"Depth of Innocence"
I went to my son one night. It was a swimming night, I told him. We put on our suits and went outside. The sharp wind punnished our bodies as I led him through the tall, bladed grass.
When we reached the bank, I bade him put his hand in the cool. After removing his hand he questioned how to get in. In reply I said, You must find your own way. But I warned him, do not jump in. Find the depth and then you may jump.
I watched his foot search in the calm And saw a rush of shivering resonate to his fingers. And then, inch by inch, Stopping only once or twice, He slid his body into the icy river.
When we walked back to the house he told me He had found his way. I said, It's a good way, too.
