I can't sleep.
I'm thinking too much about stuff right now. I made the mistake of watching most of MSNBC's "9/11: As It Happened" after Countdown tonight. My head hurts and I just want to stay up writing all night.

I suppose the positive thing is that if I do choose to do that, I have tomorrow off. That makes things a little more flexible, I suppose.

Ever have a night like I'm having, when you relive memories and images in your mind and all the emotions flood back and keep you awake? I don't like having nights like that...

3. I just might do it.
The only thing is that when I write in such a state, when I go back and read what I've written after I've calmed down, it never makes much sense. It makes sense when I write it, but when I read it later, it seems off. Maybe I'm just weird or something.

I'm certainly thinking of writing some truly awful poetry right now and seeing where that leads to.

2. try spending most of the past 11 months with a brother
who was dying from brain cancer, and died Sept 3rd, and then dealing with the aftermath, driving over 400 miles today, talking with judges and motor vehicle people and bank people..........

I can't sleep even after many drinks.

Oh well, that's life, I guess

4. I am truly sorry for your loss.
Life can be a truly miserable lot sometimes, fair or not.

6. thanks
at least life, while it's there, is something that's happening.

Life's not miserable! The alternative is!

7. hey
if it's really bad, get some help for your insomnia from the doc - I did and it did help. When my brother passed away one of my brothers took care of the estate (I was far away and distraught) and with my permission I told him, take more for yourself - you deserve it.

5. I have a question
you could or could not go to work but you don't have to select one ahead of time - you could just choose when you get up? That is AWESOME. How did such an arrangement get made?

8. No, that's not what I mean. Sorry for any confusion.
I have the day off from work tomorrow - i.e., I'm not on the schedule. Such is the wonder of working retail, I suppose. I think the choice I meant is that I either stay up all night writing, or I try to go to bed. That choice I haven't exactly made yet.

9. OK
still, I like that idea huh - I may take tomorrow off - maybe not. I like it! Wouldn't be too popular with the bosses though LOL. As far as working retail - like restaurant servers, I don't know how you folk do it. I treat y'all decently but the stuff I see.....well, I don't know how you do it without resorting to physical violence.

10. My experiences haven't been too bad.
Most of the worst stuff I got at my last job that eventually drove me to quit - I was a cashier at a hardware store - actually came from other supervisors/managers. Not that they treated me badly, but they often asked me to fill in for people who flaked out/were sick/didn't show, resulting in numerous, unscheduled 8-9 and even a couple of 11-12 hour days. It's not that the customers were bad, it's just that the job had so little variety. It was the same day in and day out.

My new job, were I'm cashier again, is better so far. I'm still learning the system, but there's a lot more variety in the things that go on at the register. Plus, I always have plenty of backup and I don't need to beg for assistance when there's a line.

Sometimes I'm not sure how I handle the customers either, but apparently I have excellent customer service skills and I always greet people with a warm hello and a friendly smile. I guess retail places like that stuff?

12. you sound very skilled
believe me, those kind of skills are appreciated and these days, getting rare. Also, you've hit on exactly what makes most people dissatisfied with a job - repetition. Smart managers know to rotate people to have them do different tasks to keep them on their toes. Yes INDEED. Honestly, you sound like manager material. You know what to do and what not to do!!!

14. Well, they DID make me a supervisor at the last job...
...but the only thing I really enjoyed was the end of the day, counting money and doing deposits and bank runs and all that stuff. It was very different from standing at the register alone for most of the day, asking the customers the same questions, having the same banter, saying the same things, going through the same motions. It got beyond boring, and it got to the point that if i had to stay a little late and continue doing it, the rest of the day was basically ruined.

I got to get out and work the floor every now and then - which is what I REALLY wanted to do - but I could probably count on two hands all the times I worked the floor in the 15 months I worked at the hardware store.

13. others have had the same problem
I'm so tired Lyrics
Artist(Band):The Beatles

I'm so tired, I haven't slept a wink
I'm so tired, my mind is on the blink
I wonder should I get up and fix myself a drink
No,no,no.

I'm so tired I don't know what to do
I'm so tired my mind is set on you
I wonder should I call you but I know what you would do

You'd say I'm putting you on
But it's no joke, it's doing me harm
You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain
You know it's three weeks, I'm going insane
You know I'd give you everything I've got
for a little peace of mind

I'm so tired, I'm feeling so upset
Although I'm so tired I'll have another cigarette
And curse Sir Walter Raleigh
He was such a stupid git.

You'd say I'm putting you on
But it's no joke, it's doing me harm
You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain
You know it's three weeks, I'm going insane
You know I'd give you everything I've got
for a little peace of mind
I'd give you everything I've got for a little peace of mind
I'd give you everything I've got for a little peace of mind
