hours away.

40. researching and building copies of Roman military equipment
Cutting and filing away at bits of wood and metal sheeting, reading big thick archeological books and academic papers, straining to decipher details on blurry old photographs that might give some clue about how the stuff was put together ... yeah, it can take a lot of time, where not much is happening. And don't get me started on making chain mail!

48. That's cool
The more I learn about ancient armor and weaponry, the more I appreciate it. I'm an amateur blacksmith yet I have no desire to attempt any reproduction work because of the complexity of the whole thing. Now, a trebuchet, that is something else entirely, and I would attempt one with great enthusiasm as I'm a professional woodworker. All I need is a client.

I think chain mail is a snap these days, and you can buy it mail order. Welding individual links with a forge is another story.

53. that's the problem with mail, isn't it ...
The butted type is fairly easy -- mind-numbingly tedious (almost hypnotic) -- you can even buy ready-cut rings these days (I used to have to wind my own). And some people have started selling rings that are already flattened and punched to allow riveting. If you alternate these rings with ones that are stamped, like washers (supposedly the authentic way, for Roman-type armour), the results can be pretty good, even if you don't have a forge.

46. maybe Scrabble
Maybe it's a hobby but it's probably really something crazy or neurotic. I don't play Scrabble/Literati that often anymore but I still think about letters all day, like everywhere I go I find the letters, like on signs or cars or wherever, and start making all the words I can with them. Sometimes when I'm with people I'll just start thinking about making words with the things they're saying and then I'll zone out  I bet I dream about Scrabble.

Edited on Tue Sep-11-07 10:15 PM by Drum
At first it was just a few bills from the (many) countries visited when I toured more internationally. Since I don't do that as much nowadays, friends sometimes bring back notes for my collection. I'm glad that in the '90s I visited a lot of European countries, since I never imagined a Euro that would replace so many currencies....

As a hobby goes, it's my most periodic, passive, boring.

But I like 'em :)
