I cannot convince Mr. DTBK to get a third cat
He sat and watched me very impassively while I bawled over our late Simba last night. I miss that little guy jumping up on my lap and sleeping next to me. I love Monty and Morrissey to pieces, but neither of them are lap cats and are pretty independent. Mr. DTBK seems not to be ready for another cat, although we lived with three cats for two years and used to live with four cats for many years. I think he's finally gotten to his optimal number, which is not mine - mine is around, oh, 10 or so, if I could. It's very distressing. My sister is envious because she can't have any cats at all right now, and I know should appreciate the ones we have (and I DO, believe me) - I just need a lap cat, and Simba is gone.

 :banghead:

4. So sorry.
I know what you mean. We have two cats that have had health issues lately and my SO always says after they go that's it. No more cats. I look at him like he's nuts. I will never live in a house w/out cats.

If you're willing to pay extra for multi-cat litter that cuts down on the odor, and do the extra work changing the litter boxes on a timely basis, it'd be fine. Kitties are wonderful, but the degree of smell associated with multiple cats puts my limit at 1 or 2.

My mother was always too cheap to pay for the good kind of litter (even with 3 or 4 cats), and too lazy to change the litter boxes until they were absolutely saturated with cat piss, so the house always reeked of urine. The smell would soak into clothes, furniture, the walls, etc...

If you're willing to do the extra work, I don't see any problem with getting another cat. If not, it's not reasonable to expect your husband to consent to another kitty, because the smell starts significantly increasing after 2 cats.
